    Re: Coop Bank failure

Is your business bank account with Co-op or do some of your rental customers bank with them?

From an electrical safety perspective, there appear to be no specific measurements in the regulations, but guidelines from some authorities.

The latest NHBC guidance (2016) has reduced the minimum recommended horizontal distance between a hob or cooker and an electrical accessory from 300mm to 100mm. This brings it into line with guidance from Electrical Safety First.

The minimum recommended horizontal distance from a sink bowl remains 300mm.

    NHBC:

    ESF (Q1.52, Q1.54):

I have found the ESF link very useful in the past for the tricky electrical wiring questions that sometimes crop up in relation to circuit protection, isolation and switching.

    Re: Brexit Stage Left…

OK for us maybe in the short term, but not for the UK economy. Rising prices feed higher inflation, in turn leading to higher interest rates, causing reductions in household disposable income and in business investment, leading to increased unemployment, increased government spending, higher taxes and lower living standards.

Just noticed Hoover have raised spare parts prices by 15{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} across the board this month. No doubt a delayed reaction to last year’s fall in the value of the pound.

Payment card processing guidelines recommend that if payment is taken with the cardholder not present, the goods should be shipped to the cardholder’s registered address. Where goods are collected in person, payment should be by chip and pin.

There is a risk with all “cardholder not present” transactions, including “click and collect”. CVV code and address verification reduce the risk but don’t prevent chargeback of fraudulent transactions to the retailer by the card issuer.

    Re: New machine dilemma !

You get what you pay for with Miele washing machines. The build quality is as solid as it always was, precision engineered with top quality materials and components throughout, including heavy gauge stainless steel tub. Although pretty decent by modern standards, the build quality of modern Bosch machines has declined steadily of the last 15-20 years, albeit not as dramatically as for their dishwashers.

Other than a weepy door seal changed under warranty at 14 months, our 14.5 year old W320 has required no maintenance, (still on its original brushes), despite pretty intensive use by our family of 5.

It shouldn’t require too much investment for the responsible authorities (or AMDEA for that matter) to create a “bible” of the 2 dozen or so tumble dryer platforms still currently in use in significant numbers to help fire investigators identify burned out remains.

Come to think of it, for a fee of £20k I’d likely be more than happy to put together a definitive guide. A tiny fraction of the cost of attaching a fire proof marking to every appliance sold.

    Re: Qualtex Account Closure

I suspect trade sales have become a pretty small part of most distributors’ turnover and profit.

Having heard reports of redundancy on this thread, I wonder if Qualtex decided to close the smaller trade accounts in order to justify laying off staff. From the gov website:

“For a redundancy to be genuine, you must demonstrate that the employee’s job will no longer exist.”

By closing down smaller trade accounts, they may have been able to demonstrate a need for fewer reps, allowing them to cut costs and increase profits.

Once the dust has settled, I wouldn’t be surprised if within the next year they launch a new non-account internet-only trade website focused on low prices. With a bit of luck it may even undercut their retail websites!

Last item on Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 today was the “Whirlpool” tumble dryer fires. Engineer from Birmingham came on and advised annual service for all tumble dryers – good advice we should be promoting in our industry I would have thought.

After paying bill for £60 at 1:30pm: Have you finished for the day now?

No, I have another four calls booked so far.

Oh, you must have a long day then (probably thinking this guy must be filthy rich – failing to appreciate the costs of running a business and the unpredictability of our workload from one day to the next).

I guess a written contract helps in situations such as these – required by Consumer Contracts legislation and impossible to enforce otherwise.

I’ve been notified of a missed call on my mobile at 04:54 this morning from a tenant whose machine I repaired on 12 January. I’m hoping it was a careless mistake rather then a genuine attempt to speak to me!

It’s a pity they don’t say how big the elipse had worn to and didn’t include a photo of the drum shaft and rear bearing. If they are talking about 2-3mm of wear, they are barking up the wrong tree, as the drum seals are more than capable of compensating for that.

Beyond that, the rear shaft would gradually cut through the rear panel, while making a horrible squealing noise, before shearing off altogether. And yes, some people do even then carry on using the dryer, ignoring the very disturbing noises the dryer makes, until the belt eventually gives up.

The fundamental difficulty the investigators have is that any evidence of poor maintenance, ie blocked filter and/or condenser, has completely turned to ash.
