While your potential 120{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} profit may be appealing garn, the thought of an outraged punter launching a fire damaged appliance through my dining room window would make me very nervous to be honest.
A happy punter & a good nights sleep are worth more to me than a bulging wallet.. but i like a quiet life.. best of luck anyway 😉

I used to think think the Indesits we had to work on during the ’90s were a bit built to a price, god, little did we know what was in store come the millennium. Not bad wee machines in hindsight.
In all honesty though, having been to see a Zanussi on Thursday, a ZWF 1427, 19 months old.. TOTALLY BER, im beginning to wonder if a name means anything any more. Armature was seriously down to earth, module had blown in 2 places & the welded drum bearings had signs of free play. So £350 down the pan for my customer( plus my callout)
Electrolux loses another customer..

I did hear the van driver was the cause of that shocking smash Phidom, assumed he was texting or something, he of course survived, as is often the way.

ParticipantRe: QER Electronics
It would be nice to have a reliable supply of re-con dish modules as EMW dont do many. TBH, i stopped using QER many years ago due to just about everything i tried to order not being held in stock.
This not only meant an extra visit to a customer, but also, i always think it looks a bit suspect having to take a part away, you can practically hear them thinking “bet he’s really taking that to his garden shed to bodge a repair on it” that of course, only happens occasionally 😉
Anyway’ DO let us know how you get on! 😉 😆

Yep, its been a slow year, no mistake. Its the one thing i hate about self employment, never knowing on a Monday if youre gonna make a grand or a tenner by friday.
I was very lucky to have a few years in offshore oil some time ago & managed to pay off the house, i would SERIOUSLY struggle to find that sort of spare cash now & what hair i have left would certainly say ta ta.
But hey, we’re in a low spot in the economic cycle, simple as that. There will be a recovery sooner or later.. wont there..?? 😯 😯

I guess we all come across an appliance which has us stumped now & again. Personally i would never fob a customer off with “oh its the pcb, its BER” or whatever just to get the callout.
That kind of dishonesty will usually come back to bite your bum, in fact there was a fella round these parts taken to court a number of years ago for diagnosing BER on on a rather expensive commercial dryer & pocketing a £50 callout.. he went belly up about a year later.
Nah, treat others as you would wish to be treated, i always found that key to surviving in business (and life in general)

I call it a ‘weed out the wasters & wa*nkers’ charge, as i find it useful in that regard.. they wouldnt let me put that in my yellow pages ad though..shame 😯

ParticipantRe: How to beat the recession
Yeah, its been a feast & famine year round these parts too, think we may all be looking at a lean period for a few months yet.
Sounds like you have what works for your area sussed & at the end of the day, thats what we all must do to make a crust.A large urban area will always have more competition than the scattered rural community i roam around, & with Diesel at current rate i simply have to charge for turning up, indeed, people would think it strange if i didnt!
Its not an easy game these days though, wherever you are, no wonder we’re an endangered species! 😯

Having said that, that Merloni customer should have been told the importance of keeping the engineer well lubricated.
Ohh err! so thats what goes on in Burnley!!

I didnt mean to imply youre a muppet simonb 😉 but i do believe you are selling yourself short by offering your time for free.
But hey, its your business & you have to operate in your area in a way which generates calls i guess. What i would say, is i used to offer the very same thing, did it for years, but i can honestly say since starting to charge a modest fixed callout my workload didnt suffer at all. The only thing that dropped was my stress levels, no more spending half an hour finding a house, diagnosing a fault, only to be told “I’ll think about it” :rolls:

Quite right Washdoc, being busy does not mean youre making money. I would much prefer 5 fair minded customers a day who realise you must charge a fair rate for your service, than 10 timewasters.
I know its tough when there are loads of muppets in an area with no callout, but i firmly believe most sensible people see straight through that age old hook & wonder what the catch is :rolls:

ParticipantRe: save fuel !!!
Hho generator? Ha ha more like! The high cost of fuel means theres loads of these snake oil scams coming out of the woodwork..
Boring fact is you need much more energy to separate hydrogen from oxygen than is ever recovered by by burning it.. bloody explosive stuff too.. 😯

Laughed out loud when i read that ! Had exactly the same thing happen with a right nosey old bird in her 70s ! Think she actually buggered off and did her knitting or whatever after the head butt.. Hellish when you have to resort to violence to get rid of them!! 😉
