    Hi,
Thermocouple is a device which is connected to the thermostat and the burner. When heated (usually a few seconds) it will hold the thermostat in an “open” or “operating” position. If it fails, the thermostat will not operate (ie no flame) or partial flame if failing. It is an essential safety device.

Almost certainly a thermocouple fault not allowing the thermostat to operate correctly. You MUST get a CORGI qualified engineer to deal with this – check Directories or Repairs at for a suitable UKW engineer in your area. If no joy, please post your post code in the thread and we’ll see what we can find for you.

FFS, I only went to the pub for an hour……. The Latin thread came to nought, Martin’s new car was a bit of a diversion but what happens? Penguin abuse…..

So, I WAS going to go to Cornwall for a week on Sunday, but North Wales has certain attractions and I do have a whole seven days……

Given that it’s a very small Penguin, and this is the internet after all, it’s going to end up with someone on the C.A.R. (Chick Abuse Register).

Can we stop this for a while? Please?

    Re: Any Ladies Present?

Interesting – I’m a cartographer by training (anybody want a map?), but yes Bsc (Cantab) 2nd class Hons (don’t spend first and second year drunk) so, am I an engineer? Not technically…..

These days, we dismiss company engineers as fitters. An unfortunate turn of phrase really; back in Victorian times, that is exactly what fitters did – made the early mass produced parts fit together to make the machine work. An extremely skilled, largely intuitive task.

Bodgers? We toss that one about quite freely – also out of context. Bodgers were wood workers who used a sapling powered wood lathe to make all sorts of wooden artifacts from the year dot up to the 18th century.

Then we have Technician. I would suspect that this means we can fit new parts correctly, make value judgements about the condition of parts in danger of failure and analyse problems from the Company data sheets. Is the intuition still there amongst this new breed?

For myself, I have learnt how to recover worn drum shafts and bearing housings, repair innumerable commutator motors, do board level repairs on digital control boards, fix timers and God knows what else. On top of that I’m a world authority on the Austin 1800 and its variants ( 😯 )…… So, yes, I think I’m an engineer – just the wrong degree!

Experience is everything when you get down to it.

Oh, and as a by the way, Julia (the Mrs) once did a 95 Hotpoint spider and bearing in 35 minutes. I wish I could still persuade her to go out to work……….

Bit surpised at that Martin – generally a far better product than the usual Askolls and Coprecis; and it reflects in the price!

    What’s happened to you?

Typical Big Company attitude – won’t admit there’s a problem, just quietly change the product – is it still 1600474 or is there another part number?

    Re: hotpoint armatures

Surprising Simon – I stopped using 1600474’s about 18 months back as the composition of the holders changed and the damned things melted in no time – even on new armatures. Stayed with 161460’s ever since with no problems.

Better still, ring the paper – see if you can get them to move it – then it’s a triumph for them as well as us.

    Love it……..

Re: Whirlpool AWG 329 washer dryer

    BM,
It’ll almost certainly be a module fault. Door lock function is through the timer direct, everything else is via the digiboard. If there is a component or function fault the timer will advance through the programme to the “spanner” position and tell you there is a fault.

    It is a SMEG in a skirt, module from Whirlpool is 4812 282 18679 @ £72.61 list.

    Cheers,
    Chris.

Re: Bendix BDW 53 Dishwasher – access to drain pump???

    Conor,
If you have removed the cover in the sump, you will notice that there are two impellors – one is for circulation, the other for drain. If you follow the channels, you can work out the flow paths. Personally, I’d pull the motor anyway in order to check the condition of the shaft.

The other possibility (as I have found to my cost) is that the motor simply doesn’t get up to speed when running in reverse – new motor time. Not too bad, it’s under £60 from memory.

And yes, the programmes start with a drain sequence.

    Chris.
