Re: Bearings and seal info needed

Thanks for the reply Bazza. Customer asked me to open it up anyway to see if I could ‘patch it up’ as she’ll leave it when she moves abroad later in year, she had no warranty left on it.

Actually managed to have the inner drum sitting on the floor within a half hour as you can leave the rear half of the outer tub in situ.

6207 and 6305 bearings I had to hand but weird seal I did not.
Very corroded spider arms but the seal bush was clean.

She agreed to a ‘no guarantees’ bodge so I put a smaller spring on the existing seal, which did make it grip the shaft ok 🙂 ,cleaned everything up, coated with grease, popped new bearings in and threw it back together 8)

The whole thing took less than 2 hours including a cuppa, but there’s certainly a lot of stuff to move out of the way.

Would much rather have done it properly if a bearing and spider kit was available but I certainly couldn’t find anyone selling one and drums are silly money for these machines.

Anyway, was sounding good as new when I left 🙂

    Re: Desk Lamp Diversification

Regarding room heaters, it really should be illegal to claim any resistive element based heater is more efficient than a bog standard 2 bar fire for example, because it simply cannot be.

I saw a ‘German engineered clay core’ storage heater being flogged on one of those shopping channels for hundreds of pounds earlier in the year, much cheapness of running costs guaranteed compared with your old nasty night storage heaters :rolls:

Marketing bollox of course but people will no doubt fall for it.

If Dyson can get nearly £200 for their ‘air multiplier’ desk fan and £300 for a room heater then why not :rolls:

The style over function market is a lucrative one indeed 😉

Have one at the moment myself. Went to look at a Hotpoint W/D that was throwing the breaker, disconnected dryer element so she could use it as I didn’t have the part to hand.

Stupidly, didn’t charge for the call and now I can’t raise her no matter what, all calls going to voice mail.

Not nice being used for free diagnostics, when will I learn? 👿

That’s the pitfall these days with the ‘right to cancel’ bollox we’re all supposed to adhere to, but how many of us actually do it ?
    I know I dont ! 😯

I’ve always used an estate with a magnetic sign slapped on the side.
Have a decent trailer if I have to move anything bulky, don’t really like the boomy noise and restricted visibility of a van to be honest, and don’t want to run 2 vehicles.

Current ride is a 58 plate Focus 1.6 TDCI Zetec I bought at 2 years old.
Still on original turbo and DPF at 115k even though these engines apparently eat them if media reports are to be believed.
It gets fresh synthetic oil and a filter once a year and never needs topped up between changes.

Air con, power windows and a decent radio is all I need to keep me happy.
Excellent ride and handling and 50mpg without trying are definite bonuses though. I’ll probably run it into the ground as it does all I need it to really and any trade in value is rapidly fading 😯

It was interesting at the last meeting when there was the opportunity presented to repair domestic heat pump heating systems, worth thousands of pounds, in some cases tens of thousands.
These type of heating systems are set to become more popular as, on that scale, heat pump works and is economically viable.

    K.

The council are putting ASHP into quite a few houses around here, aint massively popular with many tenants though I hear.
Complaints of intrusive noise and higher than expected leccy bills commonplace 🙁

Interesting system though, and in theory if you can expect a COP of over 3 on average and run it on under 10p kWh electricity it might just work out slightly cheaper than gas CH.

Hmmm… well if that’s typical real world consumption they’re barely worth the effort then.

Yeah, running consumption around 1Kw seems typical for them but if it’s on for twice the time then I dont see how they’re gonna be more economical 😕
As ken says, you’ve also got to take into account the energy used in manufacturing the compressor, gas, etc.

There’s so much greenwash bullsh*t around these days you dont know what to believe :rolls:

Have you got a plug-in energy monitor you can run it through? Would be interesting to see real world leccy consumption compared to a conventional dryer.

The general manufacturers hype suggests half the consumption of a ‘standard’ dryer but a large pinch of salt might be needed with that figure. :rolls:

I find that as well. 🙁 Now it’s possible some of the screwdrivers, spanners, torches etc I’ve lost over the years are inside machines, under kitchen units and what have you, but they can’t all be.

In the quarter of a century I’ve been at this game, I can think of only two occasions when I’ve had a call to say I’ve left something behind.

People love ‘free’ stuff I’m afraid 👿

Cheers for the reply, I’ll have a look at the triac and see if I can crack it before I price a board.

Always try to use a 6 rib and make sure it is warmed up if it’s been sitting in a cold van (always notice they stretch easier in the summer)
I use an old snapped belt to pull the new one up and over the plastic pulley. Tis a bit of a fiddle though. 🙁
