ParticipantIt beggars belief doesn’t it? i once got a call from the police on a Sunday morning, accused me of stealing items from a customers home, the police said the items were of an appliance nature, some kind of spares for a washing machine??? anyway i was totally dumbfounded? i demanded to know exactly what spares were stolen? they pressed the customer for an exact description and guess what? screws!! anyway this customer got a bee in his bonnet about the fact his indesit washing machine could not be repaired without a drum change, i took off the screws from the back and put them in my pocket and put one screw back on, he then inspected the machine himself afterwards and noticed a few screws missing, at that point he got onto the police and reported id stolen his property from his house, eventually an agreement was reached between the police, customer and myself that the screws would be returned… the problem for myself was knowing which screws was his, i had a pocket full of them collected over the week…… he drove miles over to my place to collect them?

ParticipantRe: Fixed Cost Repairs Are Dead
it all depends on what business model is being used and what type of work it is, private- sub contract etc, what type of customer is being targeted!, the catchment area is very important, population, theirs quiet a few variables to go into that model to make it work
customer perception on the type of job is also is a variable, they sometimes choose fixed rate over parts and labour if they think they can get a better upfront cost.
job filtering with good experienced customer care is essential coupled with sales with fixed rate repairs….
and more importantly than anything else no matter what way a business charges is the rise of the internet and how its influenced consumers decisions, were getting a lot of stripped down machines with half done jobs and yes ‘it does look easy on youtube!’ …. after turning up first thing to check, pull out the plug, lol 😆

ParticipantRe: Which cordless screwdriver?
pbsa 12 b1 or similar model
this is the best thing since sliced bread! it has a quick push on chuck for drilling that can be left in the tool bag with drill bit intact at the ready, iv had one for approx 2-3years dropped it dozens of times its lightweight and powerful its relentless! full range of torque settings, fast charge as well, and would you believe it was £30 quid from lidl !!
the only snag is they only sell them when they feel like it so their not always available if anyone wants one im not sure if they sell online.
good german tool

ParticipantRe: any advice on attracting new work?
Thanks Bryan, yes I’ve took your advice and took the plunge back in, I stopped dishwashers mainly built in but if restarted this and took some refrigeration repairs but I have little systems training so sticking to what’s possible but I’m considering looking at private courses for that, and Im not sure about gas safe for gas cookers only due to the investment in time and money, boiler breakdowns interest me but maybe the grass is greener?
