ParticipantRe: What’s happend to the specialist?
God Imagine sitting there waiting for a call to come in for a Hoover Auto ? certainly its a novel idea but far from being a commercially sound business model. These days like Martin says we need to have our wits about us, be multi skilled and multi brand and even then it can be tough going. When I worked for manufacturers service with service calls that were sent to you via computer overnight all ready loaded on to your computer for when you awoke next morning, a fully stocked vanstock and necessary tools I could never imgaine repairing another make of appliance, why where would I start ? No Technical backup, all the pitfalls etc. The thing is when I left that employment I started work with a independent who for the best part of 30 years made a healthy living from repairing Hoover & Hotpoint, Ariston, Etc Washing Machines and Vacuum Cleaners, along with twin tubs and single tubs, No Cookers, No Cooling, No Dishwashers, No Microwave Ovens. That all changed when I arrived as I was able to embrace all of that and slowly the company evolved into being far more multiskilled, so it was a two way street, they were able to educate me on other makes and I was able to educate them in other areas. When Customers phone us they never ask for a specialist but always ask if we can repair their washing machine or whatever. In fact if my memory serves me right if one calls themselves say a Indesit Specialist or any other type of brand specialist is that not sticky ground these days ?

ParticipantRe: New fan elements – half a megohm insulation.
Hydroscopic elements don’t always dry out and it’s not only confined to spares, I can remember installing brand new cookers with excessive earth leakage and even dropping the earth of and running them for hours failed to reduce the reading and the only remedy was to replace the appliances. I have had many instances where heating up elements has dried out the elements and they are fine after that but some just will not dry out.
Like others have said returning them should not be an issue and the time involved messing about with what is a supplier problem may not be cost effective in the end.squadman
ParticipantRe: New fan elements – half a megohm insulation.
I think that storage and type of packing is a factor in such problems and drying or trying to dry out the elements may be possible, that said once their unpacked if it does not cure the problem then returns become difficult, personally I would return them as they may be problematic for you.

ParticipantRe: Energy Efficiency Con
Electric, without a technological step forward and away from fossil fuel generated power, only shifts the problem somewhere else, it solves nothing. Aside from which there’s notably no mention of the production cost in energy terms of the components to “save” this energy nor any mention of the nasty, nasty stuff in the batteries or their lifespan as well as replacement costs.
I am not sure about smoke and mirrors Kwatt but there are serious alternatives to the production of electricity which does not involve wind/solar or steam !
The Energy companies know that both wind and solar generation will not produce any reliable amount of energy and in the case of both for home use it would take many decades to see any return versus investment, with solar thats geographical.
But imagine if you could produce electrical power at home for nothing ! say 25 to 50kwh per day ? Imagine not filling your vehicle with petrol or deisel but water ?
These technologies are with us now and there are people who have and are producing this stuff, there goes a story that a guy by the name if my memory serves me well called Steve Myers an amercian who developed the HHO engine, he developed this technology and presented to the US Military the idea which was so they could power their tank divsions. After a tank was converted and proven to run the US goverment scrapped the whole project, some while after this guy died and evidently it was found that he had a chemical present in his body which a certain goverment department only had access to ?
So it was that at that time the HHO technology was effectively buried like its inventor, trouble was that unknown to the Goverment Mr Myers had registered the HHO Patent at the Patent Office in Washington somer years before and it was there for all to see.
Make of it what you will but there are many examples of inovators who have developed proven energy alternatives only to fade away and its with interest that not one of these inovators have been from any major energy supplier or State. Mm

ParticipantRe: Energy Efficiency Con
My take on this is that none. not one of the political parties or any of the world goverments are remotely interested in saving energy or making our planet greener, it simply would not be in the financial interests of Goverments and the mega energy corporations to go green, its far easier to spoon feed the mass population with the idea that the end is nigh is we all don’t reign in our use of energy and drive green cars.
The technologies are here to produce non carbon based fuels as well as more or less free energy for everyone and although there are many who are already using this stuff if the masses started doing it can you imagine the panic that energy companies would have ? suddenly a huge downturn in people wanting to buy their comodities, with the energy companies not then requiring so much oil ? the goverment with huge tax revenue losses ?
that could be the stuff to cause real problems and thus why there is no serious effort on anyones part to develope and establish real green and non polluting fuels.squadman
ParticipantRe: Insurance Assessments
Like all insurance companies these days they are maintaining stats on their customers i.e those that claim, labour costs of repairers like garages, and most probably appliances in order to maximise their profits and reduce their expsure. Just like cars some makes cost more to repair just as same as whitegoods and in the case of whitegoods more to replace when it is deemed they are unviable to repair. We may see that insurers will either not insure certain brands or more likely increase premiums to their customers to insure them.

ParticipantRe: Who is responsable
If they get stressy about it ask them how mnay times its worked befor going wrong. Any answer other than right away will invalidate an automatic exchange. Largely cos the goods were working and now arent, as opposed to not working from the off. If they then start quoting sales of goods acts, the best response is to offer to call the manufacturer immediately, as they are the only ones who can authorise an immediate uplift of an appliance which hasnt failed on install!
The original question was can the customer request a replacement appliance as the fault developed within the first 28 days ?
First and foremost it has nothing to do with the manufacturer at this point, the contract of sale is between the retailer and consumer. The consumer is entitled to either a repair, replacement or full refund during the first 28 days and if you have managed to circumvent this with your customers then well done ! However if they decided to have none of it and marched you of to the county court that would be a very different matter.
In anycase once you have convinced the customer to have the appliance repaired how can you expect a customer to wait weeks to get it repaired.
If something fails within the first twenty eight days most retailers would replace the appliance i would say and if they would not and then put the customer through hoops waiting for engineers to call and then to have to go away and source parts I would say that is not conducive to ones relationship with your customer.Personally I have in the past uplifted faulty appliances which fail within this period and replaced them and dealt with the suppliers and never had an issue.
” The fact of the matter is that it states clearly in most guarantee cards that a replacement machine will only be authorised after the relevant engineer has inspected it. unquote,
Whats stated in a guarantee card is one thing, whatever it says it has no bearing on consumer law and every such card or indemity I have seen always includes These terms and conditions do not affect your statutory rights !

ParticipantRe: VIRTUAL TERMINAL CARD PAYMENTS
Dont forget that once you setup to handle such payment methods that it must be run by the strict PCI DSS rules, this covers your entire trading environment, all third-party partners that store, process or transmit data must also comply before you can achieve full compliance.
Third parties include:
Resellers Till vendors, EPOS vendors Software application providers Payment service providers Payment ,processing bureaux, Data storage providers, Web hosting providers, Shopping cart providers, Software vendors. Its a minefield for the small business and if you are subject to fraud which as you are probably aware seems to be on the increase on the internet since chip & Pin arrived, there are large fines if it is found that your payment system, data or online security is not properly secured and validated and meets the requirements of PCI DSS.
Big companies and Corporations have dedicated departments that setup such things and continually police them and even they get caught out with fraud.
I am not suggesting that you dont go down this road but if you are not aware of these requirements it may well be an idea to find out and your merchant services would be a good place to enquire. Just because you may use a external payment gateway anyone accepting remote, telephone or over the counter card payments are subject to these rules.
We have recently become fully compliant and used a company recommeded by our merchant service by the name of Security Metrics.squadman
ParticipantRe: Mobile phones
Any network is dependent on coverage and where you plan to use it.

I also have a i phone with o2 so I am well covered when out and about anywhere in the UK as well as abroad.

ParticipantRe: GHD Hair straightners
There is no doubt that as far as GHD are concerned there is an abundance of counterfeit products available both from the actual products as well as spares, However I cannot imagine that Europart or Connect would be supplying such items for obvious reason.

ParticipantRe: Emergency services Limited???
Personally I would have done some backround checks on this before accepting the work, sure we all like extra jobs and it will hopefully be ok for you. I had a friend the other week who was called by a company asking for a boiler repair and that as this company dealt with my company they had a 90 day account with us ! Total B****** of course, he had rang me to confirm if we knew of them. Well I told him that was not the case at all and that we could not recollect doing any work for this company. He called them back and told them that he required a labour charge upfront via card. They said they would need to check if they could do that. After a week he had heard no more so out of idle interest he gave them a call back, yes thats right no answer !! he was glad that he had not invested any time or materials in this one .
