    Re: Whirlpool Commercial Toploader

I’m now thinking it was the clutch that was slipping. I took the clutch spring out and stretched it a bit with pliers. The drum is now turning, although I’m not sure if it’s fast enough as it looks quite slow when I lift the lid.

    Re: Whirlpool Commercial Toploader

Thanks for the replies. I found several videos on YouTube showing repairs to these and similar American machines so I now have the thing totally in bits. The motor coupling is fine and when you turn the gearbox part of the coupling one way you get agitation motion of the inner output shaft, the other direction seems to give spinning of the outer output sleeve but that was without it all assembled. I’m hoping the problem was the drum slipping on the drive hub / clamp.

Looks like I can’t edit my post as I had only given the model number off the fascia. It’s actually AWM9000 8570 084 15002.
According to Masterpart the boards are 481221479825, 481221479827 and 481221479772.

At the risk of going “on topic” I was away in Hungary buying a house there. I’m back for a short while before I start moving my goods & chattels (not sure how you distinguish between a good and a chattel but they will all be taken in the same van anyway) over there and getting my cottage in Scotland ready to rent out.

Not everyone has the aptitude to run a business, no matter how good they are at the technical stuff. For one thing you have to be more disciplined in your control of money. One of the most common failings is that people look at the weeks takings and think of it as their money. Some of it is theirs but a lot of it is needed for paying the spares suppliers and other bills.
There are plenty of worries with the job but I’ve always found it satisfying to know that I’m genuinely earning my living and not being “carried” as can happen in a big company. Years ago I knew a bloke who worked on permanent nights at Massey Ferguson and boasted that he slept through most of his shifts. I would have been wracked with guilt if I had treated my employer with such contempt.

Yes, my Talktalk broadband has been very poor for the last few months. At one point I had no connection for about 12 hours. I thought there was a fault with my equipment but it suddenly just came back on. I briefly lose connection about 3 times a day and I only get fast enough broadband to watch Utube videos at certain times of the day like 7 – 8 am.

I just looked up prices for the module, Masterpart want £58.27 + VAT but no stock, Connect are asking £96 + VAT but have it in stock :rolls:

    Re: Argos unbranded

I have an unbranded GDA washing machine in the workshop right now for a spider change. At first glance it’s a Creda clone of a Hotpoint WM sixty something but there are subtle differences. I managed to damage the plastic fascia when trying to get it off as it’s attached differently to the Hotpoint type. 😥

    Re: Impatient customer

If people are unreasonable it is usually best to refuse the job. If everyone they ring does the same they might eventually start being a bit more respectful. I had a bloke banging on my door at 7.30 yesterday morning demanding to know what’s happening about his oven. This is in a house that is about to be rented out and the new tenant has noticed the oven door won’t stay fully shut. I told him I’ve not yet been able to find a source of new hinges for the Academy brand oven. He was then wanting me to go out looking for a new oven that would fit. I was polite enough but I sent him on his way. I won’t get paid for the job but that’s no big deal.

I started about 1997 and have always been just a sole trader working from home. When I started there was a lot more competition but most of the others have moved into other types of business over the years. One bloke who had a shop selling recon. appliances makes and fits blinds, another pair of brothers now do joinery and building, others have retired.
My own intention is to retire abroad, although I’m only 50. Both my parents died within the last couple of years and I inherit a half share of their house, which is now up for sale. The current plan is to buy a cheap house in Hungary to live in, rent out my cottage in Scotland, buy an additional property in Germany as a buy-to-let and use the 2 lots of rental income to live on. Hungary has warmer weather and lower cost of living than UK.

I will be giving it up as a bad job in the next few months as I don’t see much of a future for this trade. 🙁

I mostly use Masterpart but if they don’t do it I will try Connect or Homespares. I’m stuck at the moment though, I need a pair of hinges for an Academy brand oven and I can’t find anyone who does them. 😕

Yes, I had the same with Europart so I took the hint and do not now take the liberty of ordering spares from them. 😉

The customer is right, the machine is no good. The repair is easy enough but the bearing will fail again in a couple of years. I only change the felts if the old ones are in bad condition, they are usually OK.

Last week I went to a big cast iron imitation wood burning stove type electric heater. It had blown the fuse and one of the bulbs had broken off in its holder. The 2 bulbs on this face each other and there was not enough room to get in with pliers without unclipping the holder and rotating it 90 degrees. When I did this 3 of the 4 push in wires came out of the holder, resulting in a total strip down job to poke them back in 👿 I eventually got it all back together and the lights now worked. On Saturday I got a call asking me to go back. Apparently the flame effect was not right, all the flames were in the centre of the fire and nothing at the sides. I said I would pop in and take another look when in the area. I knew the lady in question does not go out much so I should be able to catch her in soon enough. This was not good enough for her and she insisted I make an appointment to go back. I therefore had to use diesel, driving the 15 mile round trip just to fix her flame effect. This turned out to be a sheet of translucent plastic that was in back to front, I suppose there must be a diffraction grid on one side.
