ParticipantRe: Hoover HNC175 Condenser T/D – Jockey pulleys
Yeh, did one a few weeks ago. carry on & take the drum out, only way of doing a proper job, time consuming but not difficult. I found belt pulley totally worn & needed replaced, drum support ones just needed clean & dab of grease.

I usually whip the drum out of the vented machines micky, easy enough to do & lets you do a total de-fluff. Most need a shaft /bearings/seal kit to let you give any sort of guarantee i find.. Bloody terrible pile of price driven tin foil but earns us a crust eh ? 😉

ParticipantRe: How many pints can you buy for £1500?
I think the way to view it is, human nature being what it is, there will always be a que o f people more than happy to let you work for nothing. What you say with no callout charge is ‘I dont value my time’. Like a lot of us i started on my own offering punters that old carrot to build up a customer base, but when i look back on the reams of timewasters i had to put up with i wouldnt recommend it. With so many more BER machines & Diesel at £5 a gal it makes even less sense. By all means set your fees at a sensible level for your area, but value your time or no bugger will :rolls:

ParticipantRe: Essential parts to always carry
Never bought a new inlet valve??! Im all for recycling but considering the grief that would come from one sticking open i dont think thats a road id go down.. Never forget that in our wonderful white goods world, if it can go wrong, it more than likely bloody will ! 🙂

Glad to hear youre doing well with refurb machines. On reading through this thread the general consensus seems to be to concentrate on giving a personal & honest service to your customers & they,ll keep coming back. let the percentage of the public who will always buy cheap & throw out, go & get their sub £200 skip fodder, they may or may not sit down one day & work out that their ‘bargains’ are not really bargains at all. :rolls:

for a few years now iv’e been wearing scruffs saftey trainers but to me they don’t seem to last too long, trouble is it’s all the bending of the sole when your inspecting machines.
I used to wear DM’s but since they moved production to china they have not been the same since.Dave I used to waste money buying trainers or leather boots every 6 months, but as you say , all the bending wrecks them.. The answer..?? HIKING BOOTS!! Seriously, go for a quality boot with Gore-Tex in the areas which flex the most and you cant go wrong. I bought a pair of Brashers 2 years ago £60 in jan sales, worn to work 5/6 days a week , still in superb condition! 😯

Well yes there will always be the type of customer who will look beyond the bare economics when faced with a broken appliance, who will think of the environment & the hassle of shopping for a large appliance.I just hope there is enough of these types out there when it gets to the stage where a couple of days average wage gets you a new machine.Hmm.. i dont know..we’ll see i guess. Be in no doubt though, the long term goal of the volume producers & retailers is to change the public perception of large appliances from one of consumer durable which you should get repaired, to totally disposable. But yes, its up to us in this industry to give the public an attractive alternative to just buying new without thinking.. i just hope they will still give us the chance 10 years from now.. 😯

Thats true enough ken, its called living with a free market economy i guess. I just find it so frustrating seeing the utter waste generated by the ever decreasing replacement cycles built into almost all appliances. I just wonder what numbers the greed for sales will see us at.. 3 year life & £150 retail is already with us.. Ive got 25 years to retirement & a family to support.. thats why i worry, & despite the normal hassles, its a trade ive enjoyed for 15 years & i would miss it 🙁
