I think that point has arrived already for a lot of brands 🙁
Thats maybe gonna improve this year, the Chinese are making noises about letting the Yuan float against other currencies & that might make their products cheap rather than silly cheap :rolls:
Osborne is likely to raise VAT on tues too.. although that will be a mixed blessing if it happens 😯Madmac

At the end of the day as long as the punters call us to repair the things & they are actually repairable.. i couldnt give a monkeys where theyre made.. gotta move with the times 😯

Comet are doing the same machine for a similar price.. dropped from a little over £300.. still leaving them plenty margin on these Chinese sourced machines i’m sure though :rolls:
Anyone know how repairable these things are ❓ bolted or sealed drums etc ❓ Cost concious punters will no doubt be snapping them up in these tight times, £250 for a once respected name will draw them in.The chav’s needing to stretch the states’ money so they can still get plastered at the weekend will maybe be more tempted by the Tecnolec Comet are offering for £149… nice :rolls:

The annoying thing about this cheap tat is people use it as ‘ammunition’ to try to beat you down on price on a higher value repair ‘But i can get a NEW one in Argos for a little more than that’ ..blah..blah :rolls:
They probably wouldnt actually buy it of course but they’ll point it out to you anyway.Does harm to our cause though no doubt, why not buy two of these for £300 & chuck ’em when they break instead of spending £300 0n a better known name ❓
They’re likely to break very quickly of course but is that so different to the average sealed drum Zanussi or Hotpoint badged tat these days ❓ ❓Madmac

Yep, suprisingly so 😯 Well, lets see what the next five years bring  Never in all my life have i been so glad to see a Government leave office though, the smothering ,nanny state that Labour has created needs to be dismantled in a big way if we want to maintain any quality of life in this country.
It does sometimes feel like the worst thing to to be on these islands is A.Self employed, B.Not reliant on any handouts, C.Born & bred here.
(Alf Garnett rant over 🙂 )
Having got drawn into the new labour hype in the ’90s & giving them my vote like many others did :rolls: i would have to say Never again! though.Leopards, it would seem, really cant change their spots. 🙁

Ironically ive got 6 decent jobs booked in for tomorrow, more than i had during most of last week 😯 I’ve heard of feast & famine but the way it is right now is doing my nut!
One week you’re seriously thinking its the end of the road for the game, & then the next the phone miraculously springs back to life 😯
Really pisses me off when its like this though, cant plan for anything, a predictible monthly income is looking more & more desirable.Trouble is i doubt very much if i could take orders from anyone now..prob lucky to last a week without whacking someone 🙂 The curse of self employment i’m afraid.. i think it actually leaves you unemployable! scary thought 😯

Like i say, people often over estimate their DIY potential, encouraged by the likes of the e spares (spit) videos :rolls: still, in the scenario you describe at least youre making your callout, and the machine lives on 🙂
Its the ones who order a part, cock up the fitting, blow the machine up, & then take it to the tip who would really be cheaper calling the pros in the first place 8)Madmac

Work is deathly quiet though overall, not only our trade but most service trades are crawling along right now so we’re not alone.
What i cant grasp is why the appliance repair trade is so quiet in a recession ❓ A house extension, new kitchen, new bathroom project is very likely to be put off for a while in these tight times, people feel insecure, banks dont want to lend, so its very easy to see why all the associated trades are sitting waiting for the phone to ring.
Whitegoods on the other hand are surely a necessity 😯 i get told every week how awful having a broken washing machine is.. rather loose my left arm..blah, blah is the usual line.
So i think we can safely say people are not sitting at home looking at broken domestic appliances.. so what are they doing ❓Fixing it themselves? a few do, no doubt, but i think we over estimate the percentage of the general public capable/ inclined to do anything but simple repairs. when youre of a practical bent i think you assume everyone can do similar stuff, but having seen some of my friends & relatives attempts at even basic DIY i’ve decided this really isnt the case! 8)
So are they buying cheap replacements, thinking its more cost effective than getting the old thing fixed? Seems a more likely explaination.. witness the way the public have been flocking to the likes of Aldi etc for that other necessity… food.
My worry is, is this change in the market permanent, or will the trade recover when people feel better off? If people find that a Beko does the same job as their Bosch did then maybe not ❓ 🙁Madmac

I know what you mean, at the stage where i just cant decide whether to try to stick it out for another year or two in the hope of things picking up, or just jack it in soon & get into something else while i’m still in my forties!Makes you feel very insecure thinking you’re one of the last few fish in a pond which is being slowly drained.. 😯

Cheers for the responses chaps, its just the way that it was not responding to ANY button apart from the actual on/off one (which of course is a simple mechanical switch) that made me think its got a major fault, cant run any diagnostics.
But hey, worth another look i guess, now i’ve calmed down 🙂 logic would certainly suggest its something i’ve done.. 😯 although i did take the back off again & check motor & heater connections.. not the pump mind you. oh well, ta ta £90 if i cant find it. 🙁

ParticipantRe: Indesit £74.95
Well i guess it works out at around a third of the cost of a basic Indesit badged machine..not sure if its good value or not TBH..depends what the repair is i suppose 😕
A customer told me yesterday that Hoover/Candy wanted £120 to knock on the door to fix her machine 😯 (blocked pump) made my £40 look bloody good! 8)
I would imagine Indesits price will just be a ‘foot in the door’ ploy, i think they usually push an extended maintainance contract pretty hard on most calls.. i certainly wont be putting work their way. -
