ParticipantRe: Is it legal to fit 13amp sockets
Going back 10years ago when i was working for BG we did a weeks training in home electrical, at the time a minors works certificate had to be written out after small home electrical repairs, that was before part p arrived so im not sure if things have changed? …. 1.can anyone clarify what electrical repairs to a customers home us appliance engineers are allowed to do with being competent electrical engineers? and 2. i take it part P is the new code of practice that has to be followed?… iv seen a course advertised for part P competence, but i take it thats not mandatory in proving competence?

Before i forget he also has a practical examination of some type, with no indication of how in-depth this may be with regards to fault finding etc?

ParticipantRe: Fixed price repairs
We went over to fixed price repairs must be 7 years ago, we loose out on smaller jobs sometimes as people anticipate it will be a small cost, say door handles etc, but we are busy most times, its swings and roundabouts with repairs as some require no parts and some may be an expensive part and profit is only £30, we no longer go out to bearing jobs and we don’t charge callout if its completely beyond economical repair, sometimes BER is a little unfair on some customers as we no longer attempt time consuming repairs but the repair industry as a whole is testing at the moment so some compromises must be made….

ParticipantRe: tricity bendix wdr1041w no dryer heat
ok an update, went back on the job today and checked the wiring on the bottom thermistor on the hose and replaced it anyway.
just to clarify standing from the front looking at the top of the machine their are 3 stats.
the red rest stat is fine.
in close proximity to the reset stat is another bigger stat and also is closed ok and finethe third stat that is positioned closer to the front of the machine that sits on the top of the air inlet that goes to the top of the door seal is open? its a bigger circular stat.
so the clarify this stat is open circuit. should this be N/O normally open.should all 3 stats that are on the top of the machine be closed?
thanks again

ParticipantRe: tricity bendix wdr1041w no dryer heat
Thanks Steve…. yes both safety red and thermal limiter stat are closed so their fine.
i think i remember having a problem with a thermistor at the bottom once, am i right in thinking its the one with access at the base of the machine access by splitting the cabinet? i can’t remember if you can gain access by leaning back the machine and getting under… might be would it be worth taking a replacement thermistor along maybe…
thanks again steve

ParticipantRe: Advice needed
over the years iv tried and tested different ways of reminding people…
if possible get the money with a day or two the reason is at this point the customer or landlord has just been relieved of the stress of a broken appliance with a nagging tenant etc and their more likely to pay as at this point they have appreciation in mind, leave it a week before billing and its all forgot about( for single jobs not contract)
“a speedy payment is always well received and appreciated!, thank-you”
the above for some reason this works a treat at the end of a text or email gets same day payments by bacs

ParticipantRe: Masterpart….or Amazon?
interesting thread…. i quote “Fitting a part such as a grill element on a cooker, is what 15 screws and a few cables pulled off and placed back. How many here fit a part to a product they have never seen before and really had any difficulty”
… as my trainer once said “its all easy when you know”… i’m currently training my son(hes not sure on his career path so i want him to have a fall back) he has 6gcse’s and a diploma(mostly unrelated building services with some electrical) he’s very keen to learn and one thing that stood out from my first shot at training someone is how difficult this job is to learn!… take the grill element… watched him on first attempt get all wires wrong way around on fitting, the connection were slack and he attempted to tighten and could not get them on as too tight etc etc.. it brought the high initial learning curve all back to me, ….so it got me thinking about people who order from ebay they must be pretty confident diy type people who are going to read up on the task in hand first with correct id of the parts etc… this job is defiantly a skilled trade! multi branded with all kitchen appliances, you must be joking its an easy job!, take removing an integrated dishwasher and striping it down finding the fault then repair then re-install …. i had a general surgeon comment on how he was curious about how one learns the skill as it seemed daunting, he could not diagnose a pcb fault… and who would expect him to be able to?

ParticipantRe: Is it just me or is anyone else quiet?
i agree mostly and interesting about the link between sales and repairs… i really don’t fully understand why the down trend, my theory on self repairs can only go so far as some repairs are complex, would be nice to analyse the trend correctly and how long it will last or if its a permanent shift in consumer behavior and why, something is influencing the customers to not seek out a repairer, if their not buying new? then what are they doing? hand washing and cooking on a camp fire, lol… i don’t take a look on the public forums of ukwhitegoods but have the enquiries increased i wonder?

ParticipantRe: Is it just me or is anyone else quiet?
i had plenty of work for last 4 years and now for the past 6-8months have taken a steep dip in bookings, my work like most comes from the net, using natural listings(seo good) and google adwords, competition is the same, reviews are fine etc. one thing i have noticed is how many customers have attempted the repair themselves via the internet…. im convinced its not that the customers are replacing the machines its more their repairing them using google, iv repaired the wife’s car using this method myself using youtube etc, i’m sure others are doing the same with appliances…. i think families in general now are struggling to balance the books and dont have expendable income compared to a few years back, this shift iv noticed comes from middle of the road income customers…
