Re: How many engineers in the uk??

For my business, the answers are 1, No, No, No.

According to Labour Force Survey data, there are around 76,000 people employed in the UK in electronic and electronic trades “not elsewhere classified” and 14,000 self-employed. This categories covers everyone in electrical and electronic trades other than electricians and electrical fitters, telecommunications engineers, TV, video and audio engineers and IT engineers. It also excludes assemblers of electrical and electronic products and vehicle electricians. But doubtless a lot broader than the white goods repair trade.

There’s some information about employment in the household goods repair sector, probably based on HMRC or Companies House data, but I doubt the data behind it is that robust. It would include admin staff in this sector and likely exclude engineers employed by manufacturers and retailers.

A good engineer never blames his tools… but screwdriver tips do blunt over time. Unless the screw is rusted in, a relatively new (hand) screwdriver with the correct tip (for Korean machines Philips No 2 rather than Pozidrive No 2) should fit snugly in the head. For those tight lid screws, I find leaning over the machine from the front can give better leverage.

I don’t have any worries about fixing these dryers. At worst, 1 in 10,000 catch fire each year, and after clearing airways, the risk should be even lower. As long as I take reasonable care to check the machine over, I fail to see how any blame could be shifted onto me.

Interesting, within the same category, the Metrahit ISO is marketed specifically for home appliance service technicians, only £584 plus VAT at Reichelt.

It sounds as though the Metrahit all in one could be a worthy successor to my 2nd Seaward Primetest 200 (sadly no longer available). Do you have the model details for yours, kaibart?

Re: Whirlpool to do a recall on Hotpoint dryers

It could get more interesting if, in a few years time, owners of modified dryers, the LFB and others, discover that the supposedly safe modified dryers, effectively given a new lease of life with the new parts fitted, with poor maintenance and venting, start catching fire again.

A la Samsung Note 7, only in slow motion.

On a similar vein, one customer today, after inviting me in, his first question was, “Oh, can I just check, do you have public liability insurance?” I am not sure whether I should be worried by that. Maybe it was just his way of trying to make sure I took care not to damage anything, perhaps as he has had a bad experience in the past.

For the record, I replaced both plastic parts with the superseded parts and the problem is resolved. The rear bracket of the horizontal tube had warped slightly, effectively shortening it. The new rising tube has also been modified with bigger internal diameter to the nozzles.

Royal Mail is a good deal more reliable than UKMail here (as used by one well known wholesaler).

    Re: Saturday delivery

It would be helpful if suppliers offered a choice of delivery methods, at different prices. They offer this on their retail sites, so why not for the trade?

For example, Royal Mail 1st class or Royal Mail 24 will usually get delivered on a Saturday morning if despatched on a Friday, and often at lower cost.

Re: Whirlpool to do a recall on Hotpoint dryers

Yet again, the implication of the reporting is that Whirlpool dryers are affected, no mention of Hotpoint, Indesit or Creda. Interestingly, the main tumble dryer featured at the LFB offices is a recent Bosch condenser dryer – I dare say no manufacturer is immune.

A new single electrical recall register will make no difference. People still won’t bother to register.

In fact there are already two official registers! First, there is AMDEA’s http://www.registermyappliance.org.uk, second, there is the Retail Ombudsman’s recently launched http://www.ukrecall.org.uk.

The irony is that Ukrecall claim to be the UK’s first central register, so were seemingly unaware of registermyappliance. If these trade and government bodies don’t know what each other are doing, how do they expect the public to engage?

Re: Bosch SMS40A08GB/03 upper spray arm issue

Thanks both for your helpful replies. No, I’m pretty sure the rear tube bracket is secured to the back of the dishwasher.

The problem is that when the water pump starts, a gap opens up between the “female” nozzles at the back of the dishwasher and the “male” nozzles at the back of the basket, causing loss of pressure to the upper arm. nomadPaul’s earlier post suggesting that the rear wall of the dishwasher was flexing outwards in use sounded plausible. The rear wall is certainly much more flexible than the previous (decent quality) generation of Bosch dishwashers.

I also noticed both the rear pipe and the spray arm assembly have been superseded (by part nos 11003121 and 11003121), and wondered if the parts been modified to improve the coupling.

I’ve never repaired a board, but replaced hundreds. The cost is often not prohibitive, particularly for newer, mid-range machines. I guess it depends a lot on your customer base.

Great machine, close to Miele quality, if otherwise good, well worth the £59 for a new motor front end.
