KeymasterRe: Top viewers
Right then Martin, get you “Tony Blackburn” chops around this then….
We’ve just had our busiest month EVER! But not only that it turns out we’ve smashed every statistical record this month for UKW…
Busiest Month: November 2004 (203926 Hits)
Busiest Day: 3 November 2004 (16524 Hits)
Busiest Hour: 16:00 – 16:59 on November 25, 2004 (1839 Hits)And from the forums…
Most users ever online was 32 on Tue Nov 02, 2004 7:20 pm
Not bad for a little niche website with bugger all budget to promote itself with eh?
And as a little aside, we’ll likely hit 2 Million page views by Xmas or the New Year at the latest, accomplishing in 6 months what previously took 12.
I may even celebrate that one. 😉 😆
Thanks to all of you for your support and efforts.

KeymasterRe: DASA!
And three months or so on, what progress is there to report?
I read tonight that there is no online DASA members list. Therefore there is no self-promotion going on for DASA. In fact there is no promotion that I can see going on at all other than some tenuous ties with Lux, Whirlpool and AMDEA, all of whom have their own agendas. Some of it I have stumbled upon or worked out pretty much, have you? It really isn’t rocket science when you learn what’s going on.
The membership continues to fall, I expect that we’ll see more that fall by the wayside before too long.
We still have no clear aims or objectives to work towards.
Orbit may as well not have been bothered with from what I can see as there’s been no input.
In so far as I can see there has been no representation made or investigation of Part P or the new CORGI legislation. In fact there’s little if any reference to it on the DASA forums.
This mythical hotline to government, where is it, what is it?
Quite frankly if nothing happens with DASA in the very near future and it gets it act together and actually produces something you may as well call it a day IMO. And I know that many of the officers and council are busy, but they’re the very people that agreed to try to save DASA, the least they could do is honour that promise.
I take onboard Dave’s reasons for not rejoining DASA and, I have to say, that presently I cannot see any valid reason to be a part of DASA nor can I give anyone good cause to part with the money. So, once again, I ask the same questions and, yet again, I really don’t expect an answer to them because I cannot provide them either.
So, what happens now then?
I would have normally posted this in an open forum, either on DASA or here but I’ve refrained, again.

I think what Andy is reffering to is that there is no longer a downloadable members list or much of anything else for that matter. 😕

KeymasterRe: Eurolec DW004
Hi Nessy,
No it’s not acceptable at all. If you’re not going to make a call the least you can do is inform the customer as soon as is humanly possible, sadly that often isn’t until you actualy realise or are told that there is a problem. 😕
Eurolec service is dealt with by agents for Anglo Iberian Services mainly to my knowledge and you can get them on 01245-320992. If you call and ask if the call was logged through them they should be able to provide you with the number of your local repairer. If you get any real hassles ask to speak to Terry Ellis who should be able to resolve it for you, if they have the call of course.
Hope that helps a bit.

KeymasterRe: R U Ready
Actually Martin in some ways you’re quite right there, but I did actually take part in some interesting debates when these were first launched and TBH, they were pretty crap then. No doubt numerous updates and re-writes later I suppose they will, or should, be much improved.
However that does not detract from the fact that we can give a list of all the common fault codes that are out there as well as more up to date info and brand specific notes based on our collective massive experience. We can also bind the whole lot in one volume to become the Domestic Appliance Bible if you like, the equivelent of that medical book I can never remember the name of.
But we’re moving away from the main reasons for this which is to get people more educated in the industry as that is, after all, the primary goal here and not to have our names immortalised in print. It would be nice to happen and I guess it’s a possibility but not the goal.
Also we can hardly hand a numpty a copy of Dixon’s book and tell him to scurry off and read that and he’ll be a qualified engineer, I know you’re not suggesting that but it’s the way it’s coming across.
But building chapters on different brands and how they construct appliances is, IMO, the way to go if you want to go down the book path along with a “basics” thing. Far more sensible I feel.
But that’s for after we establish the work we do as the de facto standard.

KeymasterRe: UKW Meeting Sep 05
Great, I actually wanted to have this discussion.
I have always said that the funds from subscribers should be used to benefit subscribers, in whatever way they see fit. If you look back through all the posts on the subject I have maintained that line since we started it. Now, if you lot want the funds to pay for beer or pay for badges, signs, dockets or whatever else you want to do with it then I’m open to ideas, as I’m sure we all are.
There is an idea in paying for a meal alone. There’s an idea in paying for the likes of fridge magnets, although I have my own ideas there that won’t cost us a bean. 😈
Kev an I wouldn’t drink it all, that would be mean! :rotfl:
Currently and, for the foreseeable future, there isn’t enough money there to pay a salary for someone, I very much doubt there ever would be, nor was that the intent. My sentiment is that UKW should be funded on a day-to-day basis by other means which is entirely possible it’s just taking time to get it sorted out but bear with me. The guys like us that are just working Joes simply don’t have the financial ability to fund what I’ve done or intend to do, simple fact. Once you realise that then you also logically reach the conclusion that funding has to be obtained using other means.
It also follows that any services piled on top are either free gratis, which I make them wherever I possibly can, or you pay if you want the service. Much the same as going into a store and purchasing only what YOU need without, as is the traditional model for these sorts of things, trying to go at it with a “one cap fits all” type approach or scaling it on something that bears no relation to the profitability of the business, only the size of it.
So, the subscribers fund sits there and grows. What you want to use it for is up to you guys, not me. Just because I suggest something doesn’t mean it just arrived by email from God himself but hopefully it may make you think about it and decide or debate what you want to see done.
But please keep ratling the ideas out, it’s good to see the comments.

KeymasterActually there’s a fair old bit in either subject to explore. Whether it’s worth a book or not, especially in the case of cooking product, is open to debate sure, but refrigeration for engineers and not the masses is worthy.
The problem here is you’re looking at a book targetted to the public, we’re looking to engineers or potential engineers. If we could flog it to someone to publish in the public domain, or a watered down version thereof then so much the better but it’s not the reason for doing this.

KeymasterYeah Martin, no argument here. But notice that cooking and refrigeration products aren’t covered. 😉

KeymasterRe: Brandt Review
Well I am really pleased to report that Brandt called me today to tell me that they were sending up a load of tech info and training stuff. Result.
They are also trying to sort out the account with me as well, another result.
It’s so nice to be reporting good news for a change. 😀

KeymasterRe: UKW Meeting Sep 05
Martin wrote:It doesn’t take much to confuse an old codger like me, and again I’m confused 😳 I thought the whole idea of subscribing to UKW was to fund its future development, stick in bigger and better servers, create a slush funded legal framework, inject our hard earned stash into a ‘rainy day’ account for those that may need help in the future 😕
I have always said that the subscriber money is for the subscribers to be used as they see fit, not me.
In addition to what they pay any all revenues from Amazon and Google go in there as well. Amazon has donated about £300 IIRC and Google about $1400 less charges etc. By the time this happens there should be about that again, maybe more if we’re in luck. So in effect, we could afford to fund the beer money out of that if you like and still not be touching what you guys have paid in.
I always said it was about generating revenues from other sources haven’t I? 😉

KeymasterIf it’s a chargeable one and you’re picking up the tab if it goes wrong I’d be making a B-line for the hills! 😆
Seriously though, you’d be looking at the commutator switch as well as (probably) both display and control PCBs. Not cheap.
