Excellent idea Dave – Even the small guys could work with that one. We just download what we need but have the facility there to get what we want when we want it. As a safety feature you could have it password protected to keep the general public out if you wanted.

Just a quick one to add to Alex’s – the type of call carried out also has a bearing on what part gets used. If its manufacturers work, then obviously pattern parts are most likely not to be used. However, as stated earlier, if its a case of get the price right or scrap the machine/lose the job on a private call its open season –

Brian – A lively debate as usual – I have tried to answer your earlier queries first and then will move on later. Our buy is currently about 50/50. We need to be competative, but at the same time profitable and since both parts are warranted for 12 months the margins count. Being a small company we keep our stock levels to a minimum and rely on next day delivery using JIT scheme. Technical info including diagrams is always important. Cheaper manuals a great idea, but a technical helpline would be as good, not some obdurate clown quoting ‘we don’t give out help to independents’
Misquote – The cost of an appliance is often cheaper than a repair. I ask you why??. Obviously, an exchange machine comes off the production line at base cost, add to this delivery, installation and disposal and the original service call. Surely, if the parts were cheaper the independent could repair the machine without the denegration of the manufacturers tradename. I have to say the problems with the Hotpoint WMA bearing and the Merloni W series are classic cases of a cock-up gone mad. As a company we have not sold one of your machines in the last two years. Word soon gets around the retailers and their customers. We are also getting feedback from the retailers, about the appalling delays customers are expected to tolerate from the Merloni group. The callout alone makes many customers just go out and buy another machine but not a Merloni group product. You quote the problem of high BER rates of appliances. We worked as agents for Merloni for three years and had to rely on experience, to carry out most the the repairs. If you don’t support your own, you should.
There are obviously a couple of differences muted here in that the larger companies can absorb the cost of higher priced CDs whilst the smaller ones rely on the manuals. Either way its the information that is important not its format. Unfortunately, the manufacturer and customer have different aspirations regarding the product. The manufacturer is not basically interested (unless covered by extended warranty), once the machine is over 12 months. However, the customer expects the machine to last for at least 7 years. We service companies just happen to be in the middle. An earlier thread about the quality of a Bosch dishwashers clearly indicates that we can either help or hinder the manufacturer.
I have to say that it is nice to see a manufacturer coming on the site and asking sensible questions. You will get straight answers, be they critical or praiseworthy. Best regards – Ian.

Our local Currys manager indicated that they have a wait of at least four weeks for laundry and no chance on cooking – and that includes their extended warranty stuff too.

Hi mate – Not wishing to teach granny how to suck eggs but be aware that most domestic fan assisted units are set up using supposed produce temperature NOT air temperature (unless they are fitted with an air stat such as some Frigidaire units). As an example, LEC use a block of lard into which is placed a probe and the lard temperature is the one listed. Also the spec for a domestic fridge allows a temperature up to 10C although most run in the 2-5C range. I’d give the manufacturer a call first to find out what they expect before taking it further. To state the obvious it wasn’t in defrost when you had the 10C ??

Just check that the defrost timer is working at the back (this may mean you putting a mark on spindle and casing – then going back some hours later to see if it has moved) and that there are no gaps in the door seal to cabinet front. Having assured yourself that these 2 areas are ok, then check the temps in both compartments. If you think you have a temp problem as opposed to a defrosting problem – Best of luck

Hi Toni – Oh I love these – Pull off (two screws) the fan cover in the freezer section and check that the fan is running (must be at -6C or greater with compressor going)
If not check that the fan is ok. If not change it. If the fan is OK move up to the control facia area remove electronic module and check that there are no dry joints visible, if there are, resolder. If this still doesnt get the fan going send the board to QER who can repair it for you. Be aware that they don,t always get it first time around and the board may have to be sent back a couple of times. If you have fan action but the fridge is too hot, take the fridge control housing and check that the vent is open if not suspect duff motorised baffle (pt no – 2600239). If you need wiring diagrams etc Ive got the technical publication here. Good luck – Ian

Re: indesit w133s selector keeps turning

Just make sure you are counting at the correct position. Let the appliance do its thing with the initial load of flashes and once the timer knob starts motoring around start checking the flashes. You should get a number of flashes then a gap and then the same number of flashes again. ie in your case (?) 3 flashes, gap, 3 flashes, gap etc. It may be that the indication is the three flashes (from memory) thermistor fault . However, these are buggers to fix because indication flashes does not alway equate to fault. Backing up Martin, make sure that you check out valves, heater, pump (both blockages and electrically) burnt selector contacts, motor brushes for uneven wear (thanks Tony @ EMW on 01623 647537) and then if you still think you have a module fault have a chat with Tony (listed above) who does a cheap test on modules (or repair if required)> Good Luck.
