    Re: qualtexs public web spares,site,

ASW orders are despatched from Qualtex’s North East Depot, whereas online trade orders are generally handles by Manchester, so stock availability does vary between them.

The range of parts available from ASW seems a lot narrower than Qualtex, so I suspect they focus more on consumer volume selling lines, such as those widely advertised on Amazon, ebay, etc.

I’d agree with Don on Bosch. Electrolux Group dishwashers are usually fairly solid, although I’ve seen some entry level models with troublesome Askoll pumps. I’m pretty sure Sharp white goods are made by Vestel, slightly inferior to Beko in my experience.

    Re: Qualtex Account Closure

Well, true to their word, my Qualtex account login was barred on 3 January. Just as well I paid off my credit balance before Christmas, so I don’t need to see my online statement.

I’m a little sad to see them go after all these years, without the opportunity to say goodbye. Maybe I’ll do business with them again one day if they’d care to get in touch…

Thanks garn, that’s good and all above board. I thought for a moment you were refurbing these for sale 2nd hand, when you get into the territory of product liability, etc, which is a whole different kettle of fish.

Just a thought, garn, if you are still refurbing these for second hand sale, have you checked with Trading Standards whether you are legal to sell them without doing the full mod required by the safety alert, ie modified back and rear seal, updated drum if required, pop rivet if not, etc?

Gosh, I haven’t seen one of those failures for a few years, Martin. That surely is a particular issue that only affected the early (2004-2007?) vented dryers, before they beefed up the stiffness of the drum rear wall, broadened the front bearing pads and changed the rear drum seal to a thinner profile. I don’t think the condenser dryers were ever affected by this particular issue.

Re: Whirlpool to do a recall on Hotpoint dryers

Given the obvious safety critical issues with conventional dryers, perhaps product safety authorities should consider requiring manufacturers to recommend annual service visits(made compulsory for rental properties, as for gas appliances) or alternatively to ban them altogether, forcing manufacturers to sell heat pump dryers only (with the associated benefit of reducing carbon emissions).

To build up that much fluff in such a short time, there must have been something badly wrong with the airflow or with the way the machine was put back together during the mod. I agree many of these I go to (before mod) have a small ring of fluff inside the rear drum seal, evidence of air escaping there due to pressure inside the drum, and a few with quite a hefty chunk, but I’ve been to many of a good age with virtually none.

To see significant fluff build up in the heater box itself is a very rare occurrence indeed. The worst one I recall was a Hoover vented dryer with a rear drum seal that had split apart at the seam and become detached from the support plate.

Re: White Knight gas tumble dryer

Legally, Gas Safe registration is required for “work in relation to a gas fitting”. Reading the regulations themselves, and reading HSE and Gas Safe Register guidance I accept it is best to err on the side of caution and not to carry out any work on these dryers, without the relevant Gas Safe registration.

Re: White Knight gas tumble dryer

Thanks for the advice, but having checked out Gas Safe’s requirements, I decided to call out on a no fix no fee basis to check it out. The motor has its own separate access panel so there was no need to go anywhere near the combustion chamber. Access to the capacitor could could not have been simpler. So one fewer as new £300 appliance on the scrap heap.

    Re: Immovable Bosch/Neff dishwashers

I remember a particularly nasty customer with one of these trapped in Bosch dishwashers many years ago. She was convinced her dishwasher had failed due to water company works outside and wanted me to write a report stating this. I declined as the dishwasher simply had an internal leak. She would not take no for an answer and kept pestering me with phone calls. I think her husband was a lawyer and suspect they wanted to issue a legal claim against the water company for the thousands of pounds required to renew the 3 inch thick heated marble floor.

Re: PAT tester damages Siemens dishwasher module?

The peak voltage from standard 230V AC mains is 325V (230 x the square root of 2). From more typical 240V mains, the peak voltage is around 339V. so a standard 500V pat test does stress a component’s insulation more than experienced from normal mains voltage. The intention is to ensure the insulation can handle a significant margin above what it would experience from the normal mains supply.

eastlmark I think come up with the best theory. It is generally in remote rural areas, where mains voltage is subject to most fluctuation, that we see most cases of suppressor damage, especially the exploding type. So I suspect in this case, a weak on-board suppressor gave up the ghost when exposed to the 2 second long continuous 500V test voltage. The chances are the component would have failed at some point soon anyway.

Re: PAT tester damages Siemens dishwasher module?

The test voltage (fixed) is nominally >500V, with permissible tolerance range between 500v and 600V. I recall that on at least one occasion, I noticed a visible flash from the module housing when it tripped the rcd, but could see no evidence of PCB damage afterwards.

Re: PAT tester damages Siemens dishwasher module?

I removed the module from the machine, detached all the wiring connectors and plugged the mains cord into it – bang, the rcd tripped each time. As I said, no signs of damp on mains connector or pcb, no visible damage on the board, no hint of earth leakage showing on the insulation tester.

I can only assume a faulty component on the board was isolated from the mains terminals until connected to the ac mains supply. The odd thing is the dishwasher was working fine immediately before I did the pat test and there was no previous history of the dishwasher tripping out the rcd.
