Re: Questions for a PCB (electronic) whiz kid?

Hi Martin: A Triac that’s physically blown apart is usualy due to the component it drives shorting out or drawing prolonged excess current.
Triacs can & do sometimes blow without outside cause but normally with no physical signs.
Unfortunately as with Transistors, Triacs can have different pin configurations. Having said that those in domestic appliances do tend to follow the same pin out, but a good Semiconductor reference book can be very useful especially if trying to find an equivalent.
Triacs can be easily tested out of circuit using an Analogue meter as follows: Identify MT1, MT2 & Gate terminals set the meter to Rx1 on the ohms range. Connect the meter across MT1 / MT2 either way around & this should read completely o/c i.e infinity.
Short the MT2 lead to the Gate lead the ohms reading should now go low.
Remove the short & the low reading should stay the same.

Semiconductor reference books & replacement Triacs can be obtained from http://www.cpc.co.uk

Re: Hoover Nextra HNF 3157 Washing Machine.

Just to finish this topic: Checked the machine this afternoon, no Neutral to the interlock from Control module. Checked through wiring no faults, so bridged interlock Live in to Live out to get into test mode which showed an interlock or wiring fault so it’s off to the nice man at EMW.
Thanks for the replies lads, especially Martin for the Diagnostic chart.

Hi Guys Sorry that should have read SERVICE MANUAL not Manual.
The fault I have is machine went through a program fine & stopped at the end o.k, Now it just sits there with the stop light flashing, the door doesn’t lock & obviously none of the controls work so it wont go into test.
Only done 1 of these before so as it’s the wifes thought i’d get as much info as poss before starting, (I don’t really like cold tongue) 🙂
    Thanks : Andy.

Hey how do you get the customers that give you tea & cake? Half the estates I go to you wouldn’t dare accept a cuppa from them.
I agree, idiots that play with things they don’t understand give us more work. It just Pi$$-S me off that they get away with robbing people like that & then we usually get a lot less for putting the mess right after them.

Hi all: What a pathetic website, looks & sounds bogus. Unfortunately I won’t be going to cardiff for the next week or so, but next time I do I think i will look them up.
As far as I know Trefforest industrial estate is just that an industrial estate & I dont remember seeing these people there but it is quite a big place. Sounds a bit like a firm that phoned me three times this week reconning they can help me sort out debtors legally 😆 for just a small fee of £200 per year :rolls:

Hi Mate: Unfortunately this is not an item I have ever come across, but I would have thought that they mean it has lost it’s settings & these are normally stored in eprom. Loss of data can be caused by mains supply problems, bad connections to the board, or if the eprom is in a holder bad pin connections on the holder.

Phidom wrote:Yes, putting right someones cockup is usually much harder than if you were given the job in the first place. I remember when I worked at Dunlop and we had day shift and night shift sparkies. Invariably, one shift would dismantle something for repair, make no notes of which wire went where, order the required parts and leave it for the other shift to put it back together 😆

Yep been in that sort of situation, I trained as a sparks originally & spent most of my time as a troubleshooter for various companies, clearing up other peoples mess. Then I thought I would have a change & go into appliances full time :rolls: 😆

Hi Guys: Just had a quote from these people: http://www.tradesmancover.co.uk, £72.47 for £2 million cover on Electrical appliance repairs. This does not cover re-gassing etc if you do this sort of thing.

Hi & thanks for the reply I would be glad to recommend ISE to anyone & if i could get hold of them that would be great, when I spoke to the rep a few months back I was told that you had to buy 3 machines to start you off. As i work from home I just dont have the space to do this.
