One of my pet hates is as follows . Five minutes before you finish the repair , the customers phone rings . She dissapears into another room, and is on the phone for half an hour . Your gasping for a fag . And to make it worse , your bustin for a pee , and her sink is full of mucky pots…

You are right about photos . At a quick glance it is easy to think you are looking at a photo of the rear bearing . What I cant figure , is if the front bearing is stuck fast , how come he has a photo of it removed? . I stand by my potato and hot water method . If the bearing is really stuck , trying to remove it cold usually results in the inner end of the bearing tube breaking away . by using boiling water , the temperature is limited to 100c . Using a blowtorch can easily melt the plastic of the drum . As you say we all have our methods . It works for me . At least I was there with some useful advice …

Yor pictures do not seem to match the captions . Cant see a picture of the front bearing . I f front bearing is stuck ,[bearing nearest machine door] proceed as follows . Take machine outside . stuff a large potato in hole where rear bearing fits , to form a water tight seal . Lay machine on its back .Pour a large kettle of boiling water into bearing tube . If it leaks keep it topped up untill you run out of water . Let it stand 3 minutes . This will expand the tube . stand machine up and remove potato . You need a steel bar , about a foot long and an inch diameter . poke bar through rear of tube so it rests against one side of bearing . Whack it with a lump hammer . move bar end across to other side and hit it again . hit each side alternately , and keep checking that it is coming out square . whipe and grease tube before fitting bearings . Never had a pulley cross threaded . Try local dump , scrapyards , waste ground , ditches , or if its like Boston , the town hall carpark etc .

In addition to Penguins wise words which I heartily endorse , Check the following . Unplug machine . Completely remove the pressure hose . Fill your wash up bowl with water . Put one end of the pipe in your mouth , and hold your finger over the far end . immerse most of the hose under water and blow into it . Look for stream of bubbles leaving pipe . swap pipe around , end for end . Repeat test . Bubbles equal leak . If it leaks , replace it .

I am going to make this my final two pennorth on the sbject . Kwatt has obviously done his homework and a lot of thinking before reaching a conclusion different from mine . This gives me cause for great respect . When do I get time to chill ? My favourite way to relax is riding my Yamaha 535 Virago motorcycle on a Sunday afternoon . [Sticking rigidly to the speed limit of course !] Beleive me it really does chill you this time of year . Once again , sincere thanks to all who shared their opinions .

The idea of a faulty taco magnet or coil did cross my mind ,but it just seems strange it worked ok for a while . Will check it out on next visit and post a reply . Many thanks .

I would agree that we have a low accident record in the UK , but we can not be complacent over even one accidental death . Regarding Irish trucks , if they do 70Mph they are either not fitted with limiters , or they are diving “with the fuse out , ” a very serious offence .
Kwatt expresses a view that our productivity would suffer if we had speed limiters . No noticable loss of productivity occured as a result of a HGV limiters . Remember a truck driver spends 80 to 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of his day driving , as opposed to our perhaps 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} ? als , in my case at least , 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of that time is in congested traffic , where speeding is impossible . I remember watching a documetary , where two cars set off together on a 200mile trip . One driver stuck to the speed limits , and the other drove like a boy racer , speeding , pedal to the metal , and overtaking dangerously . The speeder arrived 15 minutes before the other driver . That is barely enough time to change a set of Hotpoint brushes , even if you drive 200 miles a day . These times agree with my own experience , before and after limiters . I sure stirred up a wasps nest with this !neptune
ParticipantRe: AAAAAaaaaarrrrgggghhh!!!!!!!Zanussi door seal.
A very interesting topic . I have used many of the aforementioned methods , except the paper tissues and the little bar method . Is the bar inserted ” end on ” I wonder . Last time I asked a customer to help , she refused because she was wearing £35 worth of false nails . I had thought of making a special tool for the job , but perhaps I dont do enough of them to justify it . I magine a large diameter metal tube that would just fit over the door boot . Its length would only be about 5cms . It might need to be adjustable in diameter to fit different models , which could be acheived by slotted bolt-up joint . First fit the garter ring onto the tube . a sprag or spike on one end of the tube would prevent it slipping off while fitting. then slip the tube over the rubber . now push the garter ring off the far end of the tube. The far end of the tube might need to be castellated [ like the battlements of a castle] to help the process . Sudden nasty thought , would the tool fit through the any cmments?door hole in the front panel ? I asume everybody takes the door off to facilitate the job ?

Just as a precaution , get a torch and check door rubber for holes . Some times very hard to spot

This is a bit of a puzzle . I always say th at leaks are easier to fix than find . the common cause of leaking when pumping out is as follows .Does yhe machine drain into a vertical stand pipe ? If so a blocked or partly blocked drain will cause wter to overtop the standpipe , and run under the machine , thus fooling you . If the outlet pipe of the machine exits near th floor , direct from the pump , there is nowhere high up that can leak only whilst pumping . Another possibility is a prforated waste pipe . Place a bowl or bucket on a chair or similar ,and let the the machine pump out into that . Stop it in full flow with your thumb , and look for leaks on the waste hose . It is not impossible for a pump to leak only when working , but rare with modern pumps . Do not work on machine while it is plugged in to the mains . Good luck .

Its great to hear the different views about speed regulators that have been expressed . Like I said , I did not expect every one to share my views . That wood have been boring . I liked the idea of getting rid of speed bumps . Regarding bypass kits , I beleive the day might come when speeding will be as socially unaccepteable as Drink driving , and such people would be reported by the public . But then I also beleive in the Tooth Fairy . If these speed regulators were controlled by roadside transmitters , speed limits could be changed at a moments notice , to match prevailing conditions . No more motorway carnage in fog . Also , if everyones max speed was the same , it would encourage the use of smaller vehicles with more economical engines . thanks for sharing your views . Any more coments/ ideas?

I agree that it is poor driving that causes accidents . But when an accident occurs , The slower you are travelling , the better you will fair . And what about the other benefits ? They can not be lightly dismissed . Any more comments anyone ?

ParticipantRe: Zanussi FJ1093 draining problem
It sounds like a faulty pump . Not easy to get at on a Zanussi . Most likely cause is a small object such as a match or a rubber band jamming the pump impeller . Unless you are qualified/experienced , call an engineer . If you are determined to attempt DIY , be sure to pull the mains electriciy plug out of the wall socket first
