Do you buy expensive/quality machines, and expect them to last say 15 years or accept buying a cheap machine perhaps 2 or 3 times in the same period as the more expensive should last.

I usually say when asked what to recommend,
Do you buy, say 4 cheap machines @ £250 ish (over a period of say 20 years) or do you pay a grand for a miele expecting it to last the same number of years. Brands are just for comparisons at the ends of the spectrum. ?
Question is at the end of the time scale which approach will be the best one, after 45 years or more I really couldn’t say.
Add to that my old garage man always said ” you can buy a good car off a bad dealer and a bad car off a good dealer”.
I let customers make their own choice, who knows what cost cutting exercise has been made in the last few production months reducing spec’s and quality of components.
If it s cheap you know what you are getting, if it’s expensive is it quality, can’t be sure anymore, sadly!Re: Beko washing machine heater fault
You could also check that the machine is filling with the correct amount of water.

It doesn’t take a huge over dose a smaller than usual load and user puts in generous amounts of detergent ,if cotton washes are used then water level is lower,more vigorous drum rotation so over sudsing occurs, saw it frequently in commercials that aren’t automatically dosed (detergent need to match load size) and they always left the white powder on element.
3 Phase machines, so three elements and the top one opposite to the drum rotation always copped it, because it was the first to get exposed to air, used to have a company bulletin somewhere on the subject.
Check it’s not a cheap powder that’s causing over sudsing.
have they changed powders.
Having said that could be coincidence and total bad luck.

Could also be detergent related, over sudsing perhaps which can expose heater to air pockets.

Chap arrives home from work and sits down for a meal with the wife, during conversation he mentions that it’s rumoured that their current milkman has had all of the women on the estate bar one , wife says “I bet it’s that posh bit across the road” !

When checking the resistance the readings of the two windings individually which both use the common and they should add up to the same as when read across both windings.
If it’s tripping out with seconds could be the start device, if it cuts out only when motor gets hot there might be a refrigerant loss causing the problem.
The internal protection device is a over heat protector.
Wouldn’t be worth a repair then.

Yeh, good luck with the retirement.
I’m of a similar age (67) and have been on appliances since 73,have things changed or what, I did intend to pull the plug at 65 but have found that I enjoy working a bit as I can mostly choose where and when, I have done a fair bit of commercial stuff and find that suits me, especially now, and have just renewed my f-gas for another 5 years, I’ll have a re think at 72 🙂 .

Hi,
could be the defrost circuit, also maybe compressor, condenser fan motor or water on electrics somewhere.
You need an engineer equipped with a meggar (tests for insulation faults)which will be used to find the guilty component, then when repaired it needs testing again with a meggar to ensure it’s safe for you or anyone else in the family to use.
Not a repair for an unqualified person IMO,my advice is to bite the bullet and get an engineer in, what if you make the wrong decision and it’s not the element, taking a gamble could cost you unnecessary expense.Re: Iceland fridge freezer doesn’t like the cold.
Hi, Congrats on your initiative.It reminds me of an Electrolux absorption fridge RA510 in the late 70’s which had a built in freezer box, It shut down for days in cold weather.
The company developed a 3″square 10watt heater plate which we fitted just below the thermostat and wired in so it came on in the off cycle,took a bit of explaining to customers, shame they aren’t available now although electronic controlled ones might make it that more difficult to overcome.
Seems like a 10 watt light bulb (is there one available?) left on, if they can stand it will do the same.Re: Hotpoint EW73G
That’s great, it’s a friend who rents out a small cottage, just had two girl tenants in, what a mess, don’t think the deposit which they paid will cover the repair costs.

I thought you came over well, couldn’t argue with what you said at all in the little time allowed, deserves a dedicated programme.
Buy cheap buy twice is a saying in our family but I always say to customers “do you buy a Miele for £1000 or 4 Indesits at £250 each to cover the same period, whats going to be the best in the end? I cant tell them what would work out best even after 45 years in the trade, luck also has a part to play.
Stuff is certainly very cheap, alarmingly so at times.
Unfortunately probably 70{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the public will go for the cheap stuff either through economic hardship or on impulse, they think risk the cheapy, that in itself keeping prices down because companies are all in competition, more so at the lower end, it@s a sort of pressure from the public on the companies because the majority buy cheap.
In the end customers are set in their ways and in the quality of purchases they make be it appliances. cars, furniture etc, they don’t very often change either.
