    Re: Domestic Appliance Testing

Hey Paul: Where can I buy one of those?, if it can test everything it would save me a packet in test gear & the hassle of lugging it around 😆

    Re: testing

Hi Wilf: Personally I would’nt work on it in those sort of conditions, never mind customer safety what about your safety? Make sure you give the Landlord / Agent a written account of what you found & preferably send recorded delivery so you have proof they received it. Also make a note on the job sheet.

    Almost done! 😉

Nice 1, My Nephew asked a question regarding loop testing a while back but sadly had no replies (Trying to get him to look for answers to things on his own, rather than spoon feed him the info) so I ended up having to tell him.

Keep up the good work mate: Andy

O.K I missed something, what’s much more important??

As for the question of trading standards, there seem to be so many different opinions withing the trade that I was trying to clarify the matter.

The Meggers thread seems to have gone by the board, how are you getting on with the write up?

Hi Lee: The Law regarding safety testing after completion of a repair in Domestic premises seems Grey to say the least & I can’t get a straight answer.

Let’s not get too confused here about what is law and what isn’t. The fact is that there are regulations that cover all aspects of electrical safety and HSE as well as other government backed bodies and institutions all have it in black and white. No grey areas there at all I think you’ll find.

Martin: Maybe you should re-read what I said, & I think you’ll find it’s not me who’s confused, Trading standards even on a Higher level cannot give a straight answer on the requirement for safety testing. There are different answers depending on who you talk to or when you talk to them, personally I really do’nt give a damn 1 way or the other I was just trying to get a straight answer from them & clarify the point.

Maybe. I don’t read newspapers. But I have heard on the radio that judging by recent press releases it is suicide to step outside my front door without an armed guard if I live in the UK.

If you want a Bodyguard, you can have the wifes stepmother FREE. She could even scare King Kong.

Hey Lee: That’s where we all go wrong mate: We expect the customers to pay us for repairs & not us pay them for the experience.
Ho Hum I seem to be getting cynical 😆

Good like that are’nt they. You go out to replace the on/off switch, 3 -4 months down the line you go to clear a blocked pump & they blame you cause your the only 1 ever looked at it or give you the 1 about it’s never worked right since your last visit but we thought we would give you another chance 😈 Anyone know the number of a good Shrink? 😆

Already got her in the book Mike & sending a bill out on Monday :rolls:

BTW where is the evidence for this much bandied about “fact” that most engineers don’t even own a megger?

I’ve spoken to several Trading standards officers some say it is Law others say not, some say it comes under the Electricity at work act & again others say not.
Personally as you i’ve spent a lot on test gear & will carry on testing Law or not, helps me sleep at night.

Re: Pat Test Failure Whirlpool ADP4501/5

1 thing to check: If the tester has user settable pass / fail parameters check that these have not been set too low.
What did they fail on? was it the insulation test or touch current? if it’s touch current then this is not listed as a statutory test but supplementary soft test, if it was insulation what were his test results? From table 15.2 of the IEE code of practice the pass level for Insulation resistance is given as 1 Megohm at 500v applied test voltage so going on your results then the appliance is safe.
Can you update us when you have been back & checked it out? would be nice to know the conclusion.

    Hope that helps: Andy

Hey Alex, don’t appologise mate. If this thread makes just 1 or 2 people wake up & take safety seriously then it has been worth it, I don’t know about you but I come across appliances both Commercial & Domestic left in a poor & Electricaly unsafe condition way too often for my liking. I allways thought that as “Engineers” we were supposed to be in a higher class than the DIY repairer, obviously not. If what we have said has been controvercial & rattled a few feathers then so be it.
As for Graham Dixon: He does write the Haynes DIY repair manuals but is also an excellent engineer of many years experience & 1 of the best trainers for our trade that I have ever come across. 8)
