Martin wrote:I know you’re only joking there Mike and Lee with his sucking rotten eggs is a little extreme to say the least.

You must remember guys that both employed and self-employed read this thread and often never the twain doth meet (as it were). Nevertheless some may take objection toward their choice of career being somewhat belittled or indeed over exaggerated.

Much does benefit the employed engineer, the main being security and rightly so. And in these uncertain times security wins hands down overall. Self employed can indeed command a 2 or 3 times a £25K salary but my god you’d have to work your n*ts off to get close or even sustain that in the long term without the need for help and thus taking on (dare I say it?) an employee. 🙂

Each has merit enough right now. If you’re happy with your lot and can earn a living in this game then that’s good enough. Looking over the fence to see if it’s greener is not much of an option right now. In some cases the grass is growing like hell, but in many others it’s parched and dry and only good for paving over and forgetting! 😉

I know what your saying Martin, But after 11 years with the company i worked for, I got a redundency letter that explained due to decline in profitability of the business the branch i was working for would be closed before xmas 2008.

The branch is STILL open and covering the 3 letting agents contracts i set up and ran!

So in my view only, I would NEVER trust a employer ever again. 😕

Self Employment is BRILLIANT ( So long as you have the will and the drive to do it ).

    Employed SUCKS ROTTEN EGGS.

    as simple as that!

Theres white goods engineers in this town that won’t and have not ever touched cookers, and how easy are fan elements to change?
When you CAN , i guess MANY tradespeople pick n choose, why the hell not?

James Bolam came into our shop now and then, he owns a henry vac and a dc07. lol.

as he was leaving he said seeya again, i said… only if your H.A.P.P.Y , just give a little grin and walked, amazing how they look their age when not in make up though.

Had a transvestite came in one saturday morning 9:10am,Real tall, first customer of the day, i was still half asleep, high heels on, long tight jogging type pants, leapord print top and a long blonde wig, 3 tonne of make up.
Must of been about 50 yr old, man bits were pulled right under and petruding at the rear like he had just had a huge shyte in hes pants.
Then he/she/it said “do you have a 2 gang blank”.

Seriously my ribs were aching for days.

    Re: are your ears burning?

I don’t have a problem with it as the internet is rife with the answers.
The only worry i have is a member of the public might get seriously hurt one day, yes i know they are the “gonna delve into it anyway” types, But when it happens the place that gave him the last bit of confidence to jump in there might take a bit of bad press! “hey don’t go biting at this view, i know it could be also one of the other sites that it happens to”
    It’s just my view.

Besides, many of them f**k it right up anyway and don’t try again. lol.

    exactly Jim.
I’m not interested in making a fast million and vanishing or plan on retiring any time soon so specualting to accumulate future work, as long as it “trickles” away with low labour charges im confident i will get reccomendations and a decent rep.
    That’s the plan anyway.

Ya can make up the labour sometimes on the parts too as ya know so that helps.

    Re: Worst Week Ever

Martin is surely choosing what he specialises in because after many many years of trading hes probably only a pound behind jim and therefore can pick and choose, and who can blame him?
Looking foreward to the day i can do the same, but i wouldn’t of thought it was being snobby? + hes feeding other engineers mouths by leaving them a bit of meat? lol

    Re: Worst Week Ever

The north and south have a very different economy, which in turn makes people spend and think very differently.
Please don’t ask me to elaborate as theres many reasons why this is, a whole book could be written about it, infact wasn’t there a documentary on some time ago about the very thing?

Even so, i found the south very tight a$$ed buggers ( no offence ) But a lot of customers did have high end products and could be spanked a little bit more to make up for them. lol.

She already had a new belt to go on it Bo.

TBH it would of been £30 labour as thats normally the case with me, But as she talked and talked and talked some more about pure shyte i added a tenner on for doing my head in. 😉

Yes martin you are spot on, you guys have it good down the south, i did too while i was there ( 15 years of it ) but im back in my home town now, lots of poverty up here.

I ain’t looking to get rich, but i am looking to build a good reputation so my little earned money per week continues.
