    Re: An Age Thing.

Nice suit Goatboy but it looks a bit hazardous standing in a doorway drinking a cuppa when assorted reprobates are going in and out.

The number you give does not appear to be the model number. Typically you will pay £200+ for the part and perhaps £40 to £50 labour.

The only trouble is, if you right click on the picture nothing happens, I wanted to save it so it could be printed and framed 8)

Toddlers will be able to find dangerous situations no matter how many safeguards are put in place. This case is tragic but fortunately very rare and it would be well OTT to change the specification of appliances to prevent its recurrence. It would be like making a decree that everyone live in bungalows because a toddler falls from the window of a high rise block.

That’s interesting. A local electrical shop that sells Hotpoint appliances but does not offer repairs recently bought a new Transit Connect van. They have a photo of a Hotpoint washing machine on the van and apparently Hotpoint sent them that to decorate the vehicle.

See your inbox. I think my motor would fit but it looks like you will need to juggle the plug spades as mine is a later type plug.

Re: Advice please on stand-alone cookers

I don’t do gas so can’t comment on that. Fan ovens probably do cook a bit more evenly but the elements (not the fans) do seem to have a more limited life. Grills are often controlled by a simmerstat the same as an electric hob ring. This does not work too well as a small reduction from full gives a big increase in cooking time. Some share a thermostat with an oven but again, not very good as things stop cooking during the off phases. The distance from the element does seem the best form of control and you will find the cheaper Creda cookers suffer from only having one fixed height for the grill pan.

The people to ask are Hotpoint. They may regard it as a bit of free advertising or they may consider you to be a rival repairer.

I also tried one of those big bright torches but I also gave up on it as you can’t get a day’s sporadic use out of a charge. I now use a Freeplay wind up torch which only needs charging once or twice a week (the wind up facility is for emergency use and it is best never to let it get that low). The trouble is it does not have a magnet or clip to attach it anywhere and it has no flat faces to sit it down on.

The power of socks! I did a Tricity Bendix with a seized drum this week. It was the sort where you have to lift the Zanussi type drum out of the top so it takes about 3 times as long to do as a proper Zanussi. I had expected bearing failure but it was just a nylon sock caught on the front of the inner drum. It had been rubbing against the outer drum when spinning, melted the front face of the outer drum and the whole lot had welded together when the spin finished.

Another tip, when you sling an old motor, hang onto the tacho coil 😉

We are all free to take on board or reject advice according to our own judgement so I can’t see a problem. I realise that advising the public is a different matter as we have no way to tell what aptitude Joe Public has for the job in hand.

On the face of it, it sounds impossible to suffocate in a tumble drier but perhaps the child was smothered by the kitten.
