I’m not keen on modern Indepoint machines because it’s such a pain to get the module out, except for the budget WIA range where it’s behind the fascia. Hate the Zanussi down the side modules even more, especially WD’s.
Give me the Bosch anyday for nice easy working on. Ditto Beko.
Maybe a good way to semi-retire would be to only take work on the species I like. Hmm. 💡

I assumed agro meant that he classed Hotpoint with Zanussi for reliability and therefore recommended Beko when either of the former two broke down. I’d be inclined to agree with him if that’s what he meant.
Have only had two or three Beko BER’s against every ten Hotpoint/Zanussi’s. (Although that could be a reflection of market share).

As far as I understand it from reading messageboards, there is likely to be a revolutionary advance in LED lighting technology within a few years and the compact flourescents are being sold off cheap now before they become obsolete. These fantastic special offers (such as one for 95p or 5 for 49p) are allegedly indirectly funded by you and me the taxpaying suckers.
Remember that if you drop one and it smashes you will be exposed to the nasty toxic mercury vapour. You don’t want to be breathing that in. I read somewhere that you should evacuate the room for 15 minutes and not use a vacuum cleaner to clean up the mess. Think there was also something about calling in the council to deal with the clean up just like for asbestos. Wonder how many of those supermarket stacks have fallen over already?

I also give the cleaned commutator a brush and blow along the grooves with a small paint brush in the hope of getting rid of residual carbon dust in those grooves. Ideally I take the motor out in the garden.

Hmm. Don’t fancy going straight in with a board till I’ve checked the cheaper options. (Got a good s/h FHP motor, is it interchangeable with the Bosch?) Anyway, from what I gather he’s had the banging pipes for ages but had just turned the radio up. I like these customers who just put up with things, rather than worry about every little noise.

I did my first one of these last week. Both pump units were shot, I imagine the circulation side had failed a while ago but that the machine had continued to operate as its impellor was off. The circulation pipe was blocked by plastc film where it joins the door seal. The original uses two identical Plaset pumps with front facing terminals and each has a toc.
It is best to get a pump with front facing terminals for the drain pump side as the terminals would otherwise be right up close to the cabinet wall. I used a genuine WMA pump which has a toc and cost about £9.
For the circulation pump side I used an Askoll with toc and rear facing terminals. That was about £6. Everything went in smoothly although the drain pump was still making an occasional hiccup noise on test which I decided not to worry about as I’m sure the customer will let me know if there’s a problem.
The machine I worked on (forgot to get model no.) had an enclosed base and the front came off easily enough once the screws had been punched with a centre punch to loosen them. The fascia comes off easy complete with front board to reveal two screws holding front on at top (AEG style). The filter body clips in place into the plastic base so like helo says you need to get underneath.
I don’t know why people are slagging off Askoll, they’re as good or better than Plaset for magnet pumps IMO.

Good, I saw they had one in Lidl’s today. Maybe I’ll invest.

I’ll look into conversion from cassette tape to digital file, it would be useful to be able to do that. I could be gone sometime, though.

LawrencePrecisely. Anyone calling out or estimating for free (really) has to make it up on the completed jobs. Or go out of business.
Maybe that’s been said before. Oh well, circles are a good way to go round.

Phidom wrote: Why don’t you just cut the wires to the old carbons and solder on complete new ones?
That’s a good idea. I’ll probably do that in future. Reason I didn’t before was because I thought they needed to be spot welded as that’s how they appear to be attached originally. I imagine it might be difficult getting enough heat onto the brass holder to make a good joint as the holder will sink the heat away. But I’ll give it a go.
