    Re: After 6pm calls

I’m in the same situation as Toni. I live in a low population area so can’t afford to pick and choose what jobs to take on. The unsociable hours part of the job I hate most is answering customer phone calls at 9.30 on a Sunday night. 😡

Yes, the filter might be clean when you visit but that may be the only time they ever bother to clean it. People don’t seem to realise that clean filters mean the washing dries quicker and it therefore costs less in electricity (as well as improved reliability).

    Re: Hotpoint DC26 Slimline D/W

Thanks for the help, gents. Fault was intermittent so I don’t think it was down to solidified food residue. The motor felt OK when turned by hand and the appliance is only 2 years old so should not be worn out. It is back together and working fine now.

Martins oven stand might be handy for doing older type dishwashers if it had a big hole in the table top. You could also have a shallow drip tray in the base and use it for tracing D/W leaks. 🙂

£20 for parts? If you include the spider, I can’t get them that cheap paying trade prices. The spider quite often does also need to be changed as it gets damaged by bits of broken bearing. 😕

Round here you just leave it outside, ring the Council and they take it away. 😉

You need to try a few programmes and see what happens. If memory serves me correctly, you can drain the machine by holding the cancel button in if it fails to complete a cycle. Pressure switch failure is very rare but the numbering of contacts is fairly universal, even if the layout of them varies.

    Re: WMA Bearing Seal

Thanks folks. I change the bearings themselves rather than the half drum. I dread to think what I would have to charge if I fitted a new half drum, new spider and new spider screws. I suppose in such cases it would be cheaper for the customer to get Hotpoint in and have the spares on the 5 year parts warranty.

Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

I would still rather deal with private individuals than companies though. Yesterday I was given a pile of keys and told to go to a block of flats and plumb in 5 washing machines that were already in the flats. When I got there I could not identify the building as its name / number was not marked, none of the flat numbers were marked so I had to just keep trying keys in doors until one fitted. Of the 5 machines only one turned out to be in full working order and only 2 came with inlet hoses. I did what repairs I could in the time available but will have to go back with spares. 😡

Re: What’s the nicest things customers say or do?

I suppose the thing I appreciate most from customers is when they recommend me to their friends and family. I also enjoy the hospitality of old ladies with their tea and home baking, although I notice they usually only produce this when they’ve paid the bill (they don’t want to be charged for my tea drinking time). Since I relocated to Scotland most of my friends are people I got to know as customers.

Have you checked for earth leakage as well as continuity on the heater? Does the fault code show at the start of filling, when filling is complete or at some other stage?

Re: replacement dual element for fan oven

Grease builds up on elements that are not used, especially if the oven is used for roasting. I suppose the fire may have damaged the oven thermostat, wiring etc.

    Re: Heavy Lifting

Thanks Martin, the only snag with your method is that the appliance would end up in the van on its side, which can damage certain models if the transit screws are not in place. If it’s a dishwasher you also end up with a flooded van 🙄
