I had also heard of a slim Zanussi machine but when I saw it I found it was an FL1081, which I would have thought was a full size model. A friend had a very small kitchen and was fitting reduced depth units, worktops etc. If all else fails you may be able to dismantle a new Zanussi and rebuild it inside the boat 😉

I also get asked what machine to buy but I find it difficult to keep abreast of changes in the designs as I don’t do warranty work so the machines I see are mostly at least 3 years old. I have been suggesting Zanussi to people, based on my experience with Nexus etc. but perhaps the current ones are a totally different proposition? 😕

I went armed with an EMW leaflet on Last Error codes but it tells you to look at the Final Spin LED and the WMA12 does not have one.

Re: WMA PCBs,ANY CLUES TO BLOWN TRACKS OR ICs ?????????????

They are a nightmare, although the faulty ones I’ve been to have not had any visible damage. I went to a WMA12 last week, symptoms were door unlocking and door light flashing every 5 minutes through the wash. I changed the interlock and thought that had cured it. Next day, called back, same symptoms. Fit recon. board (not EMW), try it on a spin but it just agitates for 14 minutes, no spin. Try a B programme and it stops filling after about 3 seconds and proceeds to do the wash with about half a pint of water. Try it on a D wash and it fills normally. Sent original board to repairer to see if they can do any better job curing the interlock activation fault but they left me a message this afternoon to say they can’t repair it. 👿

Re: Has the baby been thrown out with the washwater?

The thing I find frustrating with some modern computerised machines is you can’t change the programme once the machine has filled. With older designs, if you wanted more water you could turn the dial to a rinse or a wool wash, let it finish filling then return it to your desired programme. Similarly, if you wanted it to fill with domestic hot water on a 40 degree wash you could fill up on the 95 degree setting then move it straight to 40 degrees. If you try such tricks on a newer machine it will most likely empty out and start filling from scratch on the new programme.

For a couple of years I hung on to an immaculate 70s type Hotpoint AFL, the sort with the purple knobs, hoping to offer it to some TV or film company making a period drama but as with most things it ended up getting scrapped. I once saw a similar machine with a green marble effect finish. I don’t know if this was a standard finish or had the owner expertly covered it with fablon?

I only use the laminated brushes on 1200 spin machines as I’ve had a lot of them split down the middle. I also noticed they had changed the casing material but I’ve not seen any of these melt yet. I wonder if it would be worth keeping some of the old white cases and fitting them with the loose carbons available from Homespare or Electrue?

The repair guys will also test your timer for a small fee. 70 Meg is pretty good for heater insulation.

Have you checked the plumbing to make sure water is getting in and out OK? It’s not the old trick of plugging the waste hose onto a sink trap fitting thats brand new and sealed at the end?

This timer is not on their list but it would be worth giving Re’Lectronics a ring to see if they can repair the timer: Tel. 01604 639792

    Re: hotpoint armatures

I’ve fitted every permutation of armature / motor combination over the years and never had any comeback. It is important to swap over the tacho magnets though. I suppose it was inevitable that Merloni would drop the armature option as they never offered this on the Indesco motors. I’ve never tried the Qualtex armatures, I had enough trouble with their Hotpoint brushes before I started only buying genuine ones.
