ParticipantRe: Qualtex Account Closure
Just done a price comparison for an urgent order – Electrolux 1320041054, Qualtex £37.26, ASW £30.48, both including next day delivery and VAT. None of my suppliers beats ASW on this order. ASW’s next day delivery cut-off is 4pm rather than 3pm.
Needless to say, ASW got my order. It seems clear Qualtex’s business growth strategy is through retail rather than wholesale. So perhaps they are actually doing us a favour by closing accounts? Unless they use the old trick of sending out a pattern part rather than genuine.

ParticipantRe: Does anyone use Paym to receive payments
It is free. I suspect they bank on a small proportion of payees forgetting to set up to receive the payment, leaving the sending bank in profit. A bit like gift cards, 6{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the value of which is never used, leaving the shop in profit.

ParticipantRe: Qualtex Account Closure
It seems an odd business strategy. I have read many times it is more cost effective to work with existing customers to retain and grow business than to try and attract new customers. To refuse to deal with them anymore without any prior discussion seems idiotic. However, for my business, with access to least 12 other trade suppliers, the loss of our Qualtex account is not something I will lose any sleep over.

ParticipantRe: Qualtex Account Closure
It does seem an odd strategy. Perhaps they see their future in direct retail sales. It is certainly a bad thing for our trade, reducing competition between suppliers. Unless new players enter the market, I see Connect raising prices and a future where we are forced to deal direct with the manufacturers.

Nil, I would imagine, other than a tiny IT overhead and possibly credit risk insurance.

Does it think there is still water in the tub? Have you checked the motor brushes?

ParticipantRe: Interesting Listen
I found the second episode stomach churning – my worst fears confirmed – not a good reflection on our trade.

ParticipantRe: Interesting Listen
Be careful what you say Martin as TheSpinDoctor may be listening. He certainly seems to mean well, although with a no second visit policy and a maximum repair charge of £75, I can’t help thinking he must be writing off a fair few machines unnecessarily. If indeed this heavily edited interview accurately reflects the way he operates his business.

ParticipantRe: Masterpart
Well said Ken, I have accounts with all of them except LF, and can vouch for the substantial price differences. There is no rhyme or reason – one of the smaller suppliers can sometimes offer the same genuine part as Connect or Qualtex, but at half the price.
To get good prices, you have to shop around continually. Those with reps are pretty quick to up the discounts after they speak to me, but then a few months later the prices start creeping up again. It’s like any of the major retailers or utility companies – offer an attractive deal to start and then rely on customer apathy to stick with them when the prices go up.
I also often deal direct with BSH, Electrolux and Whirlpool/Indesit, especially for low volume parts, as their trade discounted prices are sometimes cheaper than the wholesalers, if a little slower to despatch.

I opened an account with Maddocks a few years back and they barred me from their website as I hadn’t ordered in a month. They’ve changed their tune now, their stock levels are reasonable, prices are good and the whole operation seems pretty customer focused and slick.

Anyone got a pair of those metal cutters tucked away on the van?

ParticipantRe: Masterpart
I agree that Masterpart are keenly priced for stuff they have in stock. Pricing and stock can fluctuate day by day. They are not good on special orders in my experience.
Maddocks are well worth registering for. They revamped their website and improved their terms early this year and I find they often win on price, cost of delivery (free above £60, like Masterpart) and on special orders.
I support these smaller suppliers whenever I can to do my bit to counter what I see as the unhealthy dominance of Connect and Qualtex in this sector.

ParticipantRe: Public liability insurance what do you pay
Direct Line £201, domestic appliance maintenance, 1 manual worker, 1 clerical worker, £10 million employer liability, £5 million public liability, £250 excess, excludes processes involving application of heat.

ParticipantRe: how to repair website – who is he?
His official address is shown in the website terms and conditions (both South Wales and Portugal).

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool Dishwasher
The parts diagrams reveal it’s a rebadged Hotpoint/Indesit. In fact every single dishwasher model now listed on the Whirlpool UK website is now a rebadged Hotpoint/Indesit.
