    I was talking to one of the guys in the factory about this problem, we see a lot of them. He tells me it’s caused by cement dust getting under the washers when the bolts are fitted (it’s an automatic machine operation), cement dust builds up in the counterweight and bolt fitting machine, and every now and then it ends up under some washers, so when the bolts are torqued down by the machine it is onto a cushion of dust, when the machine goes into service, vibration causes the dust to shake out, and voila! a loose counterweight.
    Normally we catch them before any damage is done because the owner compains about excessive noise on spin.

    Brush wear on these machines is very common, especially if the machine is overloaded or used a lot. We replace the motor (easier than replacing the brushes), but for independents, then a brush change is the answer. The module rarely fails on the motor circuit unless the motor has shorted out. The symptom for a blown module is that the door won’t lock (seriously), to all the world it looks like a dead interlock, when you get the module out there are burned out tracks on the pcb. On some models motor harness wiring is chafed on the bottom counterweight leading to a short and a dead module. But in 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of cases, motor not turning, dead brushes.

    Hotperloni engineers used to have an easy in to the claims dept at D&G, we could easily get a machine written off, if the parts cost for a bog standard washing machine came to over £200 (easy peasy) or £300 for a washer dryer they would write it off there and then. But now we can only do it through the exchange authorisation department at Hotpoint, and they will do everything they can to get us to rebuild the machine. Methinks that D&G have been putting pressure on Hotperloni to reduce the number of write offs – 1200 engineers writing off 2 or 3 machines a week – that must have been making a dent in D&G’s profits.

    You can be as stuffy as you like martin, I replace 10 GDA motors per week with FHP motors across the whole (digital) WM and WD range. Never had a recall on one yet, so prat about with plug kits if you like, I’ll carry on doing it the easy way.

    It’s when we see a company call “Easy – Appliance” start, you know, the “no frills appliance company” selling appliances at 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} above factory gate price that we all have to start worrying, and I can see it happening soon. Don’t forget that the sheds buy Indesit basic washing machines for around £95, so any large organisation who wants to run on very tight margins have a great deal of leeway with pricing.

    Shame they didn’t do their homework first, they should have contacted UKWhitegoods and simply asked which machines were the best to nick, and we could have told them, Indesit – Ariston – Hotpoint of course, will they never learn, they had the opportunity and they blew it!!!

    There’s a very similar fault on Hotpoint WMA’s, blown controller card, if you look at the wiring connections to the control board it seems that the interlock has fried the board ….. but it’s the motor, it’s always the motor (1604116). Nice to hear that wonderful, built like a brick khazi Bosch mess up too.

    I love stubs, they earn me so much money, I love dozy plumbers and kitchen fitters, they buy me all those little luxuries that make life worth while, long may fat filled stub connections last, long may blocked up non return valves from B&Q pour money into my bank account, long may DIY enthusiasts mess up appliance installations.     Hotperloni engineers all carry appliance descaler which we are pushed to sell to customers “Keeps your machines clean, gets rid of limescale and gunge, madam” £9 per box of 10 applications (£15 for two boxes), the most important part of this miracle powder is that I get £3 per box (£7 for 2).

    Do it the hotpoint way mate. mark the tacho end of the plug, snip off the locating lugs and fit the same plug into the FHP motor making sure you have the tacho connections at the correct end. Works every time, and it’s very quick. The only other thing you need to do is to fit a spade connector to the earth lead.

    Pretty common fault this, sadly not documented. Probably caused by spikes on the mains, in my experience it happens in houses where hubby is a DIY enthusiast. The machine has been spiked while writing to the eeprom, this causes the program to become corrupted.
    Rewrite the eeprom (or replace it) problem will go away.

    I heard this week that Merloni have lost maintenance on Indesit / Ariston appliances (they do all the Hotpoint warranty repairs) as from next week, they are going to do it themselves, that will make a big hole in our earnings, at least 15{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of my work is comet warranty.

    we use the test plug with a USB lead connected to the laptop, we have some software called wash doctor which allows us to look into the module and perform tests, as well as another piece of software called eeprom writer which allows us to reprogram the eeproms, our van stock contains blank evo 1 and evo 2 eeproms.
    Maybe this kit is available outside merloni, the hardware certainly is, there is a part number and price for it, as for the software …. maybe somebody else knows.
