ParticipantRe: At what point does one walk out on a job…..
Had one today where the punter had attempted to replace the on/off switch on a Beko dryer.
Adamant he had carefully noted the position of each of the four wires on his note pad so was confused by the bang he was rewarded with upon switching it on And the subsequent bangs as he used up his pack of 13 Amps before he called me in. ( why do they expect the next fuse to be different to the last one tried ?)Live to neutral dead short in new switch of course, but at least he had a good sense of humour about it.
I think faced with the OP’s situation I would have bailed though, there’s only so much DIY tinkering I can stand to undo . π‘

ParticipantRe: No More Gas Cooker Repairs!
Its a pity that government over the last few decades hadn’t got serious about insulation standards for new builds in the way most Scandinavian countries have.
300mm wall cavities stuffed with plain old glass wool batts, 500mm of the same in roll form in the attic and 200mm of polystyrene before the floor slab is poured would have given near passivhaus levels of insulation at very little extra cost, with commonly available materials.Still have to rely on the good old British tradesman to actually do a proper job when installing the stuff though, which is never a given, if the job the muppets who did my loft insulation is anything to go by.
Has to make sense to try to reduce demand before you start banning stuff :rolls:

You can get electric combi boilers right now, not much if any more cost than a gas one. Expect more as landlord, that don’t want the high cost of maintaining gas ones, switch to that.
So, no loss there then.
K.
Not sure about the rest of the country but gas is still around half the Kwh cost of off peak leccy in these parts.
And quite how will the nat grid with a few percent of spare capacity in winter deal with all those electric boilers firing up and pulling 10 Kw or whatever extra per household ?Utter bollox if you ask me, gas is still (relatively) the cleanest way of providing space heating and hot water at a vaguely affordable cost for the average family.

Would be better impressed if Herr Miele made some spares for his products more affordable. That would show a more believable commitment to a ‘fix it, dont bin it’ philosophy IMO π―

Yep, not easy getting cash out of some of them Bryan π
Could you PM me a price ?
Strange that it was working fine with normal temps before she decided to switch it off ? Only have her word for that of course.

ParticipantRe: You know you’re getting old when…..
I’m kinda proud to announce to customers that I’ve been in the game self employed for over a quarter of a century, although it does make me feel old every time I say it !
You must be doing something right if you survive that long is the way I see it and I feel sorry for friends who’ve had the stress of changing careers / moving home many times in the same period.

ParticipantRe: rubbish non genuine dryer capacitors
Slow running motors can also stem from cap probs. Did an old Hoover dishwasher last week where the original cap was causing the wash motor to pump at half its usual output.

ParticipantRe: EBAC washing machines launch in the spring
Split drums were evident in a pic from inside the factory but will they stick with them if the accountants think a welded one will save a fiver per unit in the future ?
I will certainly recommend them if they are fixable and parts prices make the maintenance of them viable.
Seriously thinking of buying one when they’re available as our machine is past its best.

ParticipantRe: Masterpart….or Amazon?
Up here I get hit with such a high postage charge from the trade outfits I rarely bother to even look for single items.
If you’re ordering a quantity of quick moving spares the numbers can sometimes work from trade suppliers.
The nature of the work coming in these days however tends towards needing to order an unpredictable mishmash of single items required ASAP over the course of the month.
Fleabay and Amazon are hard to beat in this regard I’m afraid. πMadmac

Do yell still have ‘sales executives’ :rolls: floating around annoying people ?I haven’t been visited in years, just pestered over the phone.
This is a very rural area though.Madmac

kwatt wrote:Can I ask, why do you think hot fill is better…
K.
Not claiming it’s always better. Our machine lives almost directly below the combi in the utility room so the water has less than a metre of copper to travel through.
As the pipework is within the ‘thermal envelope’ of the house, even that wouldn’t be wasted heat in the heating season. An inefficient old clunker of a boiler sparking up to send hot water 30 feet via un-insulated pipes running under a suspended wooden floor…not so much.
Definitely depends on your individual circumstances though, it must be said.

Ads starting to pop up on social media now I see. Their range isn’t quite what I was hoping for though, 6 to 9 kilo, 1200 to 1600 spin, all in white.
At least there’s a hot and cold fill option as they promised, better that your gas combi heats the water at a third of the cost IMO.
Cant actually buy a machine as yet though π―

ParticipantRe: non genuine Hotpoint dryer shaft kit – rubbish
Oh, and do avoid like the plague the cheap copy mag pumps Europart are selling.
Noisy as hell if they work and the impellers have a habit of falling off within a few months.
Buying gen and taking the hit on the couple of quid it costs is definitely more cost effective on certain parts π

Regarding the jockey wheels, I always take time to pop the circlip off and coat the shaft with a moly grease.
Even the copy items seem to last ok when this is done.
