since the board is dead its either going to be a power supply fault or its toast

you can normally get an idea by finding the switch mode power supply unit and measuring the output. to get an idea of wht to expect look at the relays on the board if they are 12v expect around that. if you are not gettinh that and when you measure the voltage it seems to bob up and down then there is a short somewhere on the board
hope you understand have tried to keep it simple can be a bit high tech for some people

    main motor
thats ok as long as the cap is new should be ok

    the pump
only by putting power to it directly to it. you can power it off the machine but it needs water to start so its not a good test. but if you can run the unit with the side off when it fails to drain if its the pump thats buzzing then you know its either got something stuck or it needs replacing

either way take great care its mains voltages and death can be fatal

also check inlet valves. the rubbers inside the valves split and the inlet water speed slows down causing probs
normally you can remove valve coils and unscrew valve body to check then find a qualtex valve that comes apart the same way and swop the tops. works a treat and a hell of a lot cheaper than miele

Re: Hotpoint DWF50 failing to drain

when you say you drained the water out you did not say whether you bailed it out manually or the electric pump drained it
if the electric pump drained it then its ok and not faulty altough with age these type of pumps get intermittant

most likely fault is the capacitor on you main pump motor. did you fit a new one ( ie was the motor supplied with one ? )

Re: Miele W827 w/m programme problems

my next question would be which cycles does it work on ?

    does it heat ok ?
    does motor reverse ok ?

any other light flashing when it goes to the end ? ( ie fault code )

what it boils down to is look for the obvious first. if it works on some wash programmes its less likely to be the board

    Re: Trade Secrets?

I agree a closed shop is not the way to go but neither is a total free for all. It worries me also the questions that are asked by engineers some of which can be answered by a quick forum search.
The trade itself has had a big shake out not too many years ago. The ability to clear a pump and change brushes would fix most jobs, but now the electronic problems have put paid to a lot of these so called engineers, leaving the ones who can make the change. Only last week I had 2 jobs where a shorting triacs on the pcb caused problems in the machine which is not a job some engineers can do nevermind the general public
As part of the independant sector I see this site as way of earning trust so the public will feel more comfortable in calling an independant rather than the manufacturer
I help people all the time on the phone it builds customer loyalty. normally simply faults like filters the never knew existed (who reads the manuals or can find tham when theres a fault), clocks on cookers to changing the socket the appliance was plugged into
