I agree with the sentiment, but I wouldn’t turn work down on such a principle even if it is admirable. Can you imagine Curry’s showing a customer the door if a customer had been to Comet first? I know it’s different in the sense that the “other†engineer has apparently been “used†but a sales person at Comet may have been “used” too .
We shouldn’t necessarily assume that the guy didn’t get paid a call out for his visit. And if not, that’s surely the risk involved in giving free estimates. Also, the other guy could be a cowboy, or could have quoted an extortionate price and therefore doesn’t deserve the business. They may have fully intended to have the first guy fix the machine but didn’t get on with or like the engineer or maybe just didn’t trust them.
Having said that, I would certainly be cautious of customers who’ve had someone else out, and their diagnosis. But I would quote them, and explain how much it would cost if you subsequently found it wasn’t the motor and they didn’t accept the true repair cost.

And, you have to omit the forward slash from your account number when logging in.

ParticipantRe: Is it just me….
LOL. No, it was a mini washing machine, so-named because the average houswife could hop-over it. It was withdrawn after several women got their tights snagged on the soap dispenser drawer.

I once called with a colleague to fix an A3110 Hopover when drum bearings were failing in droves. Opened the door, spun the dum – very noisy rumble. Quoted customer, went to van to get bearings while colleague started stripping machine.
45 min’s later we’d replaced drum bearings and reassembled machine. Colleague puts belt on and spins drum … exactly same noise as before. ’twas the motor bearings failed.

This is because if you want one, they have to send a man over to Germany to collect it. 😕

I know, the lack of a fault code has thrown me. I asked the customer to leave the machine on as long as possible in the hope that it brings up a code but after 3 to 4 hours she descided she didn’t want the expence of the electricity!
Keith.
She’d rather spend the money on an engineers time 😕
It reminds me of how frustrated I get when some customers virtually refuse to provide any washing so I can test for a fault because they’ve not got any that needs washing and don’t want the inconvenience of wetting clean laundry. They’d presumably rather have the inconvenience of a second visit because the fault can’t be found without a load in. !andy_art_trigg
ParticipantRe: Hotpoint Tub top weight fixings – beware
I am certain a torque wrench wouldn’t have helped here as it hadn’t even reached the nipping up stage and I only used a quarter inch socket set with handle about 6 inches to I have to put effort in to get any real leverage. A torque wrench would be nice though.

I think it’s a fault, I suspect the plastic just isn’t strong enough. The problem with grease is that the bolts come loose, greasing would possibly make it more likely. The problem is basically down to the unworkable idea of screwing bolts that hold a fair bit of weight into plastic. They need to use metal inserts to screw into.

How long ago was that Martin? It’s virtually a months holiday a year plus bank holidays – and sick pay – and pension, private use of vehicle, bupa, discount card, share options etc 😉

ParticipantRe: HELP fridge freezer problem
I’ve had loads of these Proline’s all with same fault, compressor running continuously and very hot. Clearly not pumping any gas round and no cooling taking place. Suspect system leaks. They are usually exchanged. I’ve heard that several have had compressors fitted and either didn’t cure or same thing happened again.

Yes, these tubs can leak from the spot welding round the motor brackets. I’ve also had one leaking from the seam under the bracket on the top of the tub.

ParticipantRe: samsung srs2026cvw american style f/f
It does a self check and indicates any faults by flashing part of one of the 0’s – the code can then be looked up.

ParticipantRe: samsung srs2026cvw american style f/f
I’ve had loads of these too with no apparent cause. If a sensor fails, aren’t they supposed to report it as an error code by flashing on the display?

ParticipantRe: Is WashVac’s site down?
Am I doing something wrong or missing something obvious? The new Wash Vac site is totally unusable to me. Before, if I entered a model number I could view all the parts held for that machine and find what I want.
Now, every model number I enter just brings up no results. Is this deliberate maybe? To only allow people with part numbers to find stuff?
Here are just a few models I tried where there are apparently no parts stocked which I don’t believe.
hoover ac272 (instruction book only)
hotpoint 9520 No parts
hotpoint WM62 No parts
Indesit WIL143suk No Parts
Hotpoint wf220 No partsAs it currently stands it’s useless to me.
