    Re: old Ariston Margherita AV838C

I have found with Ariston / Indesit machines you get get 2 similar machines, even down to the same model number, that are constructed totally differently. It would not therefore surprise me if one AV838C had a filter and the next one off the production line didn’t. A chap who worked on the Morris Marina production line told me they once made a car with 2 doors on one side and one on the other, nobody noticed until the car was complete 😯

Thanks for all the advice gents. I have removed the panel complete with motor and fan. The noisy operation turns out to be the rear bearing pads worn to nothing and the drum has worn the flange of the back panel down to foil thickness. I will give the customer the option of a new panel + bearing pads but the likely outcome is another scrapped 2 year old appliance. 🙁

    Re: Hotpoint WMA31P motor

These machines usually have the FHP motor so if that’s what the new one is it is probably correct. The difference in tacho resistance should not prevent it from working so I would look for something more fundamental, like worn out brushes. If you can identify which terminals are for brushes and field coil windings it is possible to test the motor using a mains cable and a wire link. The mains cable goes to one brush and one field coil terminal, the wire link joins the remaining brush to the remaining field terminal. Turn on the mains and the motor goes straight to full spin sped.

I can’t say that this corresponds with my experience of Merloni machines although I have not had that much to do with the computerised models. A friend has a 15 year old Ariston which is still going strong and I have sold several recon. Indesits which have also lasted well.

The fan has the sort of notched spring clip as used to hold microswitches onto interlocks (eg Hoover). I suppose this might be in addition to a thread as the rear of the fan is a large hexagon, although the blades get in the way of putting a spanner on this.

It seems a little harsh to say the machine has only lasted 2 years when the fault is relatively simple and cheap to rectify. Would you take a 2 year old car to the crusher if the central locking went wrong?

Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

Most people keep their houses warmer than I keep my own (mine is set at 20C) so I tend to take off any jumper or fleece I’m wearing when I go to jobs at houses. This is not ideal on days when it’s about -8 outside and you find the appliance is in a shed or garage. Something I’ve noticed is generally the larger the house the more cramped your working conditions for repairing the washing machine / tumble drier.

When you are pulling out the machine and they say “Don’t worry about the lino”, are they being sincere or ironic?

    Re: Weird Part Price’s

I find I tend to partly absorb the rip-off prices myself by only adding a small amount for profit. If I pay £4 for a fan oven element I will cheerfully charge £22 for it but if I have to pay £32 for an almost identical element I will probably only charge £37 for it. My latest shock was a main oven thermostat for a Servis cooker, £82 trade, £111 retail!

    Re: Recon Motors

I hope they are better than the Homespares ones. Most of the Zanussi motors I have had from Homespares have been returned due to noisy bearings, lack of power, damaged pulley, etc. etc. They have now stopped giving a guarantee with them so I won’t be using them.

Interesting, I was after one of those today. Electrue want £12.99 for one. They do a pattern version but it’s out of stock.
