    Re: Safe contractor scheme

We were doing work for the Local Authority in sheltered accommodation and had been doing this for 25 Years ! then they sold all the accommodation stock to a Private Company and then things started to become involved, First off they wanted Risk assessments for each job, reams of detailed forms to be completed with the onus on us to identify things like asbestos being present in the course of our work on their sites, then shortly after came ISO 9000 & ISO 9001 QA again with reams of paperwork.

We knew we were not going to be able to comply and none of our competitors would be complying either so the Housing Associations costs would spiral to meet these new demands. Yes we lost the work but with some careful thinking and planning replaced the vacuum with other work which was far less bother.

Or 1st time completion ! When I worked in Manufacturers service the required 1st time completion rate was 86{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} which in real day terms was 82{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} for most engineers and that was with one manufacturer and 5 brands with a full decent van stock

Often than not the wires are all the same colours, white for instance so you have to work out which wires are live, Neutral and switched live, as Martin points out it would be all too easy to short the wrong connectors and damaged the Control unit, of course if one had a circuit diagram it could be done.

    Re: stupid electrician

This reminds me of a situtation some while back where I was called to a built in dishwasher. The guy informed me once I arrived that the dishwasher was hardwired into a socket behind the dishwasher. I asked where I could isolate the appliance. He then showed me two wall mounted sockets above the worktop above where the dishwasher was housed.

To get power to the hardwired concealed socket that supplied the dishwasher he produced a JUMP lead with a 13 amp plug fitted at each end !

Having then plugged this death trap in he jumped the power from one outlet to the other this jump lead being about 18 inches in length. Amazed at this I pointed out the error of this installation and made notes on my job sheet. He then told me not to be concerned about this as HE KNEW how to handle this arrangement and that it therefore presented no danger !!! In anycase I needed to remove the dishwasher, he had already removed the plinth and the lower plate cover from the dishwasher before I arrived. I told him I wanted it unplugged and that I would not be touching it, looking at me as if I were some idiot he removed the left hand plug, before I could say anything he had contacted the pins of the plug which were still powered up from the other socket and got a nasty bolt ! I switched the switch off on the other socket and he was jumping around the kitchen holding his hand in pain !

I said now you know why I wasnt going to touch it and why I tried to explain the potential for injury or death. Thing is this guy was a copper and really you could’nt imagine anything more stupid !

Your right mate, the point here is that Merchant Rates differ vastly dependent on turnover and percentage of cards processed. I have both a fully fledge merchant account with thousands of transactions and also use the Zinc Pay for another venture. Both have their place and for someone just starting out or dipping thier toes its a good solution In my opinion

Worldpay Zinc, its the only one approved by both Mastercard and Visa, reader is £59.00 and 2.75{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} PT. Links to android or IOS and online portal to process CNP Payments. Works perfectly on both android and IOS as I have run it on both. No monthly fees and its an ideal way to get into taking card payments maybe to a level where you are processing lots of transactions that a monthly fee terminal with one of the larger companies would thenw work out cheaper

    Re: Advice required

Had a issue with a foreign lady a while back, old Hotpoint 18 years old simple reported fault of door catch broken, Called round to look at the appliance and sure enough it needed a new door catch, simples ! However I also noticed the drum bearings were starting to grind, I brought this to her attention that in the near future the bearings and possibly the drum shaft will need replacing and gave her an idea of the costs of that. She instructed me to not bother with that but just to repair the door catch, Now while I was mid flow with that she then and only then mentions also that the machine was filling overnight and a quick check showed one side of the dual solenoid letting by. Again I quoted her for that and she said ok fix that as well. I mentioned again that the real total repair cost at the end of the day of this old appliance would be for the door catch, dual solenoid and of course the bearing change at some stage.

She asked me to just fix the door and valves and that is what I did, three days later she’s back on the phone saying that after I repaired the machine it now does not take any hot water in ? Huh ! ok I say I will call in and as I was at the time working right round the corner I was there within 15 mins, No thanks for calling back quickly and by way of further conversation I asked her which cycle she is setting it on to which she replies the 40c wash ? I explain that on that cycle the appliance is not supposed to fill with hot water as its a cold fill only, Na she says its always worked like that ! I politely explain that it could never have worked like that and ended up showing her the Cam Chart from the service manual which I had on my tablet which proved this was indeed the case !

Leaving her with her doubts I made my exit, three weeks later she’s on the phone AGAIN, the machine is making a noise and the drum will not move ! Oh dear I said seems like your bearings may have decided to fail, well how do you know that she said without even looking at it. I explained that this is exactly what I said at my first visit but to be fair I would call round again the next day and double check.

Sure enough the drum shaft had seized and I quoted her for the work needed and she said she would think about it. I though that may have been the end of the matter but no she called up again saying she wanted a refund for all the other work I had done. I told her that I would not be providing a refund as I had at the initial visit made her aware of all of this and this was the chance that she accepted and that I had done all I could with the various issues what with the valve leaking which she never said a word about, and the issue of the hot water.

She has never called back and to be honest I am glad but sometimes no matter what you do its never enough !
