Re: in car sat. nav. units

I have not come across any domestic sat-nav that can utalise OS grid references. I have however used a fair few of the Sat-Navs that are available and I do not include palm type units in my comments.

All have there pro’s and con’s and it depends on what featues you deem as being important. For me however a Sat-Nav needs to be able to get me to where I need to go and bells and whistles are useless if the unit gets you lost or takes you all round the houses. A lot of Sat-Navs like the Navman and Tom Tom as well as others use Windows CE as an operating system and can crash when you least need it ! If you want funny voice instructions and be able to load mp3 files and pictures then these may be what you require.

I prefer a Sat- Nav to have the following features,

    Full seven digit postcode operation,

    Clear mapping

    Clear spoken instructions

    Safety Camera Warnings.

    A stable Operating system.

My choice was therefore the Snooper Indago, great unit running Linux as an OS, clear mapping which uses Navtec mapping as used by the likes of Fed-EX and DHL, clear spoken instructions , Full Postcode Search and Entry, and very good speed camera database Enigma which is maintianed by dedecated staff unlike the hit and miss efforts of some others.

Yes its a CRB check, but the CRB site states that self employed people cannot get a check on themselves. It gets harder to go to work these days with all this redtape.

Does any one know the actual cost of a CRB check ?

Thats good to hear, as you say you know what to root out and of course windows is a messy operating system that I would agree with. I am surprised to hear that you have never had to do a reinstall in 15 years are you still running windows 3.1 ?

Microsoft themselves run Linux on there own servers as do we, that shows you how secure they are with there own server operating systems. Mac OS like Linux is a far cleaner OS without the bloatware of Windows and we have never had a failure with Linux. If there were more standard applications and cross border compatibilty I would swap everthing over to Linux tommorow, sadly thats not the case.

A friend of mine who runs a data recovery company and IT repair business has a fair few punters who have delved into the inner workings of system 32 and other windows areas with registery editors and cleaners and he makes a decent living from their efforts.

As I said I would always advise caution when using this type of tools.

Never used a cleaner on my registery in the last 12 years and unless you know exactly what you are doing with editing or clearing out any of the system files I would advise extreme caution as you may well end up with a computer that will not boot up.

Many files are shared files such as dll files and you would have a hell of a job having deleted a file in the MBR or windows registery to locate a problem is you deleted by mistake.

    Re: TDS OFFLINE

Connections is nothing to do with windows or microsoft, it is an application for looking up parts if you have an account with Connect Distribution which it seems that you do not.

Therefore your problem lies elsewhere, you say that you have copied the files to your hardrive. Are you certain that you requested a full install to that drive where TDS then copies a very large amout of data roughly 300mb of files ?

Are you using any other Acess databases on your system ? either knowingly or unknowingly ?

I had not two days ago had the same problem having just reinstalled my laptop with TDS asking for CD1 to be inserted. This is normally when the installation process has failed. Do you have a screen saver which could have ativated during the lengthy install process or could there be an issue with your power scheme which interupted the process ?

I have installed TDS many times on various systems amd mostly it is trouble free. If you continue to experience problems why not call up the Electrolux TDS tech line and ask them ? That aside TDS is well worth the effort and the money to get running as it is a oracle of info on the complete Electrolux Product range and will save you hours in the long run.

Sorry forgot to say that if you are running vista as your OS you will need to set permissions for each application.

    Re: TDS OFFLINE

TDS can be problematic especially when used with Connections if you have that application also installed. They both use a Microsoft MDB file and they can conflict with each other. If by any chance your OS is Vista then there are extra things you need to do.

Generally TDS is an excellent resource that is a benchmark for how all simliar applications should be written ( Are you listening Merloni ? )

From what you have said when you installed TDS if its requesting CD1 it is probably looking for pdf files contained on that DVD, when you click on try again it searches our DVD drive but cannot find the disk. This is due I think to the fact that you have not installed TDS correctly and the files its looking for have not been copied onto your hardrive.

The remedy for installing TDS if you also have conections installed is this.

    1. Install Connections

    2. Make sure you complete all updates for connections.

    3. Run Connections and test its working as a standalone application.

    4. Install Adobe Reader from the TDS DVD.

    5. Install TDS as described on the DVD booklet.

    6. TDS can have issues with earlier Adobe Reader versions especially version 6. version 7 runs fine and is supplied on that DVD.

If you try and install TDS before Connections you may well have all manner of problems with MDB conflicts and that may even result with TDS being uninstalled without you actually doing so ( weird I know )

If you do not have connections and have no intention of installing it then things are much simpler.

Install Adobe Reader 7 from the disk, then install TDS offline as descirbed.
i.e Go to RUN, type in D:/setup.exe

Select install pdf files to run from your hardisk,

this install is a long one could be over an hour !

copy the TDS to a desktop shortcut and your ready to roll, have fun mate 🙂

ok until they withold their number, we will not take anything in unless we have full contact details which avoids such situations, no matter what kind of hurry they are in and we also take an inspection fee which is fully refundable if the repair goes ahead.

As usual the UK goverment dragging behind run by idiots ! if these people can implement this why cannot we ?

Personally I find that the powers to be are just full of hot air and no do, least wise until Europe crack the penantly whips and we have to cough up a hefty fine, but thats how our politicians work.

As for the Bio Gas idea thats great, just imagine if we could convert all the hot air spurted by the politicians into usable gas ! it would help the enviroment no end.

    Re: Yellow Pages Ad

Its Funny you know we had our Yell rep arrive today. Yep he too is a new face from last year, the year before and the previous years have all brought forth New Faces ! I reckon that it is a deliberate ploy of Yell that you neve see the Rep who dealt with your business the year before.

That said the Yell rep was trying to get us to spend an extra £1500 a year on top of our £ 4,500 already earmarked as budget. We have in previous years had a whole page, a half page, 3/8 column as well as advertsing with the BT book and some local stuff. We have used full colour process in these adverts to varying degrees of success.

It seems that I am not alone in thinking that advertising is a intagable product in that its always difficult to ascertain if a ad will work for you. Generally speaking a lot of peolpe do look in YP for services and we have tried Yell.Com as well.

I would say that when you have water Pixxxxx all over your floor that logging on and surfing Yell is the last thing on your mind, you reach for that big Yellow book and try to find someone who can come now !

This all said I am also wondering about how much one should spend on adverstising in this directory ? Big ad ? Small Ad ? what’s best ? what will bring the most revenue in ? There’s no doubt about it its a subject that we all have a common interest in and we all have experience of this business and should be able to quantify with our experience what YP has done for our business.

Personally I would have to say that YP does bring in work, especailly in areas like ours where there is loads of building going on and new people moving in who would not know of you. We have been trading for forty years and have a loyal customer base, word of mouth, family and Neigbour recomendations, customers moving out of the area, customers dying. Its all ebb and flow, New compeditors starting up !

How will the new influx of people find you ? will they call on on of your compeditors ?

Yeap its a difficult balancing act and some here have bravely given YP the bug heave hoe !

We all want to retain more of our earnings in this difficult trade and its just as difficult to know how far or how far not to go when taking advertsing space especailly and YP rates. Yep our rep has a big flashy motor as well !

    Re: WEEE

I am always proactive in trying to run my business and conform as best I can with any legislation etc. Looking at this lot is a nightmare ! and whilst I agree with the sentimate of this you cannot but wonder how many will implement this not to mention cope !

To date we have had no offical notification from any goverment or local authority department and when I called the local council some weeks back they did’nt know what I was talking about ????

How can the goverment expect us to implement this act with such non exisistent communication and fragmented intent.

At the end of the day the likes of Currys, Argos, Comets and the others have minions who can sit all day and look at this lot, as for us most I think are mere engineers trying to earn a decent living and somehow for those of us that sell applianaces even small numbers we have got to get our heads around this cause it will be easier to bash us than the likes of the multiples.

What about the Jewish Rabi who had the taxman call to view his books ?

At the end of the tax year, the Tax Office sent an inspector to audit the books of a synagogue.

While he was checking the books, he turned to the Rabbi and said, “I notice you buy a lot of candles. What do you do with the candle drippings?”

“Good question,” noted the Rabbi. “We save them up and send them to the candle makers, and every now and then they send us a free box of candles.”

“Oh,” replied the auditor, somewhat disappointed that his unusual question had a practical answer.

But on he went, in his obnoxious way: “What about all these biscuit purchases? What do you do with the crumbs?”

“Ah, yes,” replied the Rabbi, realizing that the inspector was trying to trap him with an unanswerable question. “We collect them and send them back to the manufacturers, and every now and then they send a free box of holy biscuits.”

“I see,” replied the auditor, thinking hard about how he could fluster the know-it-all Rabbi.

“Well, Rabbi,” he went on, “What do you do with all the leftover foreskins from the circumcisions you perform?”

“Here, too, we do not waste,” answered the Rabbi. “What we do is save up all the foreskins and send them to the Tax Office, and about once a year they send us a complete dick.”

Makes you think don;t it 😀
