ParticipantRe: NO CALL OUT CHARGE… (So how exactly does that work???)
Your last sentence is exactly how i look at it gazman. When i first started i had a no callout wheeze in order to build up a customer base, but looking back, i wish i hadnt done that, the timewasters were epic.
I have a set fee which i stick to,( though its higher for integrated) and reasonable people have no questions about it .
No callout = no chance of surviving in business in these expensive times IMHO.

ParticipantRe: Fuel Prices
What amused me this week is the hints from Darling that he MAY put off the proposed 2p rise in duty till next year.. while during the week the pump price went up abput twice that! :rolls:

ParticipantRe: Fuel Prices
Some interesting points martin. As a sole trader i have thus far resisted the temptation to raise my callout to cover the 30 odd {e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} rise in Diesel recently.
Its not that i wouldnt like to, rather, as you pointed out, i feel it might rock a somewhat wobbly boat. There is some aggressive price cutting going on in the sheds & supermarkets at the mo, and i feel we all have to deal with this by offering a vaiable cost repair.
If im honest, my weekly diesel bill has risen around £10 over the last year, so its not a huge issue, and as you say, its suprising how you can trim 30 or 40 miles off your weekly amount by better planning. I have reduced my week miles from well over 300 to around 270 simply through better planning.
So yes, we’re all gonna have to start seeing oil as the finite, precious stuff it is & adapt accordingly, we dont like change, but change we must 😯

ParticipantRe: Ever date a customer?
We can never say where we will meet someone special.. Many years ago i ended up dating a customer for a year, nice lass too.
Was i must say annoyed by the sniggering from some of my pals when they found out how we met, one commented that it was like the plot from a 70’s porno ! repair man calls, gets more than he bargained for, etc,etc..
Wasnt like that at all, but hey, if it amused my mates, thats just fine 😉
Funny how meeting someone in a crummy pub pissed out of ones face is considered acceptable, ( personally never met anyone worthwhile that way ) but if you meet someone in their house & at least have a chance to get to know them a little, you get a p*ss take.. funny old game.. :rolls:

ParticipantRe: What Price A New Washing Machine In 5 Years Time!
Prices will probably start to rise in the coming years, raw material costs simply will have to be passed on eventually. Trouble is, by then i think it may be too expensive to drive to a job more than a few miles away ! we cant win, can we :rolls:

ParticipantRe: Fuel Prices
The rules have been relaxed on personal use of veg oil as road transport fuel. Cant remember amount but seem to rememer thinking it would take my wee van around 25000 miles.
The price of fuel is getting beyond a joke though, the government will never u turn on the tax take on fuel, a fall in the dollar price of crude is the only thing that will reverse this worrying trend.

Wow phidom, a genuine bunny boiler methinks.. 😯 I would be thinking along the lines of police intervention if it continues.
I guess most of us who have been in the trade a long time have had one or two “offers”, we do deal with women mostly i guess, some of whom are a wee bit frisky 😉
I think my most memorable one was an old bird (seventy at least) who called me to look at her washer & proceeded to tell me how lonely she felt since her divorce 5 years ago, how she missed a man in her bed, etc, etc.
Getting no response from me, she then came over to the machine (hpt 95) & pretended to express an interest in the brush change i was doing.
This allowed her to rub her breast against my arm (i kid you not ! :eeek: )I completed the quickest brush change in my career that day i think ! I mean, i may have been flattered had she been 30 or 40 years younger, but the cute ones are never bloody interested !! :rolls:

ParticipantRe: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?
It is amazing the faith people have in their appliances.. machines entombed by inch thick flooring, boilers, rads, etc, etc.. such dissapointment on their little faces when you explain that a joiner, plumber, or a heating engineer will have to clear the decks first.. twits. :rolls:

ParticipantRe: The Geek Squad
Thats the problem isnt it Wilf. The public had access to thousands of independent retailers from lands end to John o groats in years gone by.
All i hear from people around here is how they feel constantly let down by the sheds & supermarkets, how its such a shame that there is no indy appliance outfits left in the area, blah, blah..
Well, you have to use it or lose it, dont you :rolls:
