😆 ‘Twas monumentally stupid ! I still truly thank my lucky stars every time I look at the faint scar on my index finger. I think the only ‘sensible’ thing I did that day was to turn my head before each tap of the primer. I could have been totally blinded with great ease, and I’m not sure that would have been a life I would have wished to live 🙁

That drum pulley injury looks even worse than mine, yuk. I remember a few years ago a guy called me out to his Hotpoint WM52 with no drum movement. I noticed his right hand was heavily bandaged and he sheepishly admitted that a few days previously, having gleaned some info from google :rolls: he took the lid off the machine, put it on spin and twirled the drum pulley with his right hand while tapping the motor with a pair of pliers . Nice.
The brushes made enough contact and his hand was pulled into the gap between the pulley and drum. Required stitches to at least 3 fingers if I remember rightly and was probably going to have permanent nerve damage in them.

I had to take a full week off after my injury so definitely wish I had passed on that particular job! Unfortunately the customer is still expecting me back to finish the work as he wants to make sure I get paid for my trouble ! At least he had the decency to phone to see how I was I guess 🙂

The latest incident had me thinking back to the first ‘flesh peeling’ hand injury I can recall when I was 12 or 13. Parents away for the day, I found a couple of rounds for dad’s ancient Lee-Enfield rifle ( he had a licence ! ) The gun was locked up thank goodness but I still thought it a fine idea to mount this sizable .303 cartridge in a vice in the garage figuring once activated, it would shoot through the open doors and hit a target I had positioned in the field behind our house ( it was a very rural setting thank god !)

So after clamping a round in the vice and gathering up a nail and a small hammer I proceeded to tap the primer gently, and with confidence building, managed to set the thing off on the third or forth strike.
It did not end well :eeek:

My ears rung for about 3 days and I was seriously lucky the deep jaws of the big old vice I used must have directed most of the blast towards the floor and roof. A chunk of brass came back towards my hands though and peeled a strip from my left index finger.
I remember dropping to the floor and going into a bit of shock, not able to move for half an hour watching blood drip through the hand I had clamped around my finger.

Firearms have big thick barrels for a good reason was the lesson learned that day 😆

Didn’t share that one with my parents untill I was in my mid 20’s !

as you get into the front hall that familiar smell of mingers hits you
not sure what how to describe the smell but its the same wherever you go – stale mouldy nappies bucket full of food smell

you fight your way past all the excreta they bring inside for safe keepings – get into kitchen eventually focus on the washing machine as their no lights .. there its is bush — you turn to customer and say i thought you said it was a –ah never mind

keeping your best professional face on – you make a hasty retreat to the comfort of you van whilst telling the customer im going to check a price for that –eh eh motor and pcb

get in the van lock the doors – drive around the corner incase they come out to ask you something you have all types of anti bacteria wipes and gel — every thing gets a wipe down – phone car keys pen – job sheets gets thrown on the floor

Aye, we’ve all been there with the minger Bush brigade Ally. I often start planning my escape within 30 seconds of entering that type of house, there’s simply no way I’m going to kneel on the floor or touch any surface. Usually don’t even attempt to ask for a callout fee either, as you’re typically met with a blank stare.

Annoying waste of time to be sure, but the sense of relief just to be back in the fresh air is reward enough to be honest 😆

And the customers still can’t grasp why we charge more to attend an integrated appliance 🙁
Had an integrated double oven a few weeks ago that needed to be removed for an element swap. Cable was cut so short it would only move forward a few inches from the cabinet, had to rewire the bloody thing to complete the job. Kitchen fitters indeed. :bang:

    Re: Samsung screws grrrr.

I’ve noticed this problem too, specifically on Korean machines it must be said. I generally only carry a PH size 2 to tackle all cross head fixings but some of these screws have a tiny head as well as being overly tight, maybe a PH 1 would fit some of them ?
Seems needless though, unless its a deliberate ploy to make them harder to repair.

    Re: Bosch WAK28160 reset procedure

Sorry for late reply on this one but the customer went off on holiday. They came back to find a message left by me telling them to try the last procedure from nomadPaul and it worked fine. 🙂 Couldn’t have been more timely for them with their bags full of skanky holiday clothes so they were most grateful !

Thanks to all who responded 🙂

Thanks for the reply. Yep, tried all that Martin, motor unplugged, door open, doing a handstand 😕

Must have tried around 20 times to reset the bloody thing. Customer even tried calling the BSH ‘helpline’ number to see if a tech guy would at least speak to me but they were not interested in divulging any info.

Had to leave it like that. Think they’re going to find out if they bought it from John Lewis as they suspect they did, might be under their 5 year guarantee . Bloody embarrassing !

yep, checked all the basic stuff. It’s a fault I’ve seen before on these boards and usually just get one from EMW but that means a £60 bill in parts alone for my elderly customer.
Trying to keep the cost down for her.

    Thanks for the reply 🙂

Re: Thoughts on what leave will mean to us?

A look at the plummeting value of the Turkish Lira against sterling over the last few years partly explains why Beko has become a major brand in this country, despite the fires.
Price is the deciding factor for most buyers, no doubt about it.

A £20 to £30 increase on the average cost of a washing machine would certainly help our industry a bit at least. I’m finding the public’s willingness to chuck 2 or 3 year old machines is the worst it’s ever been, loads of people seem to call for a price and maybe book a visit only to change their mind an hour later.
Absolutely infuriating waste of time but what can you do ? 😕

Yuk. hope you scrubbed your hands ! Surprising amount of people dont believe it when you present a basin’s worth of pump / sump hose findings beneath their snouts.
‘Well that’s not mine, I dont keep coins or XYZ in my pockets !’

Truly bizarre, they must think we keep handfuls of skanky coins and used johnnys on hand just to make a job out of it 😕

He says he spent a lot of his working life in engineering so I’m guessing he’s retired, seeing out his twilight years in the shadow of Oxford’s dreaming spires ?
At least he’s totally polite with good grammar, unlike the majority of the gimme free advice brigade.

And all you lot can do is take the pi$$,poor old guy, shame on you. 😕

    😆
