Speaking of goats :rolls: this one gets mine “Being a plumber can you fix my leaking tap while you are here?” PLUMBER 👿 👿 I usually reply “I am sorry I am not or never have been a plumber, I had an education and I can trace my parentage” 😆 😆

By any chance has the stats been swopped over? I got caught by this one once , the customer had changed the stats himself and got them wrong way around and conveniently never told me 😕

One of the funniest and annoying thing’s customers do is after you complete a repair is, as they hand over the cheque they say “oh while you are here can you have a quick look at **** ”
I think the mentality is I’ve paid him now so he won’t charge me again :rolls: yeah right 😉

spanner51 wrote:Doing an earth loop impedance test is always good practise, however unless you understand the reading, and have an electrical qualfication i.e City & Guilds 236/238 or equivalent then the test is meaningless.

And can be a very dangerous test if you are not sure of it’s use.
If there is a loose or poor main earth then the 25 amp test can find a different route, but so can a earth bond test 😉 the plus side is in the right hands it is an invaluable test.
Point in case, yesterday I discovered a whole series of sockets in a kitchen with no earth, a martindale may not do this, a resistance check with a basic megger may not have shown this either 😕

timdowning wrote:You write like ‘Cornwell40’ is a complete idiot. Why is it so difficult to believe that a customer would do such a thing? and that something could have been done to prevent it.

I think the focus should be more on the customer rather than the engineer in question.

We all know that there are Health and Safety rules but accidents can still happen.

Couldn’t agree more Tim, Cornwell40 is probably a very competant person I have no bones about that, but on the same hand I feel very strongly about safety issues both engineers and customers. I will hold my hand up and confess that the self same thing has happened to me on more that one occasion, there is no halo above my head. 😳
Is it not good that we are now talking about this? I raised the issue a while back and it quietly disapeared from sight. Cornwell40’s post has at least brought the topic up again, I can only say well done Cornwell40.
If my coice of words caused offence then I am man enough to applogise, but if the customer had been electrocuted then I am sure the words that solicitors would use would be more devastating, thankfully it ain’t got that far.
I couldn’t agree more with Ken’s comment about never being a 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure, but if a we can at least bring the level up is it not a good thing?especially if the new TA is to be respected in the industry.
I also cannot remember anyone being hurt in the white goods industry, sadly I cannot say the same for brown goods, one of my best friends was electrocuted by his television, the day after it had been repaired. The engineer responsible for leaving a appliance in a lethal state never worked in the industry again after he was blamed at the inquiry.

Yes Ken a seperate thread would be advisable

Martin, where could you find all that information easily on one or two pages if you were wishing to start a career in this business? It took me ages to find all that information and it came in parts from different sources 😉
This is a good start Clive The HSE, The IEE
Would it be a good idea to try and correlate what the manufacturers are advising their engineers?

    Just an idea.
How about clear and concise guidelines about Heath and Safety, Risk Assessment, use of Test equipment etc, so as members are in no doubt of what their obligations are. Would this give greater credence to the TA?

Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

Yes WE have all had this happen, but I drew the line along time ago, it’s a simple matter of creating a barrier of some description, toolbox, chairs etc. you have got to have eyes in the back of your head. The average moron cannot see the danger this is why it is up to YOU 😉
. A police tape barrier sounds a bit ludicrous but believe you me if the smelly hits the fan it won’t look that bad will it?

None of us would not put up with children in the same room when we are working so should you put up with the adult version?

Sorry to put a mockers on this Cornwell40 but get your act together man!! I had to read it twice in disbelievment.!!!!Why didn’t you set up a barrier or warn the woman to stay well back, you know this sh!t all comes down to “Risk assessment” and “health and safety” If she had been killed, jees it doesn’t bare thinking about. I know it’s not always possible but the customer should not be in the same room as you if you are working with live appliances.

Ill get off my box now.

    Re: Connect Backorders

We try our best not to put things on backorder, I would rather buy a part of another wholesaler even if it is a few quid more, at least your customer don’t have to wait. Sadly there are occasions when no one has the part and you are put in the hands of the gods, we usually keep the customer informed. What P!sses me off is when you have waited four weeks for a part they turn around and tell you it’s obsolite, you would think in this day and age of computers this shouldn’t happen.
