At first glance, your photo looks like a duck swimming in a lake with a toy lighthouse stuck on its back. Should have gone to Specsavers…

ParticipantRe: Magnetic Motors
The clue could well be in the comment by Bobokines, that in its unenergised state, the rotor will be much easier to turn one way than the other. Remember the tiny synchronous motors used to drive the timer on early Hoover 1100 washing machines. The timer had two motors , on clockwise, and one anticlockwise. These two motors were identical, except for direction oc rotation. The difference was in the tiny plastic ratchet device fitted to the rotor, allowing it to turn one way only. Now bearing in mind that the starting torque on these motors is feeble, it will fail to start in the hard to turn direction, but will start in the opposite direction on the next half cycle. Next time you change one, take the old one apart and see if I am right.

ParticipantRe: Van signwriting
There has been previous discussion on this topic. This is what works for me. look around at vehicles as you drive around. I saw one today. A riot of colours and shapes. Then in some almost illegible gothic script it said something like ” Blaablaa Assocciates, a member of the Smegma group” Not even a phone number. It goes to great lengths to tell us absolutely nothing. My preference?
1 Choose ONE colour that contrasts well with van colour
2 Choose the plainest simplest script you can find
3 Use a maximum of two letter sizes.
4 THe most important item is your phone number
5 pay particular attention to the rear of the vehicle. This is the bit that gets read the most.
6 Remember KISS. Keep It Simle, Stupid.
It works for me.neptune

Hi kwatt, I take onboard what you say about money and energy. It is no coincidence that the ultimate unit of energy is called the Petrodollar. I too think fuel cells are interesting, and I feel they will have a part to play in our future. The downside is in the name. FUEL-cell. If this works, and we shall soon know, it is different because it uses no fuel. This is tapping a new source of energy, and we do not know anything about its scale. If, as I suspect, the output is proportional to the volume, a 2metre pyramid will give 8 times the power of a 1metre job. Even if it proves incapable of further devellopment, in the third world, it could run a light or a small radio 24/7. Radio=education. I bought my steel today for the frame, and will start building, probably at the week end, unless it is proved to work in the meantime. It is a lot easy to do nothing than to have a go, even if the results are often the same…

It worries me when people talk about the life of riley. Would that be the life of Mavis Riley on Coronation Street?

Kwatt says you would need an awful lot to generate anything worthwhile, and I agree. But that is a bit like looking at the Wright brothers 1903 aeroplane, and asking how 200 people are going to fly the atlantic in that.Great oaks from little acorns grow. This is an acorn. Dont forget ther are numerous large cash prizes for the first guy to generate ONE watt out or thin air. We must learn to see things not for what they are but what they might become.
Meanwhile, anyone know of a cheap semi- detached house, south facing, with a pyramid shaped roof?

OK so I suppose that you have to be of a certain age to appreciate the Eagles. My favourite song of all time is “Lyin Eyes”. It always reminds me of the days when I was in a local band, and on agood day when the arthritis is not too bad I could still play the lead guitar part. Also brings back memories of the parties around a camp fire in the woods, the motorcycles parked in a cirle like “WAGGON TRAIN”. Two or three accoustic guitars, plenty of boose, sing till dawn, and sleep it off all day sunday. Oh mis-spent youth…

ParticipantRe: I’ll Brave The Eagles Debate
Just bought the CD. I heard the “How Long” track on Radio 2 and knew I had to buy it. This is the only track I have really listened to so far, and what I think of it is hard to put into words. That old county rock beat, some of the guitar riffs are remeniscent of “Take it Easy”. Simple Chord progressions, haunting harmony, if it doesnt bring tears to your eyes, get checked out to see if your already dead. The transcendental magic still lives…

ParticipantRe: Family Tree Puzzle
Thanks for the replies. When you look at it like that , it makes sense. A few years ago, I did some work on my family tree. I have 5 siblings. My mother was one of 14 children. The Earliest ancestor I was able to trace was 7 generations back. If we make a conservative estimate that there were 6 children in each generation, just think how many people alive today ars deccended from that one guy.6x6x6x6x6x6x6. or279936.You would need quite a big hall to invite them to a party!
