As soon as i get the that type of customer on the blower i just tell them the callout & suggest they think about it & get back to me.. about 5{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} actually do :rolls: I’ve long since lost patience with the type who can be ‘persuaded’ initially to have a repair done, then phone you to cancel at the 11th hour 👿
Afraid i’m not willing to grovel to anyone, no matter how empty the job book may be 🙁

Dont think i’d bother with it myself, my knowlege is worth more than begging some tite wad to stump up a few quid IMO :rolls:
On a wider point, i actually believe the current poor work level a lot of us are experiencing is much more to do with the ongoing problems in the world economy.
My last good year was 2007.. just before the recession hit..coincidence?? 😕

If people feel skint they will try to do things on the cheap, like fixing their appliances with info gleaned from the web.
For instance, my car was playing up a couple of months ago, now normally when i’ve got a healthy wallet, i’d just drop it off at a local small garage i’ve used for years & let them sort it out.
However with my current workload i’m A. skint & B. time rich, so i ended up spending an afternoon on the drive rummaging under the bonnet.
And yes, i did look for help online on a Vauxhall forum 😉 and some useful pointers were found as to why my charriots Turbo wasnt boosting till 2k RPM (clogged EGR valve if youre interested 😉 )
But had i been as busy as i was in the past i really wouldnt have bothered, i’d rather be out earning money in a game i know something about & chatting to the yummy mummys over a cup of tea than covered in exhaust soot from an Astra 🙁

So i’m not writing this game off just yet, economic conditions will improve.. they always do (dont they? 😯 ) people will be more inclined to pay for our services, appliance prices will rise, and all will be well in the world 🙂 Its true, a bloke down the pub told me 8)

Martin might still be floggin his Bosch spares online so that possibly explains his bias 😉
Thats just human nature though isnt it, change will always happen, some will benefit, some will loose out, if you do well out of a major change in the way business is done, like the internet, you’ll view it as the best thing since sliced bread.
If however you feel threatened by it & the changes its bringing, you’ll likely stick your head in the sand & pine for the old days 🙁

I’ve really just accepted the fact that we as engineers are going to be much thinner on the ground in the coming years & we’re going to have to be pretty smart in more ways than one if we want to survive in this game.
Kinda analogous to the fishing industry i guess, we simply dont need so many in the fleet these days, sad but what can you do :con:

I take it its got the little single level press sw on it, with top ups timed by the board?
Upping the base level fill by turning the large screw on the switch anti clockwise should work in theory ❓
Having said that, if it all goes t#ts up in a customers house….you aint seen me… right 😯

When that side door was open did that lettering read ‘we have nothing to offer for domestic appliances’? 😕

Think i seen a similar sentiment on an Indesit van recently.. or at least thats what they should have on their vans 👿

It fair makes me smile when they carefully remove the ‘sheet’ of compacted lint thinking its part of the machine, set it aside, clean out any stray bits of fluff, then refit most of what should have come out 😕

    Bless their cotton socks 🙂

Slight correction that I feel compelled to make…

You were much busier when the cost of a new appliance was a serious consideration when weighed against the potential cost

And thats mainly because they were mostly reasonably well made.. and that costs 😉
They were so much more repairable too, so quite often you’d see a Hotpoint say at 3 or 4 years old for its first brush change & then maybe care for it for the next 10 years or so 😯
Now my typical day is spent dealing with machines which are mostly 3/5 yrs old and get one or two repairs before the customer decides they’re worn out and starts again.

So I’ll stand by my point about the disposable domestic appliance being to blame for my slim fast bank balance 😉 but how & why we’ve arrived at this point has indeed many reasons.
Extreme competition, & Joe public expecting to get a top notch washer for £300 decade after decade are certainly the main drivers of this trend though 🙁

If that question’s for me helo then no, i certainly bloody wouldnt, but then i dont sell the things.
No, im just curious why in cometbez’s neck of the woods your company seems to be apparently very generous in dishing out free out of guarantee repairs, but my customers experiences round these parts seem a bit different.

Dont get me wrong, if repairs FOC outwith the guarantee period are commonly carried out by Kesa then that is to be applauded, in fact i wish the EU would introduce a minimum 2 year guarantee on all electrical appliances, that would see quality rise across the board IMO.

Lerch, i really dont think the cheap garbage on sale everywhere these days does much for my business, the very fact they are cheap means they’re much more likely to simply be chucked anyway, and the faults that do crop up tend often to be towards the BER end of the scale.

I was much busier in the days when most machines were pretty well made, i havnt really changed my way of trading or fallen out with many customers 😉 yet the phone rings much less 🙁
Got to blame the disposable domestic appliance i would say

CometBez wrote: Luckily for the customer they then came to us for a second opinion, as the appliance was only 16months old we did the full repair for free

So is this Comets official policy ❓ if so i wish the staff in the Inverness branch were made aware of it, i’ve had two customers contact me recently with Zanussi machines bought in Comet, one had failed bearings & the other a failed PCB. The machines were both less than 18 months old.

Comet were invited to help on both occasions but no free repairs were offered 🙁 in fact the elderly customers with the PCB problem were basically told it was their own fault for ignoring the offers to buy an extended guarantee 😯 I only have their word on this of course but i think they are genuine enough people.

The best thing the likes of Kesa & DSG could do for all their customers is use their considerable clout to drive the manufacturers to improve the basic quality of the appliances they sell, thats what would make customers really happy.

But then theres more money in landing Chinese tat at the docks at £45 a unit with a bought out guarantee, punting it out for £179 & crossing ones fingers that it doesnt eat into the margin too much with failures or burning too many customers houses down :rolls:

Re: Paying For Waste.. BSH Boss Says They Shouldn’t Have To

Hmm.. not sure i like the idea of a third world war lee but i know what youre saying 😉 Contraception, education, & lifting people out of dirt poor poverty would be the more humane solution though surely 😯

Is it really too much to ask for a world where every country has developed enough to give their citizens a decent standard of living, population is at a level that gives other species some room on this planet, & the tropical forests have been restored, a world where we’re all trading peacfully with each other & religion & superstition have been replaced with science & reasoning… IS that asking TOO much?? 😯

Ah yes, it is isnt it 😳

Anyway, wots this got to do with Bosch Siemens Hausgerate? back on topic methinks 🙂

Indeed lee, and if the planets’ entire population of 6.8 Billion (and rising) expects to have all the things we have in the west and is as wasteful with materials & energy as we currently are then God ‘elp us :rolls:

Think i read somewhere we would need the resources of three planet earths to bring the globes’ human population up to the average European level of lifestyle.. double it if we are talking USA levels of profligacy 😯
Recycling simply HAS to be a part of all our futures, whats the alternative on a planet with finite resources & an exploding population?

We’ve also simply been too sucessful at breeding as a species 😯 and just as a host Animal can only support a finite number of fleas sucking its blood before it dies, so the Earth must have a max population capacity if we are to have any sort of a quality of life.

Really, when i see some yummy mummy down the council recycling centre carefully popping her carrier bag of empty wine bottles into the glass bin, keys to a Mitsubishi Shogun in her hand (with 3 kids seats in the back) i feel like shouting ” DRIVE A BLOODY FIESTA & STOP SHAGGING SO MUCH IF YOURE THAT WORRIED ABOUT THE PLANET!!”
Thats not allowed though so i just letch her nice bum instead 😉

True enough Greg, in fact im fixing this fellows machine with a good tub i rescued from an identical machine which was BER with a duff PCB (all they had done to ruin that one was turn it off during spin 😯 )
Whipped the drum out of the donor machine in 10 mins, hopefully it will go back in in half hour or so ❓
Thing is, had i not had a good drum it would be heading for the tip, too expensive on a £250 machine lets face it.

Anyhow, returning to the subject of the thread, i do actually recommend Beko to those wanting a basic machine, by & large they’re engineer friendly 🙂
