ParticipantRe: Opinion on Large Microwave Combi Ovens?
I have a large Tesco Combination Microwave & Oven & grill (Non Built in) which I bought a few years ago in their sale for £39. Although it mostly just gets used as a microwave, I have baked with it, & use it as a third oven when I go into baking mode. You can have Oven only, Oven/Micro, Grill, Grill/Micro, or just micro on its own.
I have managed to cook a joint of pork in combi mode in around 18 mins. Crackling wasn’t as good as a normal oven but all the same the pork was cooked through. I have also used it to do pizza & bacon sarnies & have also used it to bake a sponge cake in combi mode and that was 4 mins.
Keeping it clean, can be a pain but obviously if you can afford a better make than mine, you will probably get a better result. – Go for it says I.
One thing I would advise, Keep clear of the LG SolarDom Light Oven, which is a mixture of Halogen & Microwave. It cost my sister £500 at Comet when it first came out, and it is pure rubbish!!!

Half the time it doesn’t cook things properly, making them charred on the outside and pink in the inside.

Oven Pride is very good, a bit expensive at around £4 but well worth it! Please follow all instructions and use Rubber Gloves!!!!. http://www.pride-range.com/ovenpride.html

PS, When you put your racks into the bag & put solution on, after a while it can smell rather farty, but it does work!

Before anyone resorts to Court, I would always advise a letter to both parties respective Executive Offices, ( Retailer & Manuf) Court should only be considered if an agreement can’t be reached. I forgot to mention that a copy of the photos of the state of the drum enclosed with the letters may also help.
I have no experience of Crosslee Plc other than the fact they are a well established and respected brand & have a very good name to protect.
I can only document my experience with Samsung. The first was many years ago (about 10) over a bench top dishwasher, when the sealed in resin control panel broke down and could not be replaced. Even though the machine was 3yr old, I wrote to Samsung UK’s MD & bless him, he upon the condition that I returned the data plate from the machine i.e. serial number etc, refunded my money paid for the item in full. If memory serves me correctly I bought it from the Coop for £100.
Last year I had a problem with my Samsung microwave (paint peeling inside) and although out of warranty by 2 months, they delivered me a new & better one via Courier with profound apologies & a very nice letter advising that they expected their products to last longer than the Guarantee Period.
So again, nothing ventured, nothing gained!
I do agree with you Kwatt that in view of the cost of the dryer £100? that it probably is not that cost efficient in time and effort to pursue this matter via the courts especially if it is going to cost £50 to issue a summons. If you are Fee Exempt then ok, I suppose why not give it a go?

I hear what you say Kwatt, but I am going to politely disagree with you on this occasion. I have always found that a polite letter to the Executive Office can work wonders. 🙂 where as a letter to a Customer Service Desk usually gets binned. 🙁
If the person in question complains to the Retailer about the dryer, it is most likely that she will be passed back to Crosslee Plc anyway, as most firms will try and pass the buck back to the Manufacturer. It is my considered opinion that she may get a better result by contacting Crosslee Plc. At the very least they may agree to fix the dryer on a free of chrge basis. – Nothing ventured, Nothing Gained, or Shy Bairns Get Now’t.
As for Court well, I see that (Robertshaw V Currys) set a precedent & that my guess it that most firms will back off if they think they are going to end up in the Small Claims Court.

I would agree with Penguin that it is time to speak to your local trading standards people. They have the clout to look at this and if necessary prosecute the firm that sold you the machine as an “A Grade” machine when in fact it is a “B Grade”.
Again, on the lines of my earlier post to another thread, I would write by Recorded Delivery Mail to the place where you originally bought the machine from. Write to the MD, and also write to Executive/MD Office at Hotpoint/Merloni Group Head Office. Tell them that unless this matter is sorted out once and for all, you will pursue them further via Trading Standards, BBC Watchdog Program and the Small Claims Court. (If you are on a low income/benefits you can claim exemption from the court fees)

I am gonna put my legal hat on here, just because it is out of Warranty does not mean that are left high & dry. According to Consumer Direct, I quote
“You will probably get quicker and better results by complaining to whoever sold you the faulty goods. Remember, your contract was with them and they are liable – not the manufacturer. But if you do decide to claim under the manufacturer’s guarantee, perhaps because it’s more convenient for you, tell the manufacturer that you’re ‘reserving your rights under the Sale of Goods Act’.
Don’t listen to the seller if he tells you that he can do nothing for you because the guarantee has run out. Goods should do what they are supposed to for a reasonable length of time. The time set by the guarantee is not necessarily reasonable. For example, the control panel on a microwave or the gearbox in a car should last for more than twelve months even though their guarantees only lasted a year.”
I think it is fair to argue with White Knight that the product should be expected to last more than 13 months. I would say at the very least the product should give 5yrs life. I would place this in writing to them, write to
The Managing Director’s Office/Executive Office,
Crosslee Plc T/A White Knight Ltd.
Hipperholme,
Halifax,
West Yorkshire
England
HX3 8DEIf you have access to a fax, fax your letter across to 01442 206304(as well as post, recorded delivery) (remember to keep a copy of all correspondence for your records)
In Finality, if that doesn’t produce the goods in the respect that White Knight will not assist you further, you can always issue a claim via The Small Claims Court via HM Court Service Website. If you are on a low income/benefits you can claim full exemption from the Court Fees & issue a claim against Crosslee Plc. My guess is that rather than fight the case, they would try and reach a settlement with you. But before you cross that bridge try writing to them first. Don’t bother phoning them, it is a waste of time, and at least if you write c/o the Executive Office, you may get someone who may be sympathetic to your plight and you never know either fix or replace the dryer as a gesture of goodwill.
Keep us posted!!!

ParticipantRe: Budget Whirlpool
I couldn’t agree more with your post Kwatt. It saddens me that in everything in life now, quality is just not there & everything appears to be built to the “cost conscious buyer market”. I am quite heavy with my washing machine usage because I have a disabled husband & my machine is on most days dealing with bedding etc, I suppose if it was to breakdown tomorrow (touching head….I mean wood) it wouldn’t owe me anything, but as to whether or not I would replace it like for like, the jury is still out on that one!
On a separate note, I visited RENEW in Gateshead recently which is a project that deals in recycling older appliances by reconditioning them and selling them with a 6 month warranty. I was amazed at the sheer volume in their showroom of machines especially these Direct Drive LG/Samsung things & the amount of Hotpoints!!!! – They were selling them from £75 to £135. I managed to source a second dryer for the house, (electra dryer for £40) which beats the creda looking model in tesco for £109.
Have a good day Kwatt, I off to town now to pay my water bill. 🙁

Kwatt, Forgive my ignorance here but I wanted to ask, if the ISE10 is made by Asko? According to Asko’s web site they are owned by Antonio Merloni, are they the same mularchy that own the Merl-Tin-Pot company that is responsible for my shoddy Creda Cooker?
Confused?

ParticipantRe: Agree with FayGamo
I am afraid I am in agreeance with FayGamo, one can only go off one’s personal experiences in life with particular items & research shows if you like a product you will recommend it and be loyal to the brand, but if you have a bad experience you will tell others to avoid like the plague!
Now Zanussi may well “build” a better machine than the Merl-tin-pot corporation lot but their UK service (Zanussi) leaves a lot to be desired especially given their playance on the fact that they are part of the Electrolux Group. When you think of the Lux Factor you automatically think quality/prestige & that one is in safe hands, given the heritage of the brand, the sad reality is they don’t give a crap, & try and turn the issue back on you blaming you the customer, i.e. “you must have done something to our machine to make it break down.
I know from my own bitter experience that I had to scrap 2 machines (one a condenser dryer & compact dishwasher) that were both 2.5yrs old because of appalling levels of breakdown and shoddy service & workmanship from Comet & Service Force. Not to mention the umpteen calls to Zanussi’s Head Office & Letters to the MD.
If you can afford a new machine, buy one, cut your losses & whilst I now own Whirlpool appliances (apart from me cooker) and am very happy with them, if you don’t like Whirly’s buy a good German Made make.
