Would a course have helped me?
No.
Its not designed to help you grow up, it wont teach you business skills, commonsense or manners
The entry level required to pass is higher than pre school.
I doubt any course would help you, l very much doubt you could achieve the qualification.;-)

That’s been annoying me. Mostly because I don’t want what I do to be misunderstood.
Mee too. You’ve spent time trying to set up a national qualification. Thought you would have been on the same page as me.
Am I hard on agents/engineers/repairers, maybe. All I want is them to do a good job for customers and clients. I want them to use their brains.
People will always need managing.
Would a qualification help any of the guys in that regard?
No.
On its own obviously not, the whole point of the qualification is too weed out the people who cannot grasp theory, such as ohmns law, not that we use it oftern, but way to many people l meet cannot assimilate for example the relationship between wattage and resistance. You cannot turn up to a client and assume just because you had that fault last week that that part will fit it this time, many do.
I also have to be discreet on details on here because l may well be giving examples of cock ups of people who are members here, such as a system eng with decades of experience who could not tell a system fault by looking at the ice pattern on a basic evap and fitted not only a thermostat, door seal, over charged the system, several visits later realised the stat was wrong anyway.
He had no qualifications, only experience, a long CV of companies, each with several yrs. He left companies before they got around to realising he was as thick as s88t.
Obviously your not going to learn much in a classroom, my mistake in my writting was to assumed readers would not be so naive and miss my point, seems some did and went aggressive.
So, how do you judge competence in the absence of that being a reasonable guide then?
By having a mentor in place monitoring the work, his assessment adds to the final marks before a pass can be given.
I know what agents we use and, many others use, can be trusted and I’m not shy in telling about the good ones and the bad ones. And, this may come a surprise but, many of the bad ones are from, shall we say, larger service companies that have multiple engineers that think that bullsh1tting their way through is okay. Some of them even have certificates from what is, in effect, the Samsung training camp (aka Samsung propaganda brainwashing school) in Birmingham. Even from there, some of them couldn’t find their butt with both hands in the dark using a Maglight.
And you believe your the only one that is aware of that fact.
I’ve known engineers come from one brand to another, one lasted 3 months before he quit. There loss is another ones gain 😆
Again there is no short term easy fix, however there is a plan, in pilot form that as l stated at the beginning may or may not work.
The difference is, I go at it from the perspective of how I was taught to diagnose problems, deal with customers and so on. I have no requirement to beat people about the head with a (IMO) totally idiotic argument that they aren’t good enough because they don’t have the correct paperwork. Bear in mind that, repairers and paperwork don’t mix well, in many ways.
Its a start that at least is designed to weed out the rubbish before it develops, most people tend to develop a lazy attitude because either they get away with it, everyone else is doing it or there fed up with the employers attitude.
You cannot build a house with only bricks, you need the rest to come together as a team. Some independents do manage it, but less face it independents are micro managed, its easier until now for di88s to hide within large companies with much larger work loads, especially when they dont return to the call and rely on friends to covef there arse.
For a large company there is currently a major issue finding a work force capable and proven to work well, there are few options, add together future planned developments, it has to change and im sure will.
Too much money is being wasted, the current situation does not work and the evidence is plain to see.

I can confirm the sales rep for Vulken calls monthly to Knowhow sites and all there system guys carry brand new gear from January last yr and new tech also recieve new equipment.
Any system eng is aware not all blockages are resolved and since KnowHow carry out several hundred calls daily a few will fail and im sure an independent could remove a unit to a workshop and spend several hours on it. Large repairers dont waste time on something not economically viable to the business, not always a relection of ability.
Many fixed price repairs are booked due to independents unable to fix or unwilling to attempt.

Just curious, what are your qualification Lee?
I’m afraid it is not relavent to this thread what qualifications l hold, & in light of off topic comments & people assume i’m full of crap anyway.
I will tell you though technically l am not a fully qualified white goods engineer.

Call me stupied, but my original post clearly stated that there is a current qualification for our industry via City & Guilds and that there is a batch of trainees currently doing it whilst working alongside experienced engineers.
The plan is not for this week, next yr, but a long term solution to a current skill shortage and an even worse situation in the future.
Its been disscussed, reviewed, assessed and solution is pending.
Im an engineer by qualification, experience and my role is engineering, l dont instruct people on how to run there business, lm given a no of product returns to test, client recalls to visit and assess and collate.
No illuminati, no major issue, no glory, just thick skin.
So in a decades time you may well look back at this and think this.
My business really suffered until around 2018, l started getting CV’s from people who have both a qualification relevent to our industry and on the job training, they walked into our business, needing little monitoring, our recall rate dropped, my spares costs dropped and infact even the quality of the products increased. We made a difference.
Or you could.
Site back do nothing as you’ve seen it all before and it just won’t work. The experienced staff are old and unable to cope with new tech. No reliable staff are willing to work because the pay is rubbish because im struggling with recalls l dont get paid for and the WP have learnt the fiddles that used to improve 1st fix rate. New staff have nothing in their CV to prove there quality of work or ability.
I no which i prefer.;-)
