ParticipantRe: Melting Smeg WDi12C6 washer my fault?
It is perfectly understandable that the customer would think you were responsible, given the machine overheated immediately after you left. The best course of action may be to offer to re-inspect the machine to identify the cause. Perhaps a heater relay has stuck in the “on” position for example, a very rare fault and something which you could not reasonably have foreseen from the original symptoms.
I note you say there were two ntcs at the back of the machine. Is it possible the ntc connections have somehow got swapped round, so for example the machine is reading dryer intake temperature instead of wash temperature, or reading a replacement heater’s integral ntc when it should be reading the original tub-mounted ntc, possibly with a different temperature characteristic?

ParticipantRe: Beko CEO On The Future
He seems guilty of hugely exaggerating the environmental credentials of their latest machines, eg 5 litre water consumption on their latest dishwasher compered to 20 to 25 litres on a 5 year old machine. I think you’d need to go back at least 25 years to get those types of water consumption figures in Europe, although I guess on recent American dishwashers, the consumption might be a lot higher.

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint Tool Case 19
If you’re happy to consider an alternative style, Veto Pro Pac are the best tool cases I’ve found. Expensive but very hard wearing.
I use the Tech LC model, which has space for umpteen hand tools one side and large pockets for test meters, etc, on the other side. I find this carries all the tools I need for 95{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of jobs. A bigger version, the Tech XL, is also available.
Beesleys tools are the UK distributors:

ParticipantRe: How much credit to extend to work providers?
I used to worry about late payment, but now just add £10 to the bill to cover the credit risk. If they are letting agents I’ve not heard of I ask for payment in advance.

Another setup with a “virtual” office, turnover £2.7m in year to 31 March 2016, up from £400k in previous (first) year.
It’s run by a sole director called Gregory Keartland – I wonder if it’s the young guy named Greg Keartland on Facebook, apparently enjoying a lavish lifestyle abroad.
They made it to national news in March:

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool to do a recall on Hotpoint dryers
The problem with advising customers to contact Hotpoint if they have a problem is that they are taking around 10 weeks to even offer an appointment or replacement machine, and very few owners are prepared to wait that long. If a customer reports a fault (especially a burning smell), of course they need to be told to register, but it is in their best interests meanwhile to have it properly checked out.
Do you also refuse to repair other appliances that have been recalled due to fire risk eg the many Bosch and Hotpoint dishwashers, Beko fridge freezers and Beko tumble dryers? From what I’ve heard in the past, the Beko fridge freezer issue has been the most deadly, with numerous fatalities resulting, and doubtless millions still unmodified in the field.
There is a danger of getting sucked into the media hype and we need to put the risks into perspective. I have repaired hundreds of these Hotpoint dryers over 11 years and have only once seen one that had almost caught fire. The only dryers I have seen that had actually caught fire were both Hoovers (both motor/capacitor fires, luckily burnt out by themselves). The other significant burnouts have been to Bosch dishwasher modules, probably a handful or two over the years, luckily none big enough to spread to the control panel.

ParticipantRe: Footwear?
I favour quality rubber soled leather shoes, eg ecco, Timberland, etc. They cost around £100 to buy, but are extremely comfortable, non-slip and last for ages. They look slightly out of place with regular workwear, mind you, so I’ve had to smarten up my uniform to match.
Oh, and a pair of rubber wellies in the van for those muddy “outdoor” jobs.
I won’t use overshoes as they create a slip hazard. Socked feet in the kitchen are a definite no no for the same reason and due to the obvious risk of dropped tools, etc.
I always wipe my shoes thoroughly on each mat as I enter, and if the weather is wet, take a clean towel with me to wipe them on as I enter. If the customer is obviously houseproud, I offer to take my shoes off before crossing their carpet and put them back on in the kitchen. Sometimes its easier to ask if there is a back door (assuming they’ve not already asked you to go round the back).

If we were not in the EU, we would not have benefitted from free trade with the single European market of 1992, so would not have attracted the massive amount of investment in the UK by overseas companies, which has hugely benefitted our economy.
With the reduction in revenue from North Sea oil, our economy would be a lot smaller than now. Wages would be lower, unemployment higher and the cost of living higher. I suspect we would be looking enviously at our prosperous neighbours in Europe and turning out in droves to vote Yes to join the EU.

ParticipantRe: Indesit smart card software
Hotpoint engineers use a different system, which I believe comprises a hardware key connected to a laptop preloaded with all the software files required.
The smart card system was introduced specifically for independent engineers, who don’t have access to the corporate system. Prior to smart cards, Indesit issued plug-in EEPROM chips individually programmed for each model (the system still in use for machines with the first generation EVO I software).

ParticipantRe: Customer refusing to pay up despite agreement
Presumably your outlay on this job was pretty small? Do you think she is genuinely hard up? If so, as Martin suggests, issuing a county court claim may achieve nothing other than increasing your stress and the size of your loss.
Your best bet may be to leave it for now, then call round after work at the end of this month (hopefully after pay day). If you’re apologetic and friendly (rather then demanding), she may well be embarrassed into paying up (at least in part).

Nice recycling from the internet Martin. I’ve never heard such a load of tosh in my life, a mixture of half truths, irrelevances and downright lies. Take just 2 issues:
Dyson gone to Malaysia with EU loan? Dyson moved production to Malaysia to reduce costs, pure and simple. And he was pushed by NIMBY’s in the UK who saw to it that planning permission for his proposed factory in the UK was refused.
Mini produced mainly in Holland and Austria? Highly misleading. The Oxford plant is producing more MINIs than ever before. Only the Countryman is produced in Austria, a completely new model. BMW has made MINI so successful worldwide that Oxford simply can’t keep up production, so they are adding extra capacity in the Netherlands. Without the EU, there is no way BMW would have rescued Rover and there would be no MINI.

If Connect use the customer’s details for marketing purposes, they would likely be in breach of data protection regulations, as the customer will not have given informed consent to their data to be used in this way.

The EU minimum standard vat rate is 15{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}. The 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} rate was set by the coalition government to help towards reducing the deficit, so we can’t blame the EU for that.
