ParticipantI have obtained quality work through UKW directory, despite operating over a relatively small patch.
SIGN UP – you KNOW it makes sense.

ParticipantHi,
If you are doing the work yourself you will be able complete it for under £100. Bearing in mind what you said – “Loud for many months”, – you will need the following components to make the repair – bearing and seal set, tub centre seal, and drum support. If you have the work done professionally, most engineers will charge for 2 hours work – it is a TOTAL demolition job! Establish hourly rate 1st.
If you put up your postcode, a UKW engineer in your area may be able advise frurther.

ParticipantMartin – we need an archive of the retired avatars otherwise this thread will make no sense at all!

ParticipantHi Mcd,
Check the following:1 – filters in the machine (obvious)
2 – outlet coupling – if the machine is coupled to a sink outlet, check that joint – it can sludge up.
3 – the syphon stop valve is part of the fill hose and is therefore irrelevant to your current predicament.
4 – I assume the machine has not movedin its 3 years. This is quite an adequate period of time for a “crushproof” drain hose to collapse if nipped!Few thoughts there, if none of this sorts you out either check in Directories for a local UKW engineer, or stick your post code in here and someone will help you.

ParticipantI’ve just bought a Renault! If I can fit that profile, things will be getting better!

ParticipantHi Rob,
So your middle name isn’t “lucky” then? Couple of points here.
Firstly, if the machine indeed has a new module fitted and is configured correctly immediate failure is exceedingly unlikely. A conflab with your friend should produce an invoice and a claim against Bosch. You may have to play that a bit canny as you are a member of the public and some manufacturers can be a little “funny” in these situations!Secondly, in the Directories section there are several firms which repair electronic boards, at a sensible saving when compared with new prices.
Thirdly, the drain pump itself can show a circuit through it and still not run. The new type “magnetic” drain pumps wear their casings and become intermittent and erratic in action. This is a cheap and easy fix, Mr Conway will be able to advise you as to to cost for a 3 lug twist fit Askoll type pump.
However, if you are not confident, replacement may be your best option. A bit of patience and some phone calls will probably find you a reconditioned appliance with a years warranty (We do them but I can’t deliver from Leeds to Brighton or offer product support at that distance!).
Failing all else, as you said, saving time. They really are terrible things – once you’ve had one you can’t go back to washing up!
Good luck,

ParticipantHi Dave,
That’ll fit – Rold compact, it’s got a short body. Got any at a sensible price?I’ll take 2 if you have!
Thanks and regards,

ParticipantNothing’s really changed – it’s 17 years since I left Comet, and even then the retail staff were earning more commission selling a “4 star warranty” (the extra 4 years……) than selling the appliance themselves.
The RRP was doomed from the time that Comet started to sell Newpol (Domar) and Solartronic (Balay) washers, Vestfrost, Polar Queen and King fridges, Tecnogas cookers and so forth. Buy your own, sell it for what you want.
Couple that to the big court case when Hotpoint sued Comet for not selling at RRP. The compromise arrived at (re-introducing English Electric so that Comet could have it as it’s own brand) is almost certainly the root cause of where things are now.
It’s perhaps depressing at one level, but Hey, this is where we’re at – now we need to bang on and deal with situation. We all accept that anything below £300 on the washer front is likely to be cr@p, but the public don’t know that and need to be repetatively told until the message starts to creep slightly below the surface!
This is surely a part of our mission on this site, despite the “pointless” message from some of our correspondents.
Now I’M depressed……..

ParticipantYou said it Rob – I am currently dealing with a Bosch WFF2001 for a landlord which won’t turn on the hot water valve. Bosch price for module – £173.18 + p+p + VAT! I can fix this at board level – its a sticking relay – but it’s going to come to £50 approx; and the landlord will argue about that! It’s just thankless sometimes.

ParticipantRob,
Sorry about that – sent you on a wild goose chase. The slimline has a sealed sump, so access is from underneath. Very sorry! If your chap coming tomorrow is not a UKW member – tell him to sign up!
Good luck,

ParticipantNO, no, no! The 6 screws retain the entire sump assembly – do not mess with. The little cover is about an inch square, IN the sump at 10 o’clock, in the bottom.

ParticipantRob,
Drain out as much water as you can. Remove lower basket, rotor and filters. At the 10 o’clock position in the sump there is a cover plate, retained by a single Torx headed screw. The drain pump impellor is below this cover, so any detritus can be removed.Pull the plug first!
