Carbon Mike?, this one had gold plated tracks, but yes they were a bit “grubby”

Update. May be of use.
My suspicions were correct, the timer/selector switch was faulty. Stripped it down but could not see any problems, gears all ok. sync.motor OK

When I started this subject of, you will see that that I pointed out that this one call was lost to me, the “Guy” had pointed out that he had found me in Yellow pages. Presumably if he had not recieved info on repairs to his appliance, he would have used the Yellow P to ask me to do the repair. Lost income. Its not that big a problem for me, as I have enough work to keep the wolves from the door, but I worry that to much public info. will in the long term be detremental to one man bands. If I lost work for one day a week, then I would worry (although it would give me good reason to be on the golf course) For larger companies 8-10 jobs a day is not as harmfull.

DIY…………. “A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing”. A competent person should be able to work things out. Anyone can learn to change a spark plug on a car, but that does not make them mechanics.
We all have seen DIYers (Destroy It Youself) have a go at repairs, when we get called in to sort out the mess we find simple things, like poorly fitted plug tops, wiring the wrong way round, earth wires loose.etcWe cannot judge of the competence of people who log onto UK /W, even if they are asking the “right” questions technicaly. But from experience some DIYers are very good, others we just stand back and shake our heads at.
Should we ask Joe public what there experience is when they log on and ask questions? My first call today was to Zany W/M. The guys is there and tells me the “drum aint going round”. A quick check on spin, and I hear the motor screeming up to speed, no belt connected, thrown off. A quick check of the inner drum confirmed the obvious, bearing failure.
Anyway to justify the call out I proceeded to split the cabinet.
When I took out the plastic plugs to get at the lower side screws, the guy says, Oh thats how you get them out I have been trying allen keys and all sorts to get into it. Obviously he had been trying to have a go himself. So I asked him what he did for a living, he replied that he was a stone waller (wall builder) “A little information” as I said.Oh I forgot to mention the 13A plug had been changed and had the earth wire hanging out. 😳 ” There rests my case”

Thanks Bryan
I had already read those posts, got the opinion that most of us dont want our hard earned technicle advice spread about to much.
I leart the hard way. I got a service call a few years back by a guy that I knew. Hotpoint W/M .motor brushes gone. The guy is standing over me, having a crack etc. and starts asking a few questions. “Thats a fancy tool you got there for taking the brushes out, what the usuall problems with this washer? etc etc. Next question, do you make a living out if this job, do you advertise much. Just casuall questions nothing to specific.
Two weeks later he has an advert in the local paper, “Domestic Appliance Repairs”
This guy was an odd job man, bit of taxi work, busdriving. suddenly he’s an engineer!!!!, and I had been giving him advice,”DUMBER AND DUMBER” 😳 😳 😳 😳When I read his Add. I grabbed the car keys and was making my out the door to pay him a visit as us Vikings do, the wife threatened that she would ring the Police if I drove off. Common sense prevailed. Got my own back a few times with the assistance of Trading Standards over his shoddy, unsafe work.
The point here is that I live in a rural area where work is hard found, I dont object to fair competition, but to have some cowboy just jump in and have a go is not on. Fortunatly he has not affected me at all. As things are in this trade we should be carefull what we let be known to anyone, I have worked hard to be as competent as I am, and aim to stay that way.

ParticipantRe: Bosch T/drier Heater – New Heaters Faulty?
Greg, I have had them off Parts Center and they are miss-shaped.
Bit crude, but lie the element on the ground and gently stand on it to flaten it out a bit, I do this to every one I fit as they all seems to catch the drum if you dont.
Similar problem with some of the Hotpoint F/L elements, they are to wide for the opening, sqeeze them up a bit. Hotpoint are buying parts from anywhere now and the quality is a bit lacking.

Thats what they are up to, overprice parts, customers dont want repairs done, consequently HP dont have to stock to many old parts. 😥
This thread has outlined that there seems to be a lot of affection for the old Hotpoint.
I have many customers who still have the old Top loader and are discusted at what HP are up to. I sold a new T/L to a customer just before they went out of production and promised that the spares would be avilable for 10 years, she has had to scrap it because it wanted a power unit. Her comments,
” I have had Hotpoints for over 40 years, if this is what they are up to I will buy another make”.
I wonder if HP know or care that they are shooting themselves in the foot. If HP watch Uk Whitegoods they must have picked up on the discontent, both customers and engineers. Well done Merloni, live of a one time excellent company, then screw it up. 😳Heavens this sounds like I am a PR man.!!!! If I was one for HP, I would be worried. 😥

Fitted the first one, tested machine, corbin clip shot off, no grip on the plastic. . It will be a good idea to “roughen ” the surface so as the flex drive gets a bit of grip. I learnt a long time ago to stand back when testing the pump, dented shins and all that. 😳
I can understand what HP are up to, they have made an awfull lot of spares obsolite for the top loader and twin tubs, but have probably realised that some of these are only 7 years old, so parts will be requested. They will have done away with the manufacturing plant so they will have to buy in. 😳
When I worked for them we were advising customers that spares would be available for ten years, after production stopped on any model. I checked with them and they tell me they never had such a policy. I am sure that it used to be advertised in the sales brochures.
