ParticipantRe: Has anyone heard of The Appliance Academy
Would just like to add that i spoke with John again today .
We had a lengthy conversation regarding the CK1 course (I will speak with John about the refrigeration course once the CK1 is done). John explained everything to me and i was happy to find that what i needed would be catered for on this course.
The course details that John provided, reminded me of the Dixon training course that i attended .so i think the training academy will be a very good addition for up and coming engineers like myself and also for anyone who wants to start from scratch or just to refresh there training ,as there are very little courses available (i know i have looked everywhere ) to add extra strings to my bow so to speak..
John explained why booking up front is necessary and he also said that he does provide all details (even before you book a course) You just have to ring him and he will answer any query’s that anyone has. Just like he did with me.

Martin wrote::hmm: But it would be difficult to combine tuition on ovens and hobs with washers and dishwashers over a 5 day course. So a course more specific to any product group has to be more beneficial for the student. The safety and testing aspect of cookers and hobs for example can be quite different than that of a freestanding washing machine.
Therefore I think it a good idea to have these courses split in the way The Appliance Academy has chosen to do. Also, looking at their website, specifically the refrigeration course page, the training venue looks spacious and well laid out. I would think the fridge course includes system repairs by the looks of it.
Fair play to John and his team I say. And we can only hope more dedicated training facilities such as this become more widespread throughout the UK. There is a need, there is a need for greater NVQ type courses specific to domestic appliances. Such institutions should be encouraged not criticised! 😀
I would say that i agree with Martin here regarding cookers and hobs ..I do have an understanding of electrics and yes cookers do have elements and stats etc that can easily be tested similar to washing machines as Lawrence says .But you also need to know the correct way to install them and to make sure repairs are left safe when finished and properly earthed..
Then there is the factor if you were asked to install a hob or cooker , that the circuit will handle the power of some of the more powerful cookers ..No good fitting a cooker that will cause tripping because the MCB fuse is not rated for that specific cooker .I know all about Diversity and how to calculate the factors , but a little training is always better than none at all .

Hi Guys,
Thanks for asking some of the questions that i would not have asked due to being a bit wet behind the ears so to speak on refrigeration especially (as this is a course i am also interested in as well as the electric cooker course ) . I am looking to add as much skill as possible .But i want to do it right and safely for me and any customers i encounter down the line!!
I am fine regarding washers/dryers,tumble dryers and dishwashers , as i trained properly to do this and still learning as each appliance is slightly different and sometimes unique faults that most of us have never en counted before crop up. But at least i can do it safely with the knowledge i have through proper training.
Only started the thread because i wanted to know if anyone here had done any of the courses, or knew of the training center to see if it is worthy of doing to get more training on certain appliances that i have not already trained for.

P.s I find that statement rather offensive ..I might not like the way you look but i would not label you ,like you have done to females !

ParticipantRe: Tattoos
Just thought I’d respond as i am covered in tattoo’s and get discriminated so many times by people who look at “The book and judge the cover ” until they have a conversation with me and realize i don’t bite !!
This has held me back for years but tattoo’s are becoming more acceptable than when i was a kid..
I don’t smoke and only drink occasionally and love my ink but peoples minds do need to be changed from the stigma of tattoo’s !!

I did Martin and found loads 😀 ..I wanted to know what certificates i would need for just gas cookers ..not bothered about other stuff like boilers etc ..so don’t want to waste money on a course that deals with stuff i am not bothered about 😉

ParticipantRe: Which Smartphone ?
Just like to add that i got mine from amazon as it was sim free and a good price compared to high street but i would do what Martin says and haggle the price if you go to one of the shops.Mine arrived in no time at all and i took a 3yr guarantee out for £38 in case it got damaged.
Shaun
p.s just like to add that you can download Kies software from samsung which will update your firmware if you want the latest version..It gives you options to back up your data as well..It is really easy to add tech stuff using kies …Once you plug the phone into the pc it will say found new hardware and will give you option to open the phone using windows ..Double click the icon and you can see all the data on the phone on your pc..You can then add a new folder to the opened window ,name it say tech stuff and then copy any tech stuff you have on the pc to this folder ..Once you remove the usb cable from phone your tech stuff will be on there ..or you can download it a number of ways ,email etc.

ParticipantRe: Which Smartphone ?
It’s all about what you prefer to carry really..A Tablet is a good choice ..But i went for the samsung galaxy s smartphone as mentioned..
Mine worked right out of the box and is sim free so i can use any sim card .
Depends if you want it on a contract .
There are loads of free stuff you can download from the marketplace which comes with the phone .You can also buy some applications from the market place which are really cheap but i have not need to yet.
I had no problem getting my tech stuff on the phone but i am pretty good at sorting things out on pcs..
Cost is roughly about £300 for the galaxy s now and they do have the new galaxy s2 out which is a lot more.
That’s if you buy it outright like i did ,then you just choose what sort of package you need i.e internet, calls etc..
like on most phones..
Or you can go to one of the phone shops and get the phone free with a contract .I did have the i phone 4 but changed it for the above and prefer this .It’s quick to access the internet and have had no issues with adding tech stuff to the phone.
There is a couple of good forums that are pretty helpful if you get stuck using the phone.
It’s just a matter of playing around with it and finding what you need.It all depends on whether you want a new phone that can work like a pc or go for just a Tablet pc.
For me the phone is just the right size to fit in my pocket and i can easily read my pdfs on the screen in page view.
I am sure others will chime in on what they have.
It’s just a matter of which you go for..I am well happy with mine and it’s now replaced my laptop for tech stuff and what not.
