I’d suggest you try your local library for a “haynes” repair manual…IIRC, this covers washers ,vacs etc. -but only in a general operating principles sense.
Ultimately, yes, your solenoid will have one side “earthy” (more correctly,it’ll be Neutral and the other will have 230 on it…..the switching from the controller, pressure-switch etc. will be series when it has power on it BUT…it’s not necessarily the LINE that’s switched 😯 This is why it’s important you understand the fundamentals!
Unplug machine, disconnect solenoid coil and do a simple continuity check on it,-if your machine has more than one solenoid, just compare the coil resistances.
I’d *guess* about 1.5K as a rough figure.I don’t think it’s wise to direct you further, other than to suggest using the Forum’s “find an engineer” link.

ParticipantRe: Scandinova FF 7054D fridge freezer thermometer
And the expert has already given you the diagnosis, above 😀
From his knowledgeable reply, it would seem the ‘stat and thermometer are ,effectively , the same unit…(the thermometer is not a standalone function)
I’d be checking that first, assuming you have done the obvious, like checking the plugtop-fuse.
regarding cost/price how much a year ,does the cost equate to? use that to judge how much is an economical repair….many half-decent fridges will do 15-20years on the compressor, 30 isn’t unheard of….so it’s probable that another 5 years life could be had for under £100…sounds a good gamble to me .
If you don’t feel competent to go this far, I’d use someone from the “engineer”contact-list, here.
these guys are obviously concientious and proud of their work…..you can be pretty certain they won’t scam or con you. 🙂

ParticipantRe: Daewoo FR-631ND leaking water into bottom of fridge
Not sure if I’m reading you right, but is the problem that the puddle of water is reappearing?
If so, I’d guess you are looking for a blocked drain hole/pipe…..when the evaporator (“radiator” ) inside the cabinet, defrosts, the melted ice has to go somewhere….normally it’s led outside the cabinet to a collector-tray where it can evaporate. (sometimes this is a “pan” on top of the compressor and the water helps cool it.)I may be way off-beam, here, but there it is.

ParticipantRe: Scandinova FF 7054D fridge freezer thermometer
OK, let’s see…..The fridge section has stopped working and the thermometer reads -30 degrees with power on or off.
the fridge is not cooling?…it gets to room temperature? it runs all the tome it’s plugged in? It doesn’t run at all when plugged in?the thermometer is PERMANENTLY reading -30 even when unplugged? and it doesn’t change the reading, although the fridge temperature alters?
Sorry, your post just didn’t make any sense at all, explain the problem and symptoms clearly and fully.
Lastly, do you really mean “thermometer” and not “thermostat”
I’m sure you’ll get a helpful reply , once someone can understand the question!

to clear blockages from the pump and then replace the pump, but there has been no change.
If this is what happened AFTER you had explained that the machine took in water intermittently at the END of the cycle…..then you were conned by a dishonest or incompetent repairer….but that DOES DEPEND on just how clear and explicit a description you gave.
Unfortunately, the average engineer is not clairvoyant…so he needs a clear and FULL description of the fault in order to make an accurate diagnosis,
As Phildom described, the water is let in by a device which is an “electrically operated tap”………the end of the drain -hose HAS to be above the highest water level the machine will get….so, you need a pump to “SUCK” the water OUT of the machine and push it UP the waste-pipe and over the “shepherd’s crook” at the top.
The pump CANNOT pump water into the machine….if you tip out a bowl of water into the sink, it goes down the plughole…it doesn’t jump back into the taps….exactly the same with a washer.
mains pressure pushes in fresh water…a pump sucks out the dirty (blockages excepted!)
Use the forum enquiry or the engineer locator at the bottom, if you need assistance.
these people are ethical and knowledgeable It’s false economy to take “pot luck” on a local who could possibly be a “cowboy”

If the solenoid is powering, I’d expect to hear a pronounced “click” followed by a mains-frequency hum ,as long as the valve is held open.
Have you checked the wiring circuit TO and FROM the valve…..you could well have a loose or corroded connection there somewhere.
REMEMBER TO UNPLUG FIRST !!!! WATER AND ELECTRICITY DO NOT MIX WITH INQUISITIVE FINGERS.cockney steve
ParticipantRe: hoover 262 upright.
Well, thanks for your reply, Penguin (Linux?)
I’ve been anguishing over this matter for some days, now.
It’s not a GENUINE part!…It appears to be a totally different style to the original and doesn’t appear to shroud the switch. But that apart, I have grave concerns that it won’t be as durable as the original, genuine item.
the original has done over 50 years and i’d hoped to fit replacement which will last as long.
I’ve read a lot about some of these cheap inferior knockoff copies (though I’m not saying this is one of that kind) and i’d hate to get ripped off.I don’t use the Hoover too often, nowadays, but it ran fine last time I tried it , about 5 years ago….maybe I should just retire it to the status of “cupboard queen” ?

Although this is a long (and old) thread, I would like to suggest the following.
Find a local sign/graphics shop who make vinyl signs and lettering.
they should be able to make facsimilies of the originals (assuming you can get a picture from one of the posters who bought a new fascia.)
They will also be able to do a clear vinyl overlay to cover the print-area….the finished job would be far more durable than the original stencil and would be a lot cheaper…..the vinyl is cut on a laser-plotter connected to a PC….cheap, quick and effective.
the vinyl comes in 3-year and 10 -year qualities….but that is for shop and vehicle signs exposed to sun and elements…would last better indoors, I think.
Suggestion 2….good stationers, -dry transfer lettters/numerals.
clean the work (meths is good) lay transfer sheet with required item in correct position,..scribble over it with a ball-pen and the item transfers.
you need to lacquer it after as they just rub off otherwise.

ParticipantRe: Miele belt squeak
Hello, Mr. aqulectric, (you’re a Steve too! so you must be a good bloke 😆
I’m sorry if I offended you, but let me explain..
Brian paid a lot of money for what is probably considered the”Rolls Royce” of washers. so he squealed like a stuck pig (or should that be ,”a slipping belt” 🙂 ) when it needed looking at for a bit of adjustment or a belt change……..sorry i’m going off again…….Just because you paid 1/4 Mill. for a Rolls, doesn’t mean it lasts forever! au contraire!….they need a service every 6,000 just like any other car…except, like miele, the service charge is commensurate with the price of the machine
£500 for a short service £700 the medium and £1000 for the biggie.(ballpark figures, parts extra.)
Now, that to me, is getting yourself “stitched-up” -lose about 200 a week in depreciation and about 15 p a mile in servicing costs.
I’m not saying that Miele OR Rolls-Royce are ripoffs…they just are a “bit “extravagant for the ordinary guy. likewise, a lot of people find the cheap £200 washer to be false economy, just like buying a Lada was.To use the Rolls analogy again…..one every 30 years, or 6 horrible Ladas in the same period.
Mr Brian has a lot of money in his machine…Is it good value? only Mrs Brian knows that one.
looking at Miele spares prices and their “closed shop” strategy, then comparing that with the ISE proposition….well, I ‘m pretty sure where I’d plonk my money.
Mr. Brian ,I’m sure won’t be offended, he’s a man of the world 😉I think you must have misunderstood …”smutty” indeed .
I suppose I could have suggested more clearly that Mrs brian must be really attractive, like a Bunny-Girl (perhaps you are too young to remember them?)
Erm, and it wasn’t me who was crowing about his bedroom olympics 😳

ParticipantRe: Miele belt squeak
Hey, Mr. aqualectric,- stop rubbing it in.-I already told the poor beggar that with the wedge he’s blown on that there miele, he could have had an ISE 10 then with the change he could hav got an ISE5 as well.
anyway, cos he’s been playing rabbits, they would probably classify his tribe’s laundry as “light commercial” (you ever felt wet nappies? “light” my a55)….so he’d only get 5 year warranty…..but the parts after that would be a lot cheaper than the Miele and he would still have a nice shiny”5″ in reserve.
Well we all know about a fool and his money, don’t we.
Mr Penguin had a word with Brian cos he was screaming about his squealing belt…(we cured the squeal though, hey, Brian 😀 )
Brian’s keeping very quiet-maybe his missis was very grateful for him testing the smoke alarms, doing the washing and cleaning the bath. OTOH, he may have supped too much of that special offer Bells I told him about. – Or, he could be a bit embarassed cos you and I know he’s got himself stitched up like a kipper.
I am really pleased I could help him out.

ParticipantRe: Miele belt squeak
Hey, Brian, I thought it would be a help to let you know about the cheap Bells
If you hadn’t swilled so much, you’d have seen where I said a BIT of WD….not half a jumbo-size tin of it :rolls: …..anyway, bet it proved your smoke alarms work OK….your missis will be very grateful for that – and no doubt later on you’ll be dumping her another load
of washing in the bath.talking of which, easy peasy 😉 get your wellies and a clothespeg
don’t forget to take the velcro off the inside-legs of the wellies (unless you keep a smart pair for public-wear ) clothes peg on nose’quick plod round the bath of nappies….pull plug….snifter of Bells (clothespegs don’t work that well) refit plug, fill. repeat a couple of times.
RESULT….happy wife clean wellies..clean bath …clean nappies. warm mellow feeling. 😆
I did tell you it would stop the squealing i was right, wasn’t I?
Bad news…The slipper length company has been bought out by a big Washer company and the nevva nevva ware belt has been took off the market
you missed your chance there!…now you’ll just have to keep getting stitched into those genuine parts that the nice miele man brings
as a matter of idle interest….do any of your kids like wearing overalls?

Sooo Its now wrong for a man to have his nuptuals more than 2.3 times in his lifetime now.. Mad
no, not at all..may I suggest you nip into the barber shop (no need to wait for a haircut) just ask him for “something for the weekend” Wink the small charge will save you a fortune, trust me.
Your just jealus cos me an Mrs R have a generous night time. Surprised
Ha Ha…My dear friend Mrs palm , is very acomodating and doesn’t saddle me with 14 sprogs or a mountain of washing!
Did king henry have this problem with all his kids and wives..No so why should I Question
‘Cos he had servants and didn’t have to fork out £1400 for a washer Razz besides, he was a king and you’re not-my ex once told me I was a four king idol but she didn’t say which ones worshiped me.
It still doesnt state that its only to be used for a family of 2.3 children and this machine wasnt built in china or for the chinese market. Mad
obviously you HAVE been at the Bells ,otherwise you’d work out that you don’t really get .3 of a kid unless you’re a Whitehall pen-pusher .
2.3 kids and 2 parents (ok, I know that 2 parents together is a bit unusual nowadays)..is 4.3 people’s washing a chinese family is only 3 people cos they’re allowed only 1 kid per couple.Anyway, Mr Penguin (I like the milk chocolate ones) told you that 5 loads a week is average -It sounds like your missus has been getting a lot more than that , with 12 kids and 2 in the oven.
you’re running a private launderette there Idea put a coin-op one in and you will be a rich man in no time Cool 🙂cockney steve
ParticipantRe: Miele belt squeak
Bryan…it seems we had crossed wires…..my goodness!..it wasn’t the bells that got you in a fix…sounds more like the bell end!
Stroll on! 12 kids and increasing!….have you thought that poor little overworked miele may not actually have been made to do a huge amount like that?
Chris was quite right!- If you’d bought your washer in a part of the world where big families are the norm (well, more like small communities, than big families)
you would have got a jocking great thing like a 50 gallon oil drum.Be thankful you didn’t buy a Chinese made one!….They are only allowed one kid, so washers are made for 3 people’s laundry….and China is nearer the equator than us, so they only need flimsy light clothes….see how long one of them lasts doing umpteen sets of harris tweed underpants every week !
get the miele man in……for a quick bodge you could spray some WD40 on the belt. It won’t stop it slipping, but you won’t hear it squealing.

At the risk of being moderated, im posting
Kimand, you’re really out of your depth here…I’ve run a fish and chip business for several years, as well as having an electrical/electronics/mechanical engineering background (and, yes, i’m multi-talented in the building trades too, including plastering!
you really should visit your local library and get an elementary study-book out on your chosen subject.
Refrigeration isn’t rocket-science, neither is AC motor technology.
The fridge compressor is a sealed unit…the gas is compressed till it liquifys…the liquid goes to the bit inside the fridge….turns back to gas, cooling the fridge in the process.
It does not , of itself, “blow up”or “explode”Your “magic cord” is not “magic” at all it could kill you
If not from your ignorant fiddling with 240V….then food-poisoning or botulism.
K watt has already told you:-
FOOD NEEDS A STABLE TEMPERATURE at around 5 or6*
LISTEN TO GOOD ADVICE!
if you had been systematic with your “playing” you would have found out exactly what the “klixon” device was, what it did, and probably deduced why it failed……you would also realised the function of the capacitor and the operation of the start-circuit. the Cap is not there for decoration! if it’s dud..REPLACE IT! likewise the Klixon!messing with switching start/run windings manually is a recipe for disaster.
HINT…you can SEARCH on the internet.I would suggest you use the function at the bottom of the page to locate an engineer.
Fiddling and bodging is not an option for you so DO NOT begrudge paying another engineer for his professional opinion.
Sorry, I had a strop on behalf of the forum owners…..it tees me off when someone tries to help and the enquirer ignores advice or is too lazy to learn the basics of self-help first.
IMO you should steer well clear of this American bodge…fire risk/shock/injury risk/food poisoning risk..pay a proper repairer OR learn “how it works” before fiddling further.
