Swan as in teasmade people? As I recall they were part of Moulinex Group & when they went bust they were sold. They (Swan) are a company that is now owned by Littlewoods Home Shopping. (Shop Direct Group Ltd) & I am given to understand they source their goods from various Manufacturers in the Peoples Republic of Honk Ping. (China/Far East) . I only know this because my sister has a Swan small Chest Freezer. She has had it for about 4yrs and it has never let her down. The only thing is that operational led light went off 10 days after she bought it, but it is still freezing the fish fingers.

    Hope that helps. – WQ

Oh memories, now I am showing my age. (Sigh) I used to work for Northern Electric (used to be NEEB) & indeed both were similar. I recall we used to have a Creda one, in one of the showroom windows kitted out with a kitchen unit & the machine fitted with a clear perspex panel on the front, the machine would “wash” so that customers could see the benefit of owning a dishwasher.

The Creda (was the better model & more like a small traditional type of dishwasher) rather like the Husqvarna one, the dial was on the front, whereas the Servis one was more like a solid grey box that the lid flipped upwards instead of outwards. The controls were on the top. On/Off button was behind a sealed plastic/rubbery do-dah. If memory serves me correctly, we once had a shortage of the Servis ones & instead had a batch that were branded Homark but they were the same machine & made in Italy. – I also recall the Servis one’s used to leak terribly, because on the bottom of the machine on the plastic bit was a metal skirt, it used to corrode & rust badly. We had many a Servis machine returned.

    I feel old now.

No doubt we’ll be sued or something for not being politically correct, from both sides of the fence. 😉

If people want to use small dishwashers I can’t see the problem, personally I wouldn’t as to do that amount of dishes I fail to see the point of the expense really.

WG have you got a 1000mm kitchen base unit as the 45cm dishwashers were introduced to fit into the half of that which doesn’t have the sink and plumbing in it? That’s a far better bet if it can be done IMO.

    K.

ROFLMAO, well you won’t get sued from me I promise. I like a good laugh & bless Martin’s little Cotton Socks, he’s been a good sport in the battle of the sexes v compact dishwashers.

I haven’t got the room Kwatt, in all seriousness I am trying to decide if we should redo the kitchen or move. (We are a 1 bedroom bungalow)

I have looked at a few properties from apartments to 3 bed houses, it’s just the cost is rocketing rapidly. As I recall one apartment I looked at (New Build) had a ghastly Candy 3 in one do-dah that you kindly advised me about in a separate post. When I moved into this bungalow, I had to take it quickly as I needed to be based back in town because of my hubby’s kidney failure. I needed to be near our local renal unit and so chose the place & rapidly downsized. (Our old place was a huge 2 bed new build & was perfect but out in the sticks miles from civilisation & hospital)

Still for now we have to make do with our shoe box. – WQ

If we had the space, we’d fit a full size machine, but as we haven’t, we have to make do. Anyway, mostly there’s just the two of us and whilst I can’t deny the health benefits of twirling a washing brush round a sink, I’d rather use the time to get my exercise in other ways.
(Still trying to find a Zanussi to have a look at – only the Bosch seems to be on display)

Take it from me Hon, buy the machine. It will be the best £279 you spend. Ok so if you have a heavy meal session, you may need to do 2 loads. – Big deal, think of the time you will save not having to do the washing up. You can chill & drink a bottle of wine instead whilst the machine does the work.

Trust me, your hands will thank you for it in the long term.

Ye Gods, I despair quite frankly to the degree that I am blowing a fuse right now!!!!!

Tell me, do you have a Washing Machine in your household, or is your other half expected to go down to the local river with washboard, grater & bar of Fairy Soap? This is 2007 not 1807 Martin!

Honestly, typical male attitude to washing up, I wouldn’t ruddy care but after you males expect us females to ruddy well cook you up a half dinasour for dinner, you then p off from the kitchen as fast as you like, leaving us females to do the “little woman thing” and wash the sodding dishes. – Well my hands in my household DON’T do dishes, that’s what the compact dishwasher is for.

And now I am off to burn my bra. 👿

Nothing wrong with small at all there WQ, small is good, so don’t clutter it up with a little, less than useless tin box. Sink – washing-up bowl – squirt of Fairy Liquid, splash around a few dishes and leave to dry. Easy, quick and eco-friendly and the exercise is good for us all after all said and done! 🙂

    Actually Martin… 😉

It has been proven that using a dishwasher uses less water than washing by hand and this is a pretty well documented fact. It also does a better job and is more hygienic.

But in any event, I’d still recommend the Bosch machine although the Zanussi isn’t bad really on the whole.

The Haier will die, it’s only a question of when WQ, but heh ho, lap it up while it keeps working as it save it going to landfill (where it belongs IMO ).

The Matsui is another Chinese flavoured machine at that price, possibly a Naiko in a dress, which is worse than Haier in some ways.. 😉

    K.

Naiko? Who on earth are they? – Never heard of them I am afraid.

I wonder if we should open a “book” & take bets as to when the Haier may die? 😀

clr0901 wrote:Thanks for comments re Zanussi. I haven’t been able to find one to have a look at yet. All I can find are the baby Bosch models but they are 4 place settings whereas the Zanussi is 6.
Also the Zanussi is virtually full width so I could use it under the worktop and put a drawer or cupboard underneath.
Any idea where I might be able to get to see a compact Zanussi (in Surrey/West Sussex)?

Oh Gosh! Now given that I am up North & your down South, I am a bit stuck on that one. If you go to http://www.zanussi-electrolux.co.uk/node142.aspx & put your address details in, it will direct you to your nearest supplier.

PS…..I strongly advise if you buy the machine (good machine IMO) that you buy an extended warranty either via the shop or via DOMGEN or Warranty Direct. Saves the heartache if your machine is either a Monday Morning or Friday Night one. – BEST OF LUCK!

Tut Tut Martin! I am suprised at you scoffing at us mere mortals that are spacially challenged. LOL! Go in to the corner at once & write out 100 times
    “Small is Beautiful”

Joking apart, even though these machines are small they do a good job AND wash as well as a larger machine. In fairness to the Zannusi (assuming I had a Monday Morning or Friday night machine) it used to take quite a lot of dishes (Sunday Lunchtime) & then do a second run with the pans & wash after wash (when it was working) they always came out pristine.

Re: Compact dishwashers – any experience?

Indeed I have similar problem as my bungalow is rather small.

I had a Zannusi Studio (bought from Comet) a couple of years ago – 6place settings in white. (£279) I bought the matching tumble dryer at the same time which was £319. – Both are now sadly scrapped!!! (2 and half yrs on)

The dishwasher in it’s defence when it worked was fine, it washed and dried very well, but after the first month of ownership the Electronic Control Board failed and Zannussi refused to come out citing that as it was bought from Comet, they had to repair. The long and the short of it was that it was out of action for a month as they had to source a new board & heating element, as apparently when the board blew, it blew the element. Towards the last 6 months of it’s life, the front panel on the door cracked and needed a bit of duct tape put over it, but it didn’t effect the machines safe working. Eventually the board went again and it was beyond economical repair in my view. – Then the following week the dryer too went off. – Cheaper to get rid.

Now at the moment (ashamed to say this……you may whip me Kwatt) I have a Haier Compact one, that sits on my bench. (It’s about 6yr old beige plastic one, that looks like a space ship as the top opens up. I bought that off a friend for £25 as she was selling her stuff & touch wood its worked ok in the 6months I have had it, but if it was to ever break down (Being Haier……..it will no doubt) I have set aside some money to buy me the Bosh one from Currys at £279. – I have seen the £109 Matsui (or should that be Matpooey one) in Currys, but in all honesty think it would be false economy to buy it. Looking at Revooo’s site, a lot of other people think same.

Better off with the Bosh I think. – WQ

    Re: VAX Cyclonic Upright Vacuum

    Hello Everyone,

Sorry it’s been a while since I last checked in. Hope all are well.

If I may stick my 2p’s worth in, I would avoid Miele Cylinder’s at all costs. I had a Cat & Dog Miele cylinder bought for me as a gift a couple of years ago. Initially, I was very pleased with, but as time went on (6months) I found I was paying out a fortune for replacement Carbon Filter & it used special material bags that were only available from Miele and they were expensive. As time went on, I found the machine was quite poor at picking up the dog hair, despite it having a motorised brush head. – I gave it away to a neighbour who was desperate for a vac.

At Northumbrian Water, where I used to clean the offices I used to use a Sebo & a Numatic Henry Hoover (depending on which side of the offices I was assigned that week to clean) & both were very good at picking up and cleaning all sorts of much, including large volumes of dried in mud from the geology labs.

One thing I have noticed, whenever I am at my local tip, getting rid of the privet cuttings, there are a large number of Oreck machines waiting to be recycled. – So i guess Orkeck are not upto scratch either.

    Simply Perfect

Well since I last posted my Miele was delivered & installed & is perfect. I am very impressed & it is so so quiet. – I eventually received my cheque from the Warranty Plan Company & so all is well. (Just got to pay for the Miele now!!!!)

Still hunting for a new cooker though, but given that I am thinking of re-modelling the kitchen, I may opt for some built in, even though I hate the idea. (much prefer freestanding)

Hope you are all well & thanks to all for their advice & assistance.

    The Deed is Done

Well I have gone and bought my new machine but changed my mind at the very last moment after reading Kwatts last post, which gave me food for thought. (Thank you Kwatt)

I went for a Miele Prestige Plus from John Lewis’s for £549. (Got a very nice interest free deal) There is a two yr guarantee that is on promotion to extend to 5yrs via some redemption voucher & then after 5yrs my household domestic appliance plan should cover it after that for a further 3yrs until it is 8yrs. By that time, I would consider I have had my monies worth. So (fingers crossed) peace of mind for the next 8yrs & it’s being installed on Monday Morning.

And now I am off for a Curry, I am ravenous.

    Update

Can I just say I am not anti-Beko to the knickers in a knot brigade who seem hell bent in trying to convert me to the joys of Bekoland.

I have always said it is horses for courses, you buy what you like, what works for you, what ever is within your means. Personally speaking, it’s just I have heard a lot of bad reports about their washers & cookers. Fridges/Freezers No Probs, as same with their Tv’s . I don’t want to go down the road of having something for a year and bang, back to square one again. I have a family member who is ill with Chronic Renal Failure & so I rely very much on my washer when there are little accidents, shall we say.

The update with the insurers is that they are prepared to offer £105 in full & final settlement instead of the Beko, so I have accepted this and should have the cheque by the end of next week.

I have had a real problem trying to get hold of & source an ISE up here in Newcastle upon Tyne. Plenty of people offering to fix one but no people wanting to sell one. I have rang around a large number of local independents all to no avail, so I am going back to John Lewis’s in the morning & I am gonna purchase their own branded machine that is German Engineered. I am gonna extend the warranty to 5yrs and fingers crossed it should be in situ as soon as.

And now, I am off to bed. It has been a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng day.
