No, a defrost heater shouldn’t damage the cover, unless that particular model is prone to that. Perhaps it has stuck on defrost.
Partial build-up of ice at the beginning of the evaporator like that, with the rest of it clear would indicate a shortage of refrigerant, but in that case the temperature wouldn’t get down to -18. I think you need to test the refrigeration system first, but am wondering if there are are two faults on this machine. I don’t think I can help you any further.Bryan r600a is usually pretty good on long-distance diagnosis of this sort of problem; where is he when we need him?

If you mean it filled up and then emptied straight away without tumbling or circulating, the drain hose could be too low down so that it’s syphoning out when the water level gets to the same height as the top of the drain hose

Although that condenser needs cleaning it’s not bad enough to be causing the symptoms you’ve got. You need to establish first whether it’s a defrosting problem or a thermostatic control problem. It’s obviously not a refrigeration system problem [ie compressor or gas leak] if the freezer’s getting down to -18C and the fridge to 3C.
I’m not familiar with that model but I think you need to take the freezer evaporator cover off and inspect the evaporator to see if ice is building up on it, thus blocking the air circulation around the freezer. If it is [although I suspect it isn’t as the temp is varying wildly] you have to find whether it’s the heater, or a defrost thermostat or thermistor, or the pcb [or mechanical timer if it’s not electronic] causing it not to defrost.
If the evaporator isn’t iced up I think you’ve got a temperature control problem; evaporator thermistor or pcb not switching the compressor back on, or indeed whether it’s sticking on defrost, and thus rapidly getting up to 4degrees in the freezer.
Faults on this sort of fridge freezer can be difficult to diagnose even when you’re used to them. If you’re not sometimes you have to spend a lot of time finding your way around them, but sometimes it’s best to walk away.
If we’re lucky perhaps someone familiar with the model will pick up on the thread.

If the machine is controlled by a mechanical timer it will have a thermostat/thermostats not an ntc thermistor. Dishwasher thermostats are sometimes located inside the door, in which case what you’ve found will be a toc which may have operated as a result of a thermostat or timer fault.

Is it a frost-free freezer? If so. is the freezer evaporator iced up?

Oldtog wrote:nomadPaul, what is the stability like on the screw item here. I would have thought a centre screw would wobble like crazy, or have I the wrong end of the idea here. Do you have a photo of a machine (tumble dryer or oven) on the item.
Dave
The stability is fine; it doesn’t wobble about.

Using 3 or 4 suppliers and comparing prices is ok in theory, but when you’ve got a day’s jobs to go out on there just isn’t the time. Either that or you’re spending your whole evening compiling orders. If you’re not careful you can spend hours trying to get the price of an order down a few pounds which is self-defeating in the end.
Ken’s comment about trade and retail prices is valid though. Connect’s Hotpoint and BSH trade prices are often way higher than the manufacturers’ retail . You have to ring them and they normally give you sensible reductions.

Well Ernie and Eric are making such a good job of it I think I’ll just let them finish it off 😆

I had an excellent holiday thanks Jim. By the way, have I ever told you how I got into this business ❓

Jim.
I don’t remember telling you about that, Jim, but I suppose I must have done 😀 . The difference between then and now is that I was doing Currys a favour taking it; the Manager said so. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

That’s the one. Never thought of using it for a tumble dryer though; thanks for that idea Paul.
