ParticipantRe: NVQ for the Domestic Appliance industry.
This issue is getting me rather worried.
I have been in the domestic appliance industry for nearly thirty years, prior to that I trained as an electrician. 15 years ago I started up as self employed. In that time I have built up a very successful business, with thousands of customers, most of who are loyal to me. I know from their comments to me that what I am doing is right for them.
As far as I am aware I comply with all Health and Safety issues both for the customer and myself. Which as an individual takes great effort to stay up to date.It is my belief that MY CAMP is sound. I do not believe that I need a paid overseer to inundate my business with extra paperwork. We all know how hard and difficult this industry is becoming. Being self employed means that I work in the region of 12-14 hours per day, sadly more and more time is being spent “doing paperwork” rather than out in the field. Consequently because of this my income is less now than it was five years ago. You cannot tell me that if we do have a Quango over us then would their employees accept a yearly drop in income.
Yes, I would not have any objection to being “vetted” occasionally, and would welcome any criticism or otherwise that may be directed.I think my comments here will ring sound with many others in this trade, and may well upset others, but at least I am willing to say them. I read comments of “well at my age I might just as well go and stack shelves in Tesco if this trade gets any more difficult “ We should be worried that these “old hands “ will be driven out of the business. We all hear that British Industry is “going down the pan fast.” We may have a scenario similar to that of the teachers, doctors and nurses who have retired early and are now greatly missed.

I have always said that the “domestic appliance repair industry” including the self employed requires some sort of governing body to make sure that only skilled people work in it. It is all to easy to “have a go “in this business. My personel experience was for a local guy to start up in business against me in my area, AFTER I Had repaired and serviced his washer. His previous occupations, bus driver and taxi driver.
I know of a least two “handy men” in my village that have a go. NO experience. NO test equipment. NO responsibility. I cannot for the life of understand why people ask them to have a look, other than they think they cannot afford professionals. If there is to be legislation for standards in this industry then UKW is IMO could be in the best position to promote it. They main problem that I would be worried about, would be “high annual” fees to be paid out to stay registered. In my position and I believe in most others, this cost would have to be absorbed into the business OR passed onto the customers. It is increasingly difficult to keep repair costs down with the manufacturers “jacking up” spare parts prices to farcical level. If UKW do get “the say” in how the industry is governed then I hope that my concerns are taken on board. I am sure others will agree. WHAT WE DONT WANT IS ANOTHER GOVERNMENT QUANGO with high paid officials that we have to fund.

ParticipantRe: Near death experience.
Strewth mate that was a close one, get yourself a couple of whiskies down yourself tonight.
I had a similar experience a few years back. I pulled up to give way to someone coming the other way over a narrow bridge, hand brake on lit a fag. I waved at the other driver as he went passed, then noticed that I was moving with the handbrake on. I had stopped on a slight hill which was covered with black ice. The worring part was then to come. I was heading for a side road into the river, at the last minuet I got some grip and drifted into the bridge wall, with great damage to my Hotpoint van. It loked good on the accident form “speed of impact ” was 3 mph. no one believed me.
Good to here you are OK

Got called to a built in oven yesterday 8) . On arrival the lady said the FAN OVEN won’t heat up, Ok says I.
This is an upstairs flat, down I went to van to get the “workmate”out, back up stairs. Oven is in a corner and I struggle to get it out. Checks the element, duff. She says Ok to fitting a new one, back to van. Fits part. Oven back in, tested. Workmate back to van, back up for toolbox, back to van. Finnaly goes back upstairs and made an invoice out. There you are my dear! reply, so what was wrong with the grill she says? (me) Grill, you said oven. Yes the grill dosn’t work either she says Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.Thick or what.

ParticipantRe: messy houses
“Once upon a time” I was servicing a washer, checked the door seal and found that my fingers were sticky, had a closer look to find I was covered in baby crap. Lazy cow had just been chucking nappies straight into the washer. 😥 🙄
“Once upon a time” I was working in this hovel and I started to itch. The female of the house was standing near to me and I could see her “scalp” moving. She had nicotene up to the elbow. All around the kitchen were slug trails. Looked at her and thought mmmm it must be slugs.
Went home and had a bath in Detol“Self employment the cure to all illnesses”

These three documents may be of interest to all parties and would be advisable to study them in light of the future NVQ etc

Also cleared some gunge from the small drain channelthat runs into the sump at the back. Intermittant pump operation could also be a cause.
PS. Although you got it correct in your thread title ‘tripping’ I think you are nearer the truth in your post when you spell it triping an apt description of the quality of a lot of current machines. 😆
No man I was tripping after a joint 😆 😆
