    Re: Measuring Capacitance

well at least I provoked a bit of lively debate, which was one of my intentions. The mathematical formula I use is Capacitance in mfd is equal to 1,000,000 xI all over2x Pi x fxV where Pi is 3.142 ,f is the frequency[50 hertz] and v is the voltage {220]. For 220 volts this reduces to C= 14.4 x I where I is th current in amps. Iguess I was bored that day.

    Re: Measuring Capacitance

Eastlmark asks why bother. Just curiosity I guess. I still find it interesting to be able to actually measure the capacitance with just an amp meter and a pen and paper. Having read Barons posts before I get the impression he is a very well educated man. However I am not sure I fully understand his reply. It is true that I am measuring the short circuit current of the cap as oposed to the current It would carry in the motor circuit. But I am doing this jut as a way to calculate its capacitance.Baron, are you also saying that short circuiting a charged cao will damage it?

Re: Another Death Nail For Our Pasta Eating Friends ?

I have no doubt that you have all noticed that governments seem to think that it is more important to be seen to do something than to actually acheive something. WEEE is a classical example of this. My pet hate is VAT. Heaven knows how many jobs for the boys this creates. Huge office complexes have to be built, maintained, heated and lit. Large numbers of VAT inspectors running around in gas-guzzling Chelsea Tractors at our expense, causing needless polution, and all for what? I am told that the cost of collecting VAT is equal to its actual financial benefit. Let them look first at their own carbon footprint.

I will admit I know nothing about chimney hoods. However I was told that cutting ones self on stainless steel can cause blood poisening , so do be careful. Gloves?

I take Clivejamesons remarks about one man bands and sales. If its an upstairs flat, I either dont sell a machine, or get my son in law to help in the evening. Ground floor jobs are a doddle, see my article on Tail-lifts in “Off Topic”

to quote the words of the song “The Windmills of Your Mind”, ask yourself “Is the Jingle in your pocket worth the Jangle in your head?” I would work on at a steady pace as long as it suits you, and then sell/give the business to your apprentice. Why does Clivejameson say that a one man band cannot do repairs and sell new machines? I do, and I know of at least one other member who does. Neptune

The movement of the bucket handle is controlled by a 12volt winch mounted in the roof near the back. If anyone is interested in this design. I will try to get some Photos on the web. Due to Health and Safety issues. I do NOTadvise anyone to build this, I am just saying how I work. I built this for under £200 and it makes my job so much easier. Neptune

    Re: Bosch WFO 2466

Went to this machine today, The diagnosis was bang on! The double solenoid valve is a slightle odd design in that the loom connects to the coil via a sort of PCB. The coils are unusual in that the tags are bent at an angle of 90 degrees. I temporarily fitted a common coil after bending the tags. It worked but the connections to the PCB were unreliable so I have ordered a complete double valve assembly. I am very greatful for all help received. This is another odd fault to put in my little book. The other symptom of this fault is failure to dispense the detergent.

    Re: Van Signwriting

I seem to have opened a right can of worms here. I only started this cos I was bored! I guess its another case of different strokes for different Folks. I like a van cos I find cars boring. I have to park on the street, and up to now have had little vandalism. Martin says the job would be hard without a van,but dont we have a member somewhere who uses a pushbike? Ive done it myself occasionally when the job is local and the congestion is bad. Clearing filters at ten pm? I dont mind if the price is right!
It is a never ending source of amazement to me how different folks use radically different business methods. The great thing is that we all have a free choice, and if your way is different to my way, what does it matter as long as it works for you and your happy? Neptune

Oh come on old boy, you should know by now that logic does not come into the equation. Next time you pay ypur phone bill, if you are with BT, You will be asked to quote your Customer Reference number. Why would you need one of those, when you already have a unique number, namely your phone number?

Hi Kwatt and thanks for your reply. What I actually meant was, Provided that I take old machines back from the customer and take them to an approved collection point, do I still need to subscribe to Valpak?

It is my understanding that one of my options would be not join, and to take back machines on a one-for-one basis. However one needs to register ones intention not to join {how, where?] and to take old appliances to an approved collection point. How do I find out where that is? Any help appreciated Neptune

Re: Has WEEE affected anyone yet?

Roll on DHL. What is DHL?. To be honest, I havent a clue what is going on, or what I am supposed to do. I take some machines to my local scrapyard. They usually just bung you a couple of quid, mostly give no paperwork, although rarely a receipt is given. There is also a localre cycling firm for electricals, called Unplugged, which is run as a charity. They give no receipt, and claimed they have paid £500 to be exempt from WEE. A local Whitegoods member has registered as an official collection point and says I can deposit machines with him, which is very kind, but his premises is about 12 miles away, and I dont really want to spend my days hauling scrap metal all over the county. Can anyone tell me exactly what I should be doing? I probably sell less than 2 machines a week on average, so I dont want to be spending megga money on disposal, or it becomes less than wothwhile. Help! Neptune
