KeymasterRe: Ariston AWD 12 – smelly!

Ah the murky grey pool known as consumer law, oh how we all love it. 😉
Seriously though, the conditions under which a product is not considered “fit for purpose” does not mean to say that said item will not suffer some sort of mechanical or electrical breakdown, machines break it’s only the “how long” that is in question. This is why warranties are offered by the manufacturer which more or less always state “to repair or replace at the discretion of XXXXX Ltd”, note there is no “we’ll refund all your cash”. As a general rule, barring some kind of catastrophe, the best you can hope for is an exchange product which would almost certainly be the same or equivelent of what you have now.
In effect to prove the “not fit for purpose” is a bit of a chore in all honesty and then you have to weigh up the cost/time/hassle factor of actually taking it to a court.
David Parker wrote:Anyway, as to the smell, I would be interested to know if anyone else has come across this. It’s definately not misuse – it’s done it from new.
Ah I was alluding to misuse as it is a common problem I’m afraid as people do have a strong tendancy to not read the instruction manual. Likewise many customers don’t read what to do with soap powder and fabric conditioner and that misuse can often lead to odour problems in general.
However it’s best to get it checked just in case there is a problem there, especially on the dry side and then take it from there.

Hi David,
Pretty much there’s nothing in the machine that can cause odour really although it could be fluff in the dryer chamber, it has been known but would be unusual. As a general rule odours are caused by external sources or the detergent products used by the customer, often misused I’m afraid.
As to a refund at 6 months you’ve virtually no chance I’m afraid, maybe a replacement after a long hard fight but it won’t be easy to come by.
The warranty conditions are pretty standard although Currys do offer the 28 day exchange policy, but that means it has to be out of commision for 28 days from when you report it faulty. No warranty as a general rule is all encompassing as many manufacturers will not pay for customer misuse, installations faults etc. but then if you drive your car into the garage wall the car manufacturer won’t pay for that either. 😉
Circumstance means it depends on who makes the call and their availability I should imagine, see other posts on Merloni of late. 😕
You can ask for a refund but I very much doubt you’ll get one without proof of a fault that cannot be rectified I’m afraid.

KeymasterIF the venue has a broadband link then it is very easy to setup an IP camera indeed as well as global net sharing using WLAN gear but it takes a bit of time to setup and make work. The IP range also has to be allowed to upload to the server, just another snag as we wouldn’t know that till connected. But it has been done in the past and certainly attendance by such a proxy means is all too possible where the connection is available but hotels in the UK seem not to have latched onto this at all. At Sibson I couldn’t even get decent GPRS cover let alone anything approaching what you’d need to technically do that.
But there again, a lot of it comes down to where we end up next time around.

KeymasterThe minutes of the meeting from Friday are now available for download from Downloads/UKW Meetings/Minutes, you’ll get the idea as I re-organised it so it made a lot more sense to find that stuff.
Sorry for the delay, they would have been there sooner had it not been for bleary eyes, sore heads and a busy Monday! 😆

KeymasterI think ours is pretty open-ended on that score but I better check it anyway.

KeymasterRe: Time out 4 Christmas
As I said at the meeting, I am seriously considering closing between Christmas and New Year this year as an experiment more than anything to see what the effect, if any, is.
On the whole the stock reply when you pick up the phone over the period is “I didn’t think anyone would be there…” which always amuses me as I can’t help but wonder why the customer bothered to call if they didn’t think anyone was there! 😆
A lot of spares departments shut down over the festive period to stock-take or whatever and I really can’t see that us attending Mrs Bloggs dishwasher or washer as a national emergency to anyone bar Mrs Bloggs.
Apart from that it gives the engineers a well earned break at that time of year and saves us organising more disruptive holidays later, plus if the engineers have kids it’s always a fight for who gets Christmas week off.
All in all there’s a lot of advantages in closing down with very little downside IMO.

KeymasterOkay, so DASA down to one forum and maybe a bit of a cull on the rest. The international ones I think we should leave but I’ll have a think on it this week as time allows.
I’m a tad busy ATM. 😕

KeymasterRe: Diplomat ADP 8132 – anyone want mine?
Training of engineers is a bit of an industry sore spot as not many manufacturers offer much, if any and it is something that we are actively involved in trying to address. Some manufacturers and retailers, like MFI and DSG funnily enough, recognise the need for this especially with today’s more complex and electronically driven appliances and they are trying to work with us on solving the traditional issues of training. It is true that many engineers out there are insufficiently trained on many appliances with manufacturers launching products before even telling the service agents that they exist let alone how to diagnose a fault on one. It is sad but true that training is very expensive and with the low cost of appliances these days training has been one of the things that appear to have been cut back on.
We try here, on UK Whitegoods, to not only help the public but also the trade as many independents out there have no access to any training of any kind. Any courses ran in places like colleges would be of little or no use as by the time they were drawn up they would be almost out of date as the products change so quickly.
It is a problem, we are trying to address it.
We offer information freely to both the trade (in the trade forums obviously) and the public forums in an attempt to prove that we as a trade do care and we do do as much as we can to help people. After all, that’s our job.

KeymasterEJ,
Merloni did not manufacture that appliance, an ADP8132 which is a dishwasher in fact, it is a Smeg produced appliance.
Most of the washers sold by MFI are Merloni though and whilst timers in them do occasionally fail in my experience, it is rare and not a common problem at all. To put that in perspective out of 100 service calls I would anticipate maybe two timers at most from my experience.
It is also my experience that MFI are a very “customer focussed” company and they do not like to leave customers with unresolved issues, I am sure that other repairers here would echo that as well.
Can you offer some more details and clarify the actual appliance that is at fault?
