ModeratorRe: Smelly Washers
Got to recommend the training, been doing this job for 15years and me and the missus both learned how to both wash the washing and internally clean the machine. Seems I’ve been giving some rare advice to my customers for the last 14years 11months and 3 weeks. Never mind, at least I can justify new boxers after she (sorry Kevin) realised why the elastic was showing after two washes!!!

Answer – Freezer evaporator should get very cold -25C ish. If you stick your ear to outside of cabinet you should hear the refrigerant passing through the pipes. I would guess you are correct in that the compressor is suspect or else it has lost all its refrigerant. You would need to put a line-tap valve on and a set of guages to be sure. Good luck – Ian.

ModeratorRe: Domestic & General Exchanges
It seems to always hit the fan at once doesn’t it. By coincedence, I had a chat with Graham at D&G (who’s coming to the UKW meeting by the way) yesterday. I explained that we were, as a 1st teir agent, getting stitched up by both the manufacturer (on spare prices – K you can guess who) and D&G by not being able to repair a product within their limit. Adding insult to injury, they then sent the customer a voucher to go to Comet and replace the appliance. So we only get half payment for the call and subsequently lose any further chance of a repair on a new appliance. I further explained that D&G seemed less interested in looking after its own network and more concerned with keeping others sweet. Now an interesting point, we sell more washers every year than we get D&G calls and most come with a D&G card inside. What incentive do we have to let the cards reach the customer? Actually none – because if we leave the card out, the customer comes our way and if we leave it in they may go to Comet. As Graham said during our conversation, we (ie Me) have to make a commercial decision – bit of a no-brainer really

Simon – Fit this one 5EPJ 1220 ie 1220 elasticated. Don’t fit the 1230 belt

ModeratorRe: Fridge door seal – fitting advice wanted.
Be aware thought that some manufacturers such as Servis, Fridgidaire and Gorenje are now manufacturing doors with removeable seals. In the case of Servis the original door was fitted with a none replaceable seal but the supplied part comes as a door frame with a seal that fits into a slot.

ModeratorRe: Repair referals
I don’t have a problem with this – However, the customer must be advised that all part guarantees (ie recovery of monies for their supplied part) is down to them, obviously subject to us fitting part correctly. Also they may incur extra costs for us having to rectify any misfitted items. To be honest, I guess a good may of us, arrive to find the appliance in the middle of the kitchen with the back/top off. At the end of it, you can just walk away from the job, after telling the customer why.

Or a Gorenje with two year parts and labour guarantee.

ModeratorRe: Hotpoint FFA90 frost free
Obvious question here – why didn’t the engineer regas the appliance whilst he was there? Not sure what area you are in, but we would charge about £50 for a regas in Lincolnshire

Just as a quick thought – consider Gorenje, better than average quality, they make all their own products (only ovens are bought in) and they come with a two year parts AND labour guarantee. Worth a look.

ModeratorRe: hotpoint mistral ff91sr (what next)
OK lets try and sort this one for you. Suck eggs with me a moment. The fridge freezer works like this. From a warm start the compressor passes refrigerant into the evaporator which is located in the freezer compartment – the evaporator then cools down. There are three thermistors – two in the evaporator area and one in the fridge baffle housing. All three should show 31K at room temperature. The two in the freezer evaporator area are usually the ones you have problems with (yellow and green plugs). When the evaporator gets to -5C (and not before unless in test mode) the fan in the freezer comes on and cold air is forced around the freezer compartment and also up a tube at the left hand side of the evaporator, into the baffle housing, where (subject to the baffle flap being open) it circulates around the fridge and then is drawn down the right hand side tube back down into the freezer area. If either of these tubes is blocked with ice the fridge is too hot. If the baffle is closed the fridge is too hot. If either of the two evaporator thermistors is duff the fridge is too hot. Check these first and then if you need further help give a call. Good luck

ModeratorRe: Servis fridge/freezer problem.
Just to confirm – the motor (compressor) is running all the time??
If so, you have one of three problems – a. the compressor is defective. b, the appliance is short of refrigerant. c, there is a blockage in the pipework which is not allowing the refrigerant to circulate. All these require the visit of a local service company which can be found at repairs@ on the home page. Good luckDales-Electronic
ModeratorRe: EAC Rumours
From what I was told last week, MFI, were, are, might be, passing all its refrigeration work to EAC and are contractually unable to pass this work to their own network. We wanted to do it, but were told it wasn’t available. What’s of more concern is the position LEC might find thereselfs
in, now being part of the GDG. However, I guess you reap what you sow and old father time is in the wings. What would be helpful with all of them is a certain amount of transparency. Interestingly, I had a chat with a bus driver yesterday who had applied to British Gas to become an appliance engineers mate. Seems an ideal candidate for the job!!Dales-Electronic
ModeratorRe: Refridgerants
Sorry – all refrigerants used by domestic appliance companies are controlled substances. Those that are required to be recovered such as R134a must be recycled or disposed of. Those that are not ozone depleting have got to be recovered for further use.
