    Re: 0800 Repair

I guess when they have multi recalls and the brown hits the fan, they sell the company to someone like connect.

Braun in F1 just did the same, as soon as a company becomes noticed the big boys take them over.

Then the previous owners become rich.

Maybe its a sign of the times or maybe I`m becoming a grumpy old man.

But a job is meant to be a two way relationship, not all there way.

    Never give a time.

I only book AM or PM.

Usually the ones wanting an exact time are hassle.

    Re: Subcontracting-whats a fair price?

If your in profit and have no other work, then its fine.

Most contractors work from £20-40.00 per completed call, get £20 on all calls is a far deal.

I`m sure others here will tell you they won`t work for less than £60 a call, but if they don`t someone else will.

In a perfect world we`d all get together and demand that kinda money, problem is the industry has a huge skills gap and manufactures are well away that not all engineers are worth paying a lot for.

    Got answered.

    This is much more important.

As for Trading Standards, there only purpose in life is too equip the public with more misunderstanding of the Sales of Goods act.

I`m sure they read from a script, you could ring trading standards all day long with various scenarios and there response would be the same. :rolls:

Fit for its purpose, yeap a broken washing is definitely not fit for purpose

    Re: Worst Week Ever

I think a lot of people are making do for the time being.

I went to a fridge that was bust and they asked about the tumble dryer which had a broken handle, they asked I gave a price and they declined as there ok using the knife to open it.

Also had a call cancel today, they rang on Thursday stating there oven isn`t heating, they cancelled today saying “they tried it over the weekend and now its working, I wish we`d tried early as we`ve been months without it”

I believe getting close to xmas may pick up a bit.

Had phone call from the Kenwood client.

I try to explain that she needed to get back to me on Friday and I`d have to re order etc etc.

    Re: meggers

Its true about the rest of the world.

All my yrs working for BSH in Spain not one Engineer I asked knew anything about safety testing, meggers, nothing.

I shadowed various engineers and not one carried even a multi meter.

I even did gas calls to Gas leaking installations with guys who didn`t have any knowledge of Gas.

Which explains why there is so many gas explosions.

Yet in the UK we (Company Engineers) follow EU legislation.

Its true though very few incidents occur compared to the majority of repairs.

HSE has not reduced the work place incident rate since it was introduced.

People make mistakes and its just a simple fact of life, it cannot be stopped.

I do the full range of checks because it makes me as a company look good and customers tend to come back for more when there happy with your work.

    Re: wasted callouts

HAd the Kenwood call replace fan element, customer states the cooling fan noisy now not working.

So I strip it out, Gas rail in way, etc. fan out of mounts, so reinstall everything and try it, all working, gave client the bill, she pays plus the extra £10 for sorting the fan, hands the money and

Yep the fan starts grinding and noisy.

So I disconnect and tell her I`ll get a price to replace fan and won`t charge fitting.

Now I price the fan, I get it from connect for £30.00, it retails on all the sites for £70.00.

So I ring her quoted £75.00 for fan no fitting charge. Her reply, I can get it from the Internet for less are you charging fitting.

No I`m not, how much can you get it.

    £68.95 from partmaster.

Ok you buy it and I`ll charge you my callout to come and fit it.

    I`ll ring you back.

So far haven`t heard a thing.

I`m sure now I`m the big bad over priced demon. 😥

I understand the crisis, but I`m not working for free so others can save.

    Its easy.

Lean it on its back, bottom base plate unscrews exposing all components.

    Re: meggers

I agree it should be made law beyond the Work place regulations.

Having said that I thought the Safety at work regs covered the domestic engineer working in a clients property because as soon as an engineer opens his tools or begins work that clients home then becomes a place of work ans then alters the regulations to take that into account.

I`m no lawyer and have always choosen to cover my own rear, which is way my test equipment including the megger retail for more than a grand to purchase.

I`m sure I could get away without it, but I like the fact I`m a pro. 😉

I`ll try to put this polite, I`m not trying to put you down, but if you need to ask such questions maybe you should take a course at your local tech college.

Not knowing how or what functions a megger can provide tends to indicate that you lack a basic level of Electrical capability.

    Re: meggers

Ops yes it was Dec 08.

An engineer in a ServiceForce depot was killed repairing a microwave around the 2000 time.

Around that time I remember a DIY guy killed replacing the belt on his Hotpoint W/m.

I often failed appliances for Earth faults, even when changing door seals.

Management are fully aware it happens, as the paper work always has the same results written on them.

The companies are not liable as they ensure every step is taken to ensure their Engineers comply, if that then results in a death or serious injury, there covered and the Engineer will be the one paying the fine and serving the time.

Deaths and injuries do occur, people do get prosecuted, it just does not make national headlines.

In Wales there is a guy who didn`t clean the boiler he serviced, it spilled products of combustion into the premises, it killed the occupants.

He was sentenced last month I believe.

    It does happen.

I guess he must be management, the 0800 guys are either still stuck on there 1 st call in the PM or too skint to pay for internet. 😆

    Silence speaks volumes.
